"lazy learners" for ex-Mormons is hilarious. Ex-Mormons will drop detailed historical lectures faster than a professional reenactor
@stephtimms17763 жыл бұрын
The point is they are spiritually lazy. It takes spiritual effort to understand God. "The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he is not able to know [them], because they are discerned spiritually" ~ 1 Corinthians 2:14. This church teaches the wise use of the intellect to get to heaven, that God answers our prayers through our spirit, mind, and heart after we study any matter fully ourselves and practice making good judgements first before getting confirmation from God. See Doctrine and Covenants 6, 8, 9, and 11.
@spencergellsworth3 жыл бұрын
@@stephtimms1776 I guess I'm too much of a "natural man" to understand God's mysterious purpose in having Joseph Smith secretly marry teenagers behind Emma's back, not even following his own rules for polygamy.
@stephtimms17763 жыл бұрын
@@spencergellsworth I guess so. I only know of one such marriage of Joseph's, which was not consummated because it was for the next life. The natural man is easy to deceive, to influence to misunderstand and assign evil intent. Some fake disciples did it to Jesus when he spoke of the sacrament (John 6). The natural man looks for excuses to fail, but the better angels of our nature look for ways to succeed through spiritual hard work.

@@stephtimms1776 Maybe you're the lazy learner, he had somewhere around 10 sealings to teenage girls. Helen Mar Kimball, Nancy M. Winchester, Flora Ann Woodworth, Sarah Ann Whitney, Sarah Lawrence, Lucy Walker, Fanny Alger, Emily Dow Partridge, Maria Lawrence, and Malissa Lott. Theres no reason to think he didn't consummate with them especially seeing as in the 1892 trial 3 of his child brides confirmed consumption as to "not hurt the church". Most of them were given as property by their fathers so their families could be closer to prosperity and was not the choice of those children.
@stephtimms17762 жыл бұрын
@@evebruun No, I just don't believe gossip that is commonly thrown out. 1. Helen Mar Kimball age 14 agreed to the sealing and later characterized it as being “for eternity alone,” suggesting that the relationship did *NOT* involve sex. 2. Nancy M. Winchester age ? only two late sources indicate that at some point she *might* have been sealed to Joseph. 3. Flora Ann Woodworth was 16, poorly documented. 4. Sarah Ann Whitney age 17 5. Sarah Lawrence age 16 6. Lucy Walker age 17 7. Fanny Alger age 19 8. Emily Dow Partridge age 19 9. Maria Lawrence age 19 10. Malissa Lott age 19 Some dates and details of Joseph’s plural marriages are debated because it was kept secret because it was not well accepted. However, back then it was an accepted practice to court and marry early generally. Even in the 1960’s they did; Loretta Lynn was 13 years old when married and Priscilla Presley’s was 14 years old when she dated Elvis. (Also, though not a real couple as far as we know, the story of Romeo and Juliet reflects customs and accepted practices, her being only 13 when she married Romeo).

Faith is the very thing that keeps so many people lazy. THAT’S being a “lazy learner”. When I finally started looking into everything, I became the opposite of lazy.

Faith, in LDS theology is “an enabling power.” What does it enable us to do? Not merely wait around for an answer. Absent work it is not faith. At the same time, absent truly seeking God’s influence and help in the process is not faith, either.

He taught faith means we persevere even through lifelong challenges and even during plagues. Mountains of misery are turned for good through faith. 1. Study about Jesus and love him, follow him. Learn about Miracles and how they are preceded by FAITH. 2. Pray and practice hearing the HG, which includes following his counsel. Take doubt and questions to the Lord to received counsel from Him. Revelation takes work. 3. Fast - this takes work to master self. 4. Serve - Act in faith. What would you do if you had more faith? Turn adversity for good like Jesus did. 5. Prepare and partake in Holy Ordinances.

A thought on happiness: When I was in the church I remember not only being unhappy, because of multiple untreated mental illnesses, but also a large part of my guilt in the church was that the church teaches that you *are* happy, not that you *can be* happy. When I wasn’t feeling well emotionally for any reason, I felt that I couldn’t be honest about that, to myself or to others. Some of that mindset of feeling like you have to prove to the world how happy you are persists in the exmormon community also, which I’m sure in a lot of ways is a learned behavior from being in the church. It’s great to be happy and its also perfectly okay to not be happy, and to explore that and process emotions and continue to grow.

Interesting, because you can typically get (and I got, on many occasions) access to free mental health care, through your bishop. I had issues with social anxiety and religious scrupulosity, and was able to work through it. There are certainly people who can feel that way, mainly because there is a strong correlation between psychological health and happiness and religion (thus, most people in most religions will actually BE more happy than the rest of the population). So, I can definitely see where you're coming from, and how that might make you feel different.

@raynemichelle29962 жыл бұрын
@@towardcivicliteracy Except you teaching that on your mission is the church teaching. It coaxes people into a false belief that they came to conclusions on their own, or with the help of the spirit. It's a form of brainwashing. Sharing so called testimonies using words like "know" instead of "believe" is disingenuous. It is actually just a belief, not knowledge. The "spirit" is just a warm fuzzy feeling caused by neurotransmitters and you get that with a lot of things. I got that when I first realized the church wasn't actually true. I got it realizing truths in other spiritual practices like Buddhism. I got them in recovery meetings that weren't discussing spirituality. I got them when a born again Christian lady next to mee on the plane prayed for my LDS dad who has cancer. A still small voice is just our subconscious and all people have it. Mormons (sorry, that's now an offensive nickname or slur because Prezzy Nelson doesn't like it), I mean LDS members, are not special.
@towardcivicliteracy2 жыл бұрын
@@raynemichelle2996 Yes. Neurotransmitters is how it's accomplished. And? Merely pointing out naturalistic explanations is not a claim of any ultimate cause. You're only expressing faith that it is the only cause, even though that is actually logically impossible. You came from somewhere before the neurotransmitters fired. Mormons aren't special. You're right. Not intrinsically. The Restored Gospel is. The priesthood is, and logically it would have to be--just as a matter of balancing divine justice and mercy. The fruits of the spirit are: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, kindness and faith. Are all those "just feelings"? Actually, no. Obviously not. And we don't claim it's "just feelings." That's a common criticism that's purely rhetorical, and utterly senseless. In fact, factually so: In terms of population-level statistics, LDS people are unusual. That has been well-known for years by social scientists, and there are plenty of examples that are measurable reflections of gifts of the Spirit. You act as if you've got it figured out in pointing out that other people experience the Spirit. Another thing I used to teach in the first discussion.

