I was raised Southern Baptist, but was slightly disillusioned. I started my own search for God then. I learned alot through experience and study about many other religions. I almost gave up on my search, and just settled. However, one day, there was an old 1970s BoM (w/ Moroni on the cover), and felt compelled to take it home, and read it (I didn't understand it). A couple days later the missionaries were going door to door (for the first time in my 8 years living there). I was baptized three months later on November 15 2015.

I absolutely love how you guys took time to learn about other religions and only said good . You were open hearted. As a convert from a baptist church, they weren't open to other religions and said us as members aren't either . But I really admire you guys saying good things even if it's not your religion.

Thanks guys, I really enjoyed this episode. I try to go to 2-3 other churches most weekends in addition to my LDS ward. What I miss since moving to Provo a few weeks ago is that there is no Messianic congregation nearby. Those services are wonderful because they both have the Jewish traditions of my heritage AND they have Jesus. But a great alternative for Saturday mornings in Provo is the Seventh Day Adventists. It is very similar to LDS in many ways. Many of the people there are truly saints as far as I can tell. I believe Jesus, at this time, lets thousands of churches be so He can meet everyone right where they are. I pray and sometimes encourage the people I meet in the other churches to at least consider that the Gospel may be a lot fuller and even better good news than they currently comprehend. It took me 48 years to find the true Church, so there's hope for everybody.

Myself, I have been active in a Baptist Bible study, for more than a year. They know that I am a Latter Day Saint, and yet they even asked me to lead them in prayer. Of course, just as soon as class is over, I go to Church, and worship there. Life gets better by getting along with others.

I do quote from the Book of Mormon, and they are receptive. My approach, is to not to be a threat to their beliefs. Even though I will speak to them about the use of alcohol, or smoking, I leave them room to still make their own choice. And I do that with all the subjects that could potentially start a debate.

@XYU what are those truths that were preserved without debate from the time of His ministry, and what church held fast to those doctrines followed by Jesus Christ Himself. Have all the churches agreed since the doctrine was given? We have thousands of denominations, because of ones rejection of doctrine or another. I know of a Pentecostal pastor that teaches the monotheistic doctrine, and then another Pentecostal pastor that teaches polytheism. So who decides which of these men are correct. Those which claims they are the authority on biblical interpretation are liars, God is the final authority of interpretation, and God only reveals His secrets to the Prophets. So without revelation it is less than a perfect interpretation by far.

Went to Catholic school for middle school and high school and it was interesting seeing the similarities between the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Catholicism. We both claim to be the church Christ founded so I think we should learn from each other, despite the differences. But, overall, my experience with them has overall strengthened my own testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has allowed me to start, with confidence, my time as a full-time missionary.

On our honeymoon at a lodge up in the mountains, my wife and I attended the Bible study of a Baptist church across the street. It was pretty fun - I think they were in the gospel of John somewhere. They were quite welcoming, even when it came out that we were LDS.

I commend you all for your commitment to inter-faith dialogue and to experiencing other religious services. (I say this a non-member, but one who has attended a few LDS Church services, as well as number of other religious services as well.) Also, there are indeed a number of similarities between Islam and the LDS Church, both in terms if doctrine as well as how the religion itself came to be. It is fascinating to compare and contrast them.

