after this conversation Mori didn’t talk the entire car ride back to the port mafia. Once they got back to the port mafia, mori went to bed and cried himself to sleep.

Oh, shit. I just realized something. In Storm bringer, Dazai says this: "I want to see Port Mafia burn." He knows he can't do anything to destroy the Mafia, because they're a useful ally, so... he can have this at least. Burn something that affiliated him with them. The coat.

@Sniper Sure, why not? Honestly, to me everything Dazai says feels like a reference to something, like it's a puzzle I have to figure out a solution to fast or I will just die. It doesn't mean a theory like this is always right. However, with Dazai... we can't be sure of anything. He's an incredibly intelligent person, constantly having an unending internal debate with himself, if voicing any of it to Odasaku, for example, he usually speaks like he's referencing something they talked about before. He thinks like this too. Close to the end of the Dark Era ln we get a repeat of -“There is nothing worth pursuing at the cost of prolonging a life of suffering.” -“Awaken me from this oxidizing world of a dream.” His overall affiliation with the Mafia is mostly represented by that coat, since it was given to him by Mori around the time he ended up in his care, so it sure can be a coincidence that he burned it, but I feel like the use of "burn" here is curious, to say the least. He could've said he disposed of it, lost it, but he turned it to ash. “I want to see the Port Mafia burn.” “Didn’t the Port Mafia take you in and care for you?” “They did.” “Then why do you want to see it burn?” “I’m bored of it already.” He hates it so much because what Mori "promised" to Dazai by comparing him to himself (as if alluding Dazai will find his purpose in the Mafia just like Mori did) was a lie. Was it an intentional lie or not, I don't fucking know. Regardless, Verlaine does explain to us what Dazai means: “You went on a journey with the expectation that you might find something to change you, but all you found was a kingdom of garbage and despair. I’ve been through something similar. Simply breathing, eating, and relieving yourself isn’t living. That’s why we make the journey." Which heavily coincides with: “I joined the Mafia because of an expectation I had. I thought if I was close to death and violence-close to people giving in to their urges and desires, then I would be able to see the inner nature of humankind up close. I thought if I did that…” Dazai paused before continuing, “…I would be able to find something-a reason to live.” This specific explanation of Dazai's dissatisfaction with his time in the Mafia is definitely not a coincidence. I'm inclined to think "burning" his connection to it isn't either.

if he was afraid of him he wouldn't ask him if he wanted to come back to the mafia EDIT: I take that back. Being scared of him IS why he's offering him to come back. Dazai's dark side is what makes him a capable member of the mafia.

It's such an interesting relationship, really. Mori found Dazai as a suicide patient _by chance_ and used this so-called unassuming patient as a witness to the old boss' death. Planned to get rid of him later only to accidentally find out not only is this child wiser beyond his years, but also has the cunningness of a devil much like himself. To Mori, Dazai is a double-edged sword. He wants to wield him but he wants to keep him at bay. And Dazai's aware of this. He KNOWS he's being manipulated by Mori but he couldn't care enough to retaliate. Only when Mori crossed the line by sending Odasaku to death's door did Dazai decide he's had enough and quit. That day, he lost his greatest asset and a figurative knife to his throat.

@@dearmalaysia Mori's plan was masterful really. Mori knew that mimic couldn't be defeated by brute force(we then realized he was the one who smuggled them into japan)and he also knew that special ability department couldn't touch them either. During that time one can assume that mori's fear over dazai was beginning to take it's toll on and he needed a means to get the special ability department off his back as well. Mori then offered them a solution. He would eliminate mimic and it's leader in exchange for negotiating a special ability permit which then classifies the port mafia as a legal company. In nearly one fell swoop he eliminates mimic, he no longer has to deal with the department on his back and he also eliminates the only threat to his rule by forcing dazai to defect with the death of his friend odasaku.

I think the real reason is that Mori saw that Dazai changed from his devilish side and that he doesn't have ambitions in that way. Also of course, he saw that since Dazai left the Port Mafia isn't as feared and doesn't bring that much money like in the old days, not to mention that they can't beat enemy organisations so easily. Since he also showed the members of the PM, that he manages to "control" him or to fear Dazai away, he has a stronger position like back in the days. And last but not least: He manages to anger Fukuzawa with this.

i think people often forget that mori is very much afraid of dazai. he led dazai away because he saw that he was about to be in danger. he probably barely touched dazai because he was afraid of him, even back then. he knew that if he went too far with the demon prodigy, the same would make sure he agonized to death. and now, he wants dazai back because he still is afraid of him. afraid of him if he stays as an opponent, instead of an ally. mori knows that despite being the boss of the mafia, dazai is far superior to him. if he wished, he would (and will) be the end of him.