The church has been its own worst enemy by hiding "non-faith building" historical truths for so long. I had forgot till other ex mo chats reminded me. I didn't watch but I watch ex mo chats and some of the stuff said we're pretty crazy. One of the woman made a talk about being a military sargent to your children. There was also the one talking about genocide and equating it to a child finding it unfair that they don't get the bike they want. It was just "things are unfair it's a teaching moment."

When you point out the truth to the church, especially about their racist sayings in the BOM they throw you out the church that shows how much faith they have in their own faith. What a crock this is.

I'm interested your view of faith, Tanner. I've really had an aversion to the word "spirituality" ever since I left Mormonism. It really bothers me when people try to say they hope I'm still a spiritual person, because life isn't complete without some form of spirituality. Your description of your view of faith is the only thing I've heard so far that didn't make me want to crawl out of my skin. It has merit.

Love you two! ❤️❤️ You’re definitely not lazy learners. To call those who have studied and seen the light and had the courage to leave the cult “lazy learners” is the lowest form of name-calling. Those who blindly follow untruths and listen faithfully to such rot are not only lazy but actively avoiding and disregarding truth. Unconscionable. A literal example of “believing” (and by that I mean going along with) in how lovely the Emperor’s new clothes are! 😂😂😂

If I entered a crowded room and yelled, "Hey Stupid! The door is over here! Idiots won't ever find it." Would you assume I had just called you a stupid idiot because you happen to be in the room? Why would you assume I was talking to you if you know where the door is and you know you're not stupid? What he said was lazy learners will struggle with faith and doubts. It may have been a poor choice of words, but that doesn't mean he also believes all those who struggle with faith and doubts are lazy learners. Interpreting the statement that way is illogical and disingenuous.

Then shame and guilt of feeling lazy compared to President Nelson was very effective in getting me to over commit. My mantra was everything is possible! RM Nelson did it with 10 kids, med school, skiing and a world leader calling. Anything less impressive was met with self shame and ridicule. I still struggle with feeling not good enough and still feel that if I were just a harder worker I would have made it at church. My brain still tries to reason in this way because the life I do have that I worked hard for really did make me happy. It’s hard to reason with this mentality. Who knows if he is attempting to be this impressive for god or for others. For me I felt a lot of pressure to be impressive for the church members sake and didn’t give myself enough boundaries to do things for the right reasons. I came from an abusive childhood and I think this is the addictive behavior that resulted. The desire to people please. I felt a lot of members were struggling with the addiction to people please which is codependency which is a trauma response.

Funny you mention it. My mom died a few years ago (when I was 20) and that was when I stopped trying to believe in the mormons. Because I was taught god would heal anything but it never healed my disability and then it never healed my mom. So I stopped pushing so hard to try to believe

I thought I was atheist for a while but I always had a lingering of faith. Now I live honestly about my feelings. I believe we should all do what’s best for us in our spiritual journeys. I hope one day that these extremists understand this message. Their toxic organized religion set up hurts society so badly.

They get their hooks in you pretty deep as far as indoctrination goes, for one. For another, they are good at fellowshipping and establishing a strong sense of community if they find you "worthy." We were part of a cult that "lovingly and righteously" controlled what we did, thought, and felt. Don't feel bad for missing it, because I'm sure you had some good times- or at least thought they were good at the time- but don't lose sight of what you know to be true. Good luck!

Nelson for sure has a complex about not seeing Jesus. My brother told me how on his mission Nelson EXPLODED with anger at a missionary that innocently asked if he'd seen the Savior. I've heard similar stories since then as well.

As a Hispanic nevermo I’m amazed about the fact I’d probably be forced to work on Christmas so maybe that’s another reason to be glad I’ve never been part of this church (alongside the claims about the Book of Mormon and the apparent creationism in the theology, that last part is why I left my own church in the first place).
@mayritaysabel3 жыл бұрын
Omg you guys something crazy just happened!! I was watching this video when all of a sudden the missionaries in my area called me! I didn't know it was them because I just moved in to a new area. Plus I have been inactive for 4 years. So they asked how long I have been a member and I told them I was born into the church but recently went inactive. I was very tempted to say " I've done my research & found the truth" but deep down I knew this response will put me in a situation where they will try to convince me and meet up . So I simply said, "the longer I stayed in the church the worse my anxiety got. I needed to figure my self out. Now that I'm No longer a member I can finally breathe." their response to that was "well we are here if you need anything." What a weird coincidence... It's almost as if they were watching me. Anyways I just wanted to share my super weird experience with y'all 😂

I am still a member of the church however been in active for many many many many years. The only reason I have not left is because I heard it was difficult and honestly I don’t want to deal with that. After doing research I did come to the conclusion it is a cult. My spiritual believe is personal to me and don’t believe I need to go to an organized religion with old men telling me what is right or wrong. All that secret stuff that goes on is just creepy to me!
