5:25 This is a little confusing. How do you compare a homosexual with a heterosexual within the church? "Regardless of who you are you shouldn't sin" but a heterosexual within the church can deal with their temptations by getting married whereas a homosexual cannot.
@davidfrey5654

Not true. There are a LOT of men (and some women) in the church who still struggle keeping the Law of Chastity after marriage. Men are genetically given that strong desire at birth. It's a constant temptation. Only after years and years of righteous living can some men completely overcome that temptation. As members of the God's church we are commanded not to masturbate, watch porn or allow unrighteous thoughts to linger in our minds. That's a challenge. Who is to say that the struggle of a gay man to keep God's commandments are any harder than the struggle of a man who has a high sexual desire not to masturbate? We each have our cross to bear. And only God can judge whose struggle is more significant.

Please do not divorce your wife. I was raised in the church, was in the closet for 40 years. I was suicidal until I came out at 44 and stopped living the lie that I was straight. I married a woman whose face had been in my night time dreams since I was a toddler. I went to renew my temple recommend after we were married. The bishop wanted to, but had to ask Salt Lake City headquarters first. They wrote him back and said to basically throw me in the trash (excommunicate me). They didn’t care that God had me dream of her face for 44 years. They didn’t care that when I was deathly ill she carried me to the toilet for 2 years and fed me. They wanted me to throw her loyalty and love in the trash, or they were going to throw me in the trash. Guess which one I chose? I chose to listen to God, who had me dream of her face for over 4 decades. And when I met her found a love like I’d never felt with my temple marriage (we had already divorce, he left me for my best friend, he wanted more kids, I was unable to have more kids).

I disagree with his take on transgenderism. While it’s true some people have gender dysphoria that does not mean you should pander to a false reality. There IS an objective truth as to what gender that person is and the Lord has made it very clear where he stands on gender (pre-mortally and mortally). Just read the Family Proclamation. Love would be helping that person come to terms with reality and Christ’s teachings, not justifying and condoning a false truth that will ultimately lead them further from Christ. I know that may sound harsh, but if we disregard truth then we continue down a slippery slope that never ends. Where do you draw the line? When people start identifying as animals or inanimate objects will you pander to those false beliefs as well? Love is warning someone they are about to put their hand on a hot stove, not standing by and watching them do it…or even worse, encouraging it.

The Lord has CLEARLY stated where he stands on the importance of marriage and eternal nature of gender. LGBTQ is a distortion of the Lord's declarations. That does NOT mean that those who are members of the community don't deserve love, but it also doesn't mean we need to support their choices, especially being members of the Lord's gospel. Anyone who doesn't agree simply doesn't agree with the Lord and the scriptures. They have the right to do so, but facts are facts no matter how anyone feels.

Straight people can feel the magic of a first kiss and be united together forever in the temple to who they love but people like me can’t? No, two men and two women can’t make babies. Lets turn it around here of what it is like: It would be like telling a straight guy: "It is ok that you like women. But you can never have a romantic relationship with one ever. You can however have a romantic relationship with a another man. And that relationship is glorious in the eyes of God. But if you don't want to do that then just remain single your whole life and if you are true and faithful in this life you will have an option to marry a man in the next life."

The church will never change the law of chastity. It's etched in scriptures. God himself would be a liar. I know gay people personally quite happy following the guidelines of the church. No its not easy but so much God asks us to do isn't easy. Those who have left the guy lifestyle talk about how much closer to the spirit they are and how they have a testimony of the law of chastity. God doesn't change to fit us we change or sacrifice to follow him. It's up to each of us but it's also between us and God what we decide. But you can't force the blessings on you that come by following the law of chastity by trying to change that law to what is easier to follow. We are asked to give up a lot to follow Christ. Please do not think that will ever change. But we can respect people where they are at in their journey. I don't judge people personally as how they stand before God. But I will judge actions that take us further from God. No amount of my respect and love will erase the consequences of our actions. The church doesn't lie to appease the masses but they are getting softer so people are more accepted and open the door for repentance. God will save us from our sins not in them. I know it is not a sin to feel a certain way. Buy actions we take can be sins when they are not in line with God's commands. And until we repent we will be subject to the consequences of sinful actions. God's atonement made repentance possible. Be careful not to play God to be acceptable to the masses. It's a dangerous road.