Similarities between Mormonism and Islam Joseph Smith & Muhammad 1. Both faiths were founded by a single solitary man - Each claiming to be God's "last great prophet” 2. Both men were disgruntled with their previous religion: Mohammad with Arabian Polytheism and Smith with Episcopal Christianity. 3. Both men claimed to have been visited by angels (Mohammed by Gabriel; Smith by Moroni) who gave them an extra-Biblical 'secret' revelation from God. 4. Both men discredited the Bible as being "changed by wicked and corrupt priests" (neither gave a date for such a change, a person who changed it, or a specific passage that was 'corrupted') 5. Both men wrote a book that contained their secret revelations. Muhammad wrote the Quran and Smith wrote the "Book of Mormon" 6. Apologists for Islam claim that such a complicated work from such a young uneducated Mohammad is proof of the Quran's divine inspiration. Apologists for Mormonism claim that such a complicated work from such a young uneducated Joseph Smith is proof of the Book of Mormon's divine inspiration 7. Christian apologists find neither work to be much of a literary accomplishment as both books borrow and/or plagiarize heavily from the Bible - the very book that both authors condemned as untrustworthy. 8. The Christology varies wildly from the Biblical Christology. In Islam - Jesus is a prophet only not the Son of God (biblical view); In Mormonism - Jesus is one of many gods (not God Almighty) and is the spirit brother of Lucifer/Satan 9. Both Islam and Mormonism had splits after the death of their founder based on disputed blood lineage of the faith's successor. 10. Both faiths have an infamous tie to the date 9/11 - Islam - Islamic fundamentalists attacked New York and slaughtered 3000 unsuspecting men, women, and children on 9/11/2001. Mormonism - Mormon militia (under the authority of Brigham Young) cowardly attacked 140 unsuspecting men, women, and children as they passed through Southern Utah in covered wagons on 9/11/1857. 11. Both Mohammad and Smith claimed to be "restoring true religion" to the earth because "Judaism (Islam) and Christianity (Mormonism) disagreed among themselves which was evidence that they were incorrect and illegitimate and therefore true religion was "lost from the earth." 12. Both Mohammad and Smith were polygamists and made polygamy a major part of their newly introduced faiths. 13. Both men made the claim that their newly "revealed" books were the most perfect ever written. Then subsequently after the prophet's death both works underwent significant changes and edits. 14. Both leaders, Mohammad and Joseph Smith, had chief lieutenants defect from the faith while under their leadership citing “issues” around the translation process of their definitive religious writings: the Qu’ran and the Book of Mormon.

That was a historical fact which doesn't prove anything. Christianity has had its splits (Catholic, various Orthodox, Protestantism). By your logic christianity is wrong. 10. The only massacre by a group of Mormons after being chased out of New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois doesn't prove anything other than our peacefulness. Brigham Young didn't order the murder. 11. Here is a half truth. Both claimed to be restoring something lost. Joseph Smith, never to my knowledge, said disagreement was proof of the apostasy. 12. It is debatable whether polygamy was a major part of the religion which Joseph Smith founded. Mormon polygamy didn't include forced marriages and sex slaves from conquerings. 13. The Book of Mormon has had typo corrections, grammatical corrections and changing of idioms into the meanings. There haven't been significant changes to The Book of Mormon. 14. Those who helped Joseph Smith translate The Book of Mormon never left because of translation disputes. In fact the 3 witnesses while disassociated from Joseph Smith never denied their testimonies.

I've been to a Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall and their services are very calm :)) they sing really calm hymns at the beginning and then have some people come up to speak young or old sometimes some seem more professional and some seem really confused but so very happy to speak. They sometimes put on little skits too it is very interesting and sometimes they end in a prayer or another hymn. I also found out they do not believe Jesus died on a cross they believed he died on a Stake. They are very very VERY loving and kind people. I've been there and have grown up in a Baptist Church. :))

I think every religion has something positive but please keep in mind that you absolutely HAVE to do your research before joining any church! It can be very difficult to reprogram yourself if you find that it is not for you. My situation exactly. I won’t give details so as not to bash on any particular religion. I read that you are still at home with your parents so you must be young. Just to give some loving advice from someone who has lived through the process. Please dig deep! The outside surface of every religion is beauty and kindness and fellowship, but to 100% follow a religion you should be aware of the deep history and rules and how it was founded, etc. study and learn! Don’t be afraid to ask hard questions! Once you’re in it can be really hard to get out. Once you get out it can take years for you to get over all the disturbing realities. God bless you friend! 🙏💗

I have my account on a language exchange website. On the website, many people ask me what religion I believe in. I am a LDS member, so of course I always answer "I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints". They seem to be surprised and say "Do not you believe in Shinto/Buddhism!?", "Oh are you a christian? I did not think there were christians in your country". And some of them tell me the religion they believe in. I find this interesting.