Me at my boss after quitting. In all seriousness my personal take of this scene is that those eyes represent pstd from witnessing Mori's murder. Why? Because i share those eyes after witnessing something similar at a young age and would do and say the same as a defensive coping. Keep in mind he did witness such at 15. Maybe deep down he's afraid, afraid of the outcome of one day killing Mori and taking over the port mafia. It's okay if you don't agree but personally how i respond to trauma is similar to how Dazai is in this scene and i think it's fun to think about!

@@Nightflight1512 Wow i never expected to read such an interesting response. Alot of what you mentioned is accurate both for me and general psychology. I'm not sure what i imagined when i first wrote this, it was just my way of relating to my comfort character. As we know, the original Dazai never witnessed Mori murder anyone, so who knows what the original Dazai would say. But i guess i'll have to ask the mangaka artist on their thoughts on writing this. P.s, As suggested i looked up R.A Disorder, and although i've never experienced such it sounds hard especially with the current world. I'm sorry if this is what you have to deal with on a daily basis but i appreciate the share. I do hope life gets easier for you in no time.It makes me happy though that you can in some way relate to Bungo Stray Dog's characters.

dazai was actually 14 when he witnessed the murder, it was a year prior to when he met chuuya at 15. and considering he was part of the mafia at the time who knows what else he witnessed. and i agree with you, dazai definitely has trauma from that and who knows what else. i also want to say his eyes during the murder really stuck out to me, i cant really explain it since i'm tired af rn but yeah

In all honesty, Dazai is one / the most scariest person. Mori took on a young suiciude patient. Trained hin to a point, that he realized the whole time; Dazai was so much smarter than him. Dazai KNEW he was being manpualtied, he just didnt care. The straw was ODA. The day Mori lrt Oda die, was the day he lost the demon prodigy. His one true prize. Mori has ALWAYS wanted to keep Dazai at bay, on a chain. Because Dazai is so much smarter, and cunning. Mori knew, Dazai could kill him at any minute. The only thing kreping him from not doing it, was Dazai himself. The thing is, Dazai is one of the most loyal to the mafia. Or, he used to be. That was because he chose too. Dazai brang some of the most powerful people to the mafia, Including Gin + Atugawaka. (? Dk how to spell it.) Mori is terrifed of Dazai. Its the reason Mori wants Dazai to rejoin the mafia, because it would put a chain on him. Letting Mori gave temp safety. It wint guarntee his safety, but it gives him more of a chance. Mori never realized he was playing into Dazais hand, letting Dazau b the leader. 😂

My interpretation of this scene is a little different than most people here. I don't think Mori was afraid of Dazai because Dazai was/is evil. Dazai doesn't really have any desire to be the PM boss, in fact he didn't even want to join the mafia initially. He only joined after he met Chūya and Chūya "convinced him to live" or something. Now, the problem here is that being in the mafia affects both Dazai and Mori very badly. Neither of them addresses their issues and their smart ass brains only benefit the organisation while working against them. They both deteriorate and so does their relationship as mentor and student. In my opinion, the reason why Mori was afraid of Dazai was because, let's face it, Dazai was a bit of a loose cannon (still is to a degree). Before the the events of Dark Era, he has no real goals and motivations except either dying or finding something that would make his life worth living. A lot of the things he does, he does more or less on a whim and because he's extremely capable that means that he could worst case scenario cause a mass tragedy on a whim. Mori wasn't afraid of Dazai killing him because Dazai was evil and wanted his position, Mori was afraid of Dazai killing him just to see if running the PM would make his life worth living. Throughout their time as a mentor and student, Mori is constantly trying to steer Dazai into what he personally thinks is the right direction, because he sees himself in Dazai. This culminates in Dark Era where Mori tries to teach Dazai that his responsibilities towards the organisation should trump his personal desires, but because of Oda's influence, this backfires. Oda, who is Dazai's first friend and the first person to truly understand Dazai (and that's why he tells Dazai that nothing will ever fill the hole in his heart, because he understands that Dazai has a deep rooted belief that no matter what he does he'll never find anything worth living for and he knows that Dazai will not listen to him if he tells him otherwise), and also isn't negatively influenced by the mafia, finally succeeds where Mori failed continuously: he gives Dazai a direction and a good enough reason to follow it. "Evil expects evil from others" here can be interpreteded as Dazai saying that Mori couldn't help Dazai overcome his darkness while Mori was and still is actively avoiding confronting his own.