I would rather have a few people who understand what they are getting into than people joining the church and leaving because their expectations have not been met. I try to love everyone regardless of what they do, but that doesn't mean that I endorse what is done. This is a core doctrine issue and I hear what you are saying... I believe in finding a church/place/religion that suits your core beliefs and I think LDS core beliefs do not support LGBTQ. I agree there are many factors that play into this. You mentioned Societal influences. I think that is a HUGE one. We see so many young people these days identify as LGBTQ because is the “cool and trendy” thing amongst their peer groups. And neither do they want to be seen as bigots for not condoning this lifestyle. Yet, I do believe that a VERY small percentage of people are born with those feelings. But I see it as a cross God gave them to bare and overcome. Just as we ALL have our own crosses to bare, regardless of what they happen to be. Ether 12:27 “And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.”

Homosexual sexual orientation is not a gift, at best; it is a biological but benign defect occurring in nature. That's why St. Paul said it was "paraphysios" contrary to nature. It is akin to someone being born with diabetes or any other congenital disorder. We should be compassionate to those suffering with it- trying to fit in society, but at the same time investigating its causes and seeking medical remedies. Luke and Rachel Barendse I believe this section of scripture is talking about those who reject God and are fall into sin, with no knowledge of being lifted out of it. Yet we know by science that sexual attraction isn’t usually a choice, and children begin to show signs of their attraction at the age of 7, 8, or 9. Heck I had crushes on girls in first grade. Of course not fully developed, but I don’t believe Paul is calling children lusters, neither is he calling devout members of Christ Church lusters, regardless of their attraction. Discipleship isn’t contingent on sexual orientation.

Thanks Kwaku, but if the result of rejecting God and falling into sin is being 'given over' to homosexuality and it's described as 'unnatural, unclean, dishonerable, vile affections and much more, how is it any different for someone who still holds a belief in God and yet practices the same thing? I'm not understanding how there is a distinction between a non-LDS person doing this, and an LDS person practicing the same thing. I do agree with you that this passage is referring to people who reject God and are in sin, because clearly homosexuality, according to God is a sin and it's not natural. (Romans 1: 26&27) Thanks for not blasting me too but having a conversation about this.

No rant here, just had another couple of ideas: Leviticus 18:22, "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." Leviticus 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them." 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God." These are other verses supporting this position. And just as a logical argument, I would assume that you wouldn't use science that contradicts God's word, like uncreated, natural means by which we exist today. Many modern day 'scientists' teach this through the evolution theory. Why use science for this issue at all? But if we are going to use science to back up a refutation of what is clearly taught in scripture, then what if someone is born a liar. Is it ok for them to naturally just be themselves and lie all the time? or a steal, or murder for that matter. If God created sinners to sin, then why is it wrong for them to practice this? What would be the point for the plan of salvation? I don't think the 'it's natural science backs it up' argument works when speaking about God's decree of morality. Just some more food for thought friend.

Obviously we should love everybody, that's a given. However, I feel that it's wrong to say someone's temptation/desire to have sexual relationships with someone of the same biological sex is a gift from God; to assume that if I have an innate desire that it must be from God, is just not true. I know plenty of people (myself included) who have temptations that are not things to be celebrated or paraded in 'pride'- for example, a person who has the tendency to gossip, or a married man who has the tendency/desire to flirt with other women, or a person who has the tendency/desire to be a jerk to the elderly, or a person who has the desire to have sexual relations with children, or a person who has the desire to set fire to things, a person who has the constant desire to punch people in the face, the list goes on. There are many scriptural examples too of people who had strong desires to do something, but these desires were wrong. In fact, that's a lot of what life is about- overcoming temptations, not celebrating them. That doesn't mean we beat ourselves up or make fun of others because they have different temptations to us, however it also doesn't mean we should act like temptations are a gift from God. For example, JST of 1 Samuel 16:14-16 makes it very clear that Saul's temptation to do something against the commandments, or "an evil spirit", was "NOT of the Lord". There are many other instances in the scriptures that clarify how temptations come from Satan and not from God. God ALLOWS us to be tempted, but they're not from Him. I also think this is why it's important that we avoid labelling ourselves by such temptations. Because then we start thinking "this desire is WHO I AM, it's innate, it's a part of me etc.", like, when I was a teenager I used to have anger issues/easily annoyed issues, they were a strong desire! However, if I had labelled myself "an angry woman- this is who I am!", I think that would have only made the problem worse, not better. We should label ourselves as children of God, that way we can stop obsessing over how our temptations or desires are different than others, and we can see each other for who and what we truly are.