I was raised in a poly religious family. My mom was baptized LDS when I was 8 and so was I. Between 9 and 14 I became Seventh day Adventist with my Dad. At 14 I went back to live with my mom and I became LDS again. Before my mission I went to the temple for the first time and was mostly confused and a bit shocked by portrayal of other religions preachers as being in the service of the devil. That message has since been taken out of the endowment ceremony. at age 50 I came to the shocking conclusion that all religions are man made and ultimately truth is in the eye of the beholder.

Berkey Family Don’t confuse religions with spirituality, I am a firm believer that there is a God , just not one in the confines of any book. Prayer has been a mainstay in my life since I was old enough to to talk. I pray many times a day and often have lengthly prayers to God on what is happening in my life. My wife died last year so it has been a rough go. I have 2 wonderful sons who I find joy in each and everyday. I am done with mythology and dogma and I am a lot happier for it. I am not out the convert anyone to my way of thinking, but I will voice my opinion. If my sons choose to continue their faith in the church they are free. To do so, I have told my youngest that I will pay for his mission if he decides to go. So I do find a lot of joy in life, treating people the way I would want to be treated I find very rewarding.

Berkey Family I having praying since I was about 4 or 5 , to me goal in prayer has always been bout communication, when a child is hungry he knows to ask his parents for food. A Catholic could ask a Mormon how can you pray when you don’t have the guidance of the Pope, Priest, Rosary , the sacraments of the church. A Hindu would ask you the same thing. I am not out to change anyone’s point, but I will voice my opinion. If my sons want to continue their belief in the LDS church then I am fine with that. I told my youngest that if he chose for himself to go on a mission that I would pay for it. I myself know that Joseph Smith was a 19th century con man. Please don’t consider my statement in anyway a personal attack. If a man slays another mans sacred cow he will hate him for it, such is the nature of people’s ties to religions.

I've been to JW church. It was like the MTC. They practiced door approaches and sang some songs. When we baptized their member I was incredibly impressed by him. His family (mother and siblings) would not communicate with him anymore. I was floored (as a missionary) to see this individual leave his family to follow a higher truth. That was early 1990s and I'm still floored by his example.

I attend a Christian college which adheres Independent Baptist theology and they are VERY closed to the ideas of other Christian theologies. It’s just crazy to me that the LDS church seems to be the only group doing the things the Bible and other Scriptures command them to do.

I've been to Catholic mass (and not just on Christmas Eve) - the First Presbyterian Church (on S. Temple in SLC) - 7th Day Adventist (Mimi is spot on that they are soooo friendly & welcoming) - a couple of Buddhist funerals (one in Japan, the other here - both were very different) - and an Episcopalian church (sorta like the formality of a Catholic mass, but a bit different) - the Jewish Synagogue here in SLC but just visited with some friends & spoke with the Rabbi, not to a service. Think that's all the different churches I've been to, other than the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which I am a member of.

Other than funerals, weddings etc at Protestant churches; the only time I've been to another religions services was a Catholic service. I thought it was strange and sort of cool at the same time. I didn't feel uncomfortable. They did some things that we do kind of, like sacrament. Nobody had any scriptures though, which I thought was weird.

