Clearly some people here don't have functioning sarcasm detectors, so I'm going to write a serious reply to those here who think they know more about karate than Higaonna Sensei: seriously, you don't. These applications he's demonstrating here are very basic, of course. The one-step sparring is very formalized, of course. A real fight doesn't look like that, of course. None of this matters. These exercises illustrate important principles that every student has to grasp before they get onto the advanced stuff, and in this video Higaonna Sensei is breaking those principles down to make them clearly comprehensible for basic practice. Of course there's more to it than that - I'm a Kyokushin second dan, and one of the things I'm doing in my training right now is incorporating 'bunkai jutsu' type analysis of kata that I've been learning from instructors like Iain Abernethy, among others. And one of the katas I'm analysing right now is Gekisai Dai. My understanding of that kata as it stands is not what we have here in this video - but this was my starting point, before adding the more advanced principles I've learned from Iain. Here's the thing - if you're sitting there in front of your PC thinking that, because this doesn't look like a real fight, it has no value, then you are mistaken. If you are questioning Higaonna Sensei's ability, then you are mistaken. He was the reason I chose karate over any other martial art and is one of the best traditional karateka out there. One of the toughest, most knowledgeable fighters I've ever worked with was a student of his (ex-special forces, plenty of street-fighting experience from working as a doorman, he was also the man who first introduced me to bunkai jutsu). But, hell, don't take my word for it. Take Donn Drager's - he's the one who called Higaonna Sensei "the most dangerous man in Japan in a real fight". Don't know who Donn Drager is? You should. Google him. You could also take my former instructor's word for it - Hanshi Steve Arneil (while you're at it, Google him too), who always spoke extremely respectfully of Higaonna Sensei. Or you can take the word of Chuck Merriman, who says Higaonna Sensei is one of the best teachers in the world. The point is, if you think you know more about karate than any of these people - you don't. Get some humility, show some respect, open your minds and learn something from those who have treasures to share with you. Osu.

your students must be very proud. you explained it like a master, for me okinawan or kyokushin is a real martial art, mean that is for dead or live encounter and way of life. i, m doing kick boxing but real karate is far from a sport. when a mma or kick boxer, thai etc tries to KO you, karate guy can kill you. I did and tried lots of martial arts and i, m sure that okinawan and kyokushin is real martial arts. all my respects to you. I wish a karate master like you, but I dont have school here. Thanks and Sorry for my english. osu!

Many karateka train but never grasp the internal aspect because schools may not address the psychological complex. It's so easy to do a technique but in tell you practice 10000 times you will never do it right. Also calm is important in a storm. Fights often happen in a furry of punches and everything seem to come in faster than the eye can register so without constant due practice and calm mind it means nothing. I like to think of the traditional karate block like a brush on a canvass. When a painter paints his are her picture if they want it to look good they have to know how much paint to put on the brush and how hard are light to brush. Fighting can be much the same and should only be used for the discipline who can grasp it learn and advance spiritually but not physically. Also schools in the us in my opnion have no where near the demand for internal actualization and external application as those in the orient. They are big at respect especially towards elders sadly many westerns fall to the way side Osu

Higaonna school is fantastique but morio higaonna IS a exception ! My instructor was sensei Daniel PONDE,and i'm Black belt goju ryu morio higaonna school. There re a very Big différence between what you Can get wirh your work,and the level of morio higaonna ! He is unique. After get my black belt,i used to practise judo wrestling bjj,for 12 years,and i realise the shape of body is not same. I regret to stop goju ryu for falling in the mode of MMA. But it was in the same Time a good expérience....and a waste of goju ryu shape of body ! Vive sensei morio higaonna !

at least they are showing the real essence of a certain kata. In western boxing, kata, is shadow boxing. reacting to an imaginative action. Kata helps in developing a continuous flow of movement.

Why is it when you see Chinese White Crane techniques (from which Goju-ryu is derived) the movements appear softer and with more content than the , "harder" Okinawan styles.

Okinawans are very stiff in their kata movement. the are thought to be like Oak whereas Kung Fu goes for more fluidity, taught to be like Water. It is all in the militarization form. I hope this helps.

Criticizing this bunkai demonstration is like saying that a Ferrari is a peace of junk. You really need to know Shihan Higaonna and Sensei Shingu to understand what you are saying. The moves and tecniques may look simple but the power and the effectivity are amazing. Don't judge without having the proper knowledge. I have trained with both of them and believe me you if you would have been there you would understand.

How can you say this is awful, this is Morio Higaonna 10th dan in Goju ryu karate and you think this is a shitty performance, sorry but before you write this down, get your info right.
@crisgmail10 жыл бұрын
Just because someone is better than you doesnt mean they are good. Perhaps this video is old and perhaps this is not his best example. There are teachers out there with a coherent thesis on Goju that actually has to do with the kata concepts and not with japanized karate.
@thesilful10 жыл бұрын
Cristobal Gidi But that is what I mean, this is Okinawa Goju Ryu and not Japanese Goju Ryu, and honestly can you point out what for flaws he is making and why this is a bad exucution of bunkai?, this is precisly what I have learned all this years, that is why I am asking myself, what is wrong about it, that is all. And Higaonna sensei, is the real deal, and with his age, still so flexibel and is love for karate, at least he has my respect, osu sensei Higaonna.

dude.... the grandmaster of the best goju ryu master u know would have been a student of shihan higaonna.... many masters have said that his skill, his power and his focus are something to be revered.. the man is a living legend... he has the title of "japans toughest man".. and his age? 85.. before u talk smack, show some respect for this legend.
@crisgmail10 жыл бұрын
The flaws here are evident if you have ever had a real fight. I don't think that a martial system anywhere in the world would promote such robotic movement. Have you asked yourself why his bunks look nothing like his kata? joelvis65 if you knew how Higaonna has treated his teacher, you might recant you "respect".