@@ZehnWaters I agree that weaknesses can help us depend on God, however temptations are not the same thing as weaknesses. A weakness may be how easily you succumb to a temptation, for example. However, temptations don't come from God. I think James 1:12-16 is a great passage for this topic. Verse 13 says 'let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man'. The passage also talks about how those who don't succumb to temptation but have endured it, are blessed with 'the crown of life'.

Sonya Grgich My ability to fall in love and my need to be loved and to have that love be recognized, respected, and protected is not a “weakness” nor a “tendency”-it’s one of the most important and beautiful aspects of human, or even godly, nature. To debase something so wonderful and amazing by comparing it to things like kleptomania and pyromania is ignorant, disrespectful, and dehumanizing. The love I have for my partner of 5 years is no less beautiful and amazing than the relationship my brother has with his wife. My love for my partner is not a “trial”, “temptation” nor my “cross to bear”. He completes me, makes me better, gives me strength when I am weak, we share our lives together and are happier for it. It’s not just a habit I can’t break. Love is love is love is love.

@@morganscharman5027 the examples I gave of how people have different tendencies for things that are against Heavenly Father's teachings are not all equally as grevious as each other- they are examples of how we all have different things to overcome. Some people have the view that nothing is wrong with being a pyromaniac, some may even think it's beautiful. That doesn't change the truth about whether it's right or wrong though. My belief that having a sexual relationship with someone of the same gender is against God's plan for His children is not disrespectful. Having different viewpoints is a result of the diverse world we live in. Something you think is a 'beautiful aspect' is not always going to be seen the same way by others. Love can exist without having a sexual relationship to make it meaningful. I believe that sex should be reserved for a marriage relationship between a man and a woman as set out in God's plan. To assume that the only way to show your love for someone else in a meaningful relationship is by having a sexual relationship with them is lust in my opinion.

I personally don't really worry to much about the "how" of miracles. How did Jesus turn water into wine? It's certainly possible from a physics stand point e = mc^2 so then energy of water can be transformed into wine. But one theory verses another I don't think is the point of the scriptures. However to answer your question. Latter-day Saints don't technically believe that god created our spirits out of nothing. We believe God organized our spirits from eternally existing intelegences. It's in the book of Abraham (chapter 3) if you want to read about it for yourself. But it's a lot like how Jesus turned water into wine. He didn't create the the wine he but he organized the prexisiting energy. Where did the energy come from? The big bang 14 billion years ago at least. Maybe it's always existed, maybe it's eternal. I don't know. However technically we are eternal just like God is eternal, no beginning no end. That theology isn't the foundation of my faith though so if a prophet in the future provides a more inspired explanation I would shift my beliefs, but that's how I understand it today.

As a Latter Day Saint, I've always had an interest in how to approach the LGBTQ community with respect and friendship while still aligning myself with the beliefs and doctrine of the church. This video helped me to see things more clearly. I have recently started attending BYU and I've already seen a lot of ignorant attitudes shown towards the LGBTQ community. I don't say ignorant to mean bigoted or stupid, but in that many students here just do not have the correct knowledge or understanding of how the church interacts with those who align LGBTQ (one of my classmates believed that outed gay people were not allowed to attend BYU). It is still difficult for me to express how I feel about LGBTQ issues in this environment because many (not all) people here seem to have closed a door on these issues and don't bother with them because "that's not what our church believes in." I would love to get involved some way here and try to help change this mindset many of us have and open our thoughts and hearts towards those who don't fit in the "tidy box." So, it's ok to have a homosexual orientation but not to act on it? Is that the idea in a nutshell? One problem, of course, is that sex is healthy and continually suppressing that desire is unhealthy (assuming that the person is not asexual). So in order to prohibit it, you need to prove to me that a homosexual act is detrimental to the person's physical health and/or psychology. *crickets... Since you can't do this, you might argue the weaker argument that it is bad for society. But this is not supported by the evidence either. Ok, so all you have now is 'God said so'. But this now requires that you prove that he exists (in an empirical sense) and you prove that it makes sense to listen to his/her/its dictates. Good luck with that. Look at the world with a non-mormon secular humanist lens and all of a sudden there is a clear logic for treating people well. I'd suggest checking out TheCosmicSkeptic for more on this worldview.

And then there is the problem of identity. If you say it is ok to identify as gay, but then prohibit something that is essential to the gay lifestyle - you are prohibiting their self-expression. And for what? ...for nothing (see above). Lastly, this idea that everyone (even us straightees!) needs to inhibit some temptations and that avoiding sexual acts is just a burden for a gay man/or woman, is a dodge that avoids the essence of the question: why is it unhealthy for the person and society? I can give you answers for pedophilia, rape, murder, alcoholism - you can't give me any for homosexual acts. They are not in the same category so stop pretending that they are.

Hey guys as one of the 3 Mormons hosts (not featured in this video) I just thought I'd throw in my two cents on this issue: I love the love expressed in this episode. I fully agree that Latter-day Saints (myself included) have a divine duty to love everyone. The world at large (including Latter-day Saints) needs to improve at loving those with sexual orientations differing from our own. I'm impressed with Richard's determination to understand LGTBQ issues and help change others' perspectives for the better. However, I do believe a statement or two of his in this episode may be incomplete and convey the wrong idea. For example (4:01): "I look at it [sexual orientation] like red hair, being left-handed, or different colored eyes -- these are all the beautiful things God has created for diversity and beauty and harmony ... and we shouldn't go to God and ask that to change. I can't change the color of my hair, I can't change being left-handed or right-handed. I don't think we can change sexual orientation." I think this is an oversimplification of the issue. It deals with the complicated question, "are you born gay or not." Nature vs. nurture. I don't think it has to be one answer or the other. I think there is a spectrum of reasons for why some people identify with one sexual orientation over another and it's inappropriate to put every member of the LGBTQ community in the box of having no control over their sexuality. Don't get me wrong, for many people it may be absolutely true, and there is research to support that, but I really don't think it's true in every single case across the board. That said, I certainly don't ascribe to the opposite end of the spectrum either. Changing your sexual orientation isn't like flipping a light switch by any means. But by making the universal statement that homosexuality is like having blue eyes (something you're born with and have no influence over), I think we're undercutting the divine principle of agency as well as the validity of individual stories from the LGBT community. Is it possible for people to be born with a predisposition towards homosexuality? Sure. Is it possible for people to become/choose homosexuality through other means? Of course they can. Genetics, environment, hormones, personal choice -- they all play their part and influence each person differently (hence why you can find so much conflicting research on this subject). It's not as set in stone as eye color for some people. Is it possible to change our sexuality? For some people, yes! For some people, it may not be. Again, there's a spectrum. And if people want to ask God to help them change it, then I think that's totally fine. It may or may not help. I'm not trying to be homophobic by opining that it's a choice for some people, I'm simply advocating for voices like actress Cynthia Nixon, who told New York Times Magazine: "I understand that for many people it's not (a choice), but for me it's a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me." Anyway, just thought I'd make it known that I disagree with that aspect of this episode.

Sorry to clarify. I while I agree everyone has their own experience with being gay or where they are in their lives. I think it is dangerous to say that people can choose because parents or peers of gay people will use that to attack them saying "why can't you just choose to not be gay because this person chose to be or not be gay"... people don't really choose to be or not to be,it is how they respond to being gay and that also depends on where on the spectrum of sexual attraction they fall. Which was shown that it is a spectrum even back in the 50's by the Kinsey report.
@davidsnell2605
@davidsnell2605 6 жыл бұрын
I agree that there is a spectrum. Many people may not have any say in their orientation, and I strongly believe that parents, peers, and church leaders should not pressure or shame people into any kind of reformative therapy. I agree that it's dangerous to say "everybody can change," but I think it's also dangerous to say, "nobody can change." I think it's fair to say some people can change and some people cannot, and if a person can't change that does not mean they're to blame. I think there's a difference between saying to yourself, "I chose this, this is my fault, I need to choose something else," and saying, "Maybe I'm genetically designed with this sexual orientation, maybe not, or maybe it's a mix of factors, but no matter what I'm happy with who I am, and if one day my orientation changes, so be it. If not, no worries." It's up to each individual to figure out where they fall on the spectrum. But to ignore the very real people that have publicly stated their sexuality is a choice (just a Google search away) is to ignore one end of that spectrum. Are there people who have zero control over their sexuality? Definitely. Let's be inclusive of them. Are there people who have some control over their sexuality? Definitely. Let's be inclusive of them, too. But no matter where you fall on the spectrum, you deserve all the love, respect, and acceptance in the world.

HOWEVER, if I address a "Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" coworker or customer as a "cultist," I should be fired... Because I am creating a hostile work environment. If a Mormon walks into my establishment, I can't say, "No cultists allowed" or "What do you want, cultist?" Laws are trying to establish that basic protection for Trans people. While I am not gay, lesbian, or transgender, I assume that walking this road is a very difficult one within or outside the church. The more people I meet who walk this road I have come to understand is that from the time they were little or teens they knew that they were different. Many spend years trying to fit into the box of being heterosexual but in the end, they can't because that is not their true nature. I am assuming it is just like how I knew I wanted to grow up and get married to a man. I do not believe we can put it in the same category as being an alcoholic or any of the things we consider as a sin.

True love/charity does not rejoice in [celebrate] iniquity but rejoiceth in truth. (See Moroni 7 : 45). By this definition and measure, "Papa Ostler" cannot posses charity for those he claims to love, since he eschews much truth and celebrates iniquity. If someone's operational definition of love dispenses with revealed truth and replaces it with supporting iniquity itself, according to Moroni, they do not actually posses the pure love of Christ (charity). Rather, they posses the hollow revelry of the devils who mock God's revelations and co-opt symbols of His promised covenants. They are lovers of their own flesh and hate the church. True love honors God and elevates eternal identity above all other labels. Too many people think that "loving a sinner" requires retreat from the truth; it doesn't. In fact, true love for others insists on seeking their eternal welfare, which does not rejoice in iniquity but desires to draw them closer to truth and free them from soul-limiting iniquity-even if it takes long suffering to persuade them away from sin.

@@mattctr Joseph Smith sent a widower father off on a mission. He promised to raise the man's older children as his own. Shortly thereafter, Joseph approached the young 17 year old girl and told her God commanded her to marry him. She refused and was distraught. She writes about how she wanted to die and join her dead mother, that she was only a child and wished she had her father around to guide her... Upon sensing her distress, Joseph Smith said "I have no flattering words it is a commandment from God to you, you have 24 hours to accept his commandment, or the doors will be forever closed against you" She accepted... and there is evidence that marriage was sexual... I agree fully.. unfortunately it's highly unlikely to do so, as it goes against the principal of needing male and female couples in order to have kids, and as we're talking about the LDS church it's even more important to keep it that way considering that they believe that you continue having children in heaven after we die. It would be rather hypocritical of them to do so (ironically enough it's also hypocritical to say that they love everyone as they are and that we are created in the image of God, and not allow them true happiness), although I wish they would make a change here as well. Everyone deserves to love and be loved, irregardless of whether you love someone of the same sex or not.

There is no equivalent preparation in a man's body for a man's body to interact with another man. A woman doesn't have a body part which is designed to interact with another woman's genitals. Some women prove this point by calling themselves lesbians while using an artificial man part (which proves they want a man).

I'm an active member but have friends that are LGBTQ. I loved this video! I still struggle to understand why God created people this way if marriage is essential for exaltation of the highest degree--but gay marriage would violate God's law. I just can't believe that a loving Heavenly Father who desires happiness for ALL of His children would prevent LGBTQ members from having the joy that marriage can bring, or that they would be cured from being LGBTQ in the next life. Any advice on how to deal with this dissonance?

It's something I've been thinking about for some time - it's difficult to reconcile. I'm not sure that God created people this way, or if it's a natural variation in a mortal world. There are lots of ways to rationalise, like as you said being "cured" in the resurrection - but here's my latest thought, for what it's worth - there's 3 degrees in the celestial kingdom, and you are "saved" even if you don't get to the top one, and I think it'll be pretty wonderful in the other two - you can still love people. I don't know what the answer is in terms of marriage and sex, maybe we'll see it differently, who knows - after all, formal marriage is really just a licence for procreation - then again, the terrestrial kingdom doesn't sound that bad =o) Basically, I don't know. But there's no excuse for us to treat people badly because they're "different".
@KlydetheGlyde
@KlydetheGlyde 6 ай бұрын
That’s a great thought pattern. I start with the question ‘does God allow natural variation?’ Why are some people blind, deformed, mentally ill, or unattractive? Why would a loving God allow any variation? If there is physical, mental and emotional variation, why wouldn’t there be sexual variation as well? I accept all these variations as Gods willingness to provide diversity and beauty in the world. A chance to recognize and love each other. So with natural variation accepted, the next question is ‘can I do anything I want since I was made this way?’ And that right there doesn’t make sense. It makes more sense that we take the gifts and uniqueness given us and do everything we can to accept Christ on his terms.

If you love someone you point them to the Savior because he can help all of us over come our temptations and trials. By telling someone they're fine they way they are and don't need to change, tells them they don't need repentance and they miss out on many blessings from the Savior. I agree we love our neighbors and those around us, but that doesn't mean agreeing with their choices that distance them from the Savior and our Father in Heaven. Tyler G Everyone deserves to be welcomed in Christ’s gospel. It was wrong and counterproductive to institute a limit for this, and that’s why it was changed. The leaders make mistakes sometimes because they are human, by I trust that they are trying to take care of all of our members and as many others in need as they can help. I do agree that the gay children that are already in the church are in a precarious position with regards to our culture. My parents are very disgusted by the concept of homosexuality and it is their right to feel this way, it doesn’t mean that they hate anyone, they just aren’t able to understand what it’s like to be gay. The only thing that can be done about this is to educate parents on the matter of loving their children unconditionally as Christ loves everyone. I think if more lgbt religious people came together to share their stories, it would make it easier for newer generations of us to feel a sense of support in their religions and in lgbt circles. A lot of religious people are prejudiced against us for being “too dirty” as if they aren’t also sinners lol, And a lot of Lgbt people are prejudiced against religious people for being “too judgmental” and I feel like if we had more of a place for those of us in the middle, those kids could reconcile their identities a little bit better.

Tyler G one thing I think we need to keep in mind is that the leaders are usually very clear on weather or not they say a policy is directly from God, or it is something that has been voted on within their councils and can be changed. My heart goes out to all who feel like their leaders are not living up to their responsibilities to care for everyone. It doesn’t mean that they have hate in their hearts, just that they don’t understand. God would not give outright and specific instruction if it did more harm than good. Wherever you are in life, weather you’re a member or not, I believe God loves you and that he’s proud of whatever effort you go through to be a good person.

You can’t get baptized until you have repented of this sin...according to the missionaries. In the Bible it is an abomination for men to be with men...sounds like a commandment to me as is paying tithing...you say. So if non-paying tithes can’t go into the Temple then also anyone else breaking a commandment like homosexuality shouldn’t be allowed either. So what is the point of becoming a homosexual LDS member if you can’t ever make it into the Temple or get baptized???

We do not have to embrace it. What if you identify as a demon, or a furry, or or whatever the next thing to come along. Does God embrace that? Are you going to use everyone’s pronouns? Are we now supposed let them use the bathroom of their choice in our buildings ? There is so much more to this topic than being gay or trans. We can love people without excepting a whole movement.