This was interesting and well presented, just a word about the Jewish services. I am happy that you enjoyed yourself but I feel like you totally didn't understand it. So a quick explanation - religious Jews pray 3 times a day, on Monday, Thursday and Saturday they take the Torah scrolls out (what the bar mitzvah boy was reading from), which is basically the old testament in HEBREW (that's the language Jews speak and pray in). If there is a bar mitzvah ceremony on a specific day - like the day you visited, the bar mitzvah boy will read a portion of the daily reading. The boy is supposed to learn to read it, not to know it by heart. The 3 different daily services are conducted from prayer books, the daily prayers are always the same and on Saturday you might have a "sermon" which is actually more of a lesson about that week's Torah portion. That's it in a nutshell - there's obviously a lot more to it, but too much for a comment. And, you are right, different communities (European, Iranian, Iraqi, Syrian, Egyptian, Moroccan, etc.) have different synagogues, and while the prayers are all the same and have been for thousands of years, each ethnic community has different styles and melodies.

To add; He would have in most batei midrash only been making the bracha before the actual torah reading. A sefer torah is very difficult to read because of the traditional, err, font used in addition to lack of nikudot (the little dots that tell us there's supposed to be a vowel there and the lack of punctuation (both medeival inventions). There is usually another guy (called a gabbai) following along in book form to correct the reader. What he would actually read is called the haftarah. The Hebrew Bible is divided into three general categories Torah, Neviim (prophets) and Ketuvim (writings). A long long time ago it was forbidden to read the torah so the sages devised a system of reading a section of the latter two that corresponded thematically to the weekly torah portion. A similar development was playing dreidel because it was forbidden to study torah so when the cops show up you aren't studying but rather gambling which was totally legal. When i became bar mitzvah the weekly torah portion was Parsha Noach (genesis 6:9-11:32) and the haftarah was Isaiah 54:1-55:5.

@8:28 it's hebrew. The primary liturgical language and all torah and haftorah readings are in Hebrew. Yiddish is a folk language specefic to those of us of eastern and central European heritage. Basically a blending of Hebrew, old French, low German, and slavic influences. You won't hear it in shul (synagogue) unless it's a hasidic shul in which the drash (sermon/ homily/ etc) would be in yiddish or in conversation among older attendees. Personal FoR, I'm from an orthodox Jewish background (but non religious now) and unusual in my generation for being fluent in yiddish.

An explanation on terminology here. The word Shul is the yiddish. Beit Midrash (literally house of study) is the hebrew. Synagogue is Greek, which I'm sure are fine people but they tried to kill us once so I personally don't use it. Then again they failed and we got jelly donuts out of the deal so i don't mind if others do. More modern Jews will sometimes use the word Temple but traditional Jews will never. For those from a traditional background there can only be one Jewish temple which would have to be on some slightly contested real estate.

@@seans5289 Hey! We believe that after Christ died, the Church he had established began to be corrupt by the teachings of men. It is illustrated in the Bible that the Church of Christ began to fall away. We believe that there were still lots of truths since the Church had been established by Christ so that's why we believe other religions have lots of truth. But we also believe that the church had to be restored again according to how Christ had established it. We believe that the fulness of Christ's gospel was established by Joseph Smith under the direction of God and Christ. :) Feel free to shoot me a DM on Instagram or Facebook if you have any questions! Saints Unscripted: Thanks for the reply. I’m guessing this is David. You know me, just trying to get to the bottom of why people believe things. For instance, this paragraph you just finished was an impressive list of beliefs, but I’m still looking for a reliable mechanism for finding out whether beliefs about the supernatural are true. If I recall, you told me that you prayed about the Book of Mormon and possibly a few other doctrines, then accept the others as true based on your personal revelation track record. For me, prayer is not reliable enough, since it leads good-intentioned people to those corrupted churches you mentioned. As for the DM route, I really appreciate the one-on-one, but I also like to mix in public discussions whenever I can. Not everyone is confident enough to ask important questions in a public forum, but they may benefit from seeing others engage in thoughtful, civil discussions about normally inflammatory topics.

I’ve been to several other churches. While they all had facets that were good about them, they all were missing the greater truth and light - and the only church holding true saving power. We can all love and respect each other even while being different. At the end of the day, I’m still going to invite ou to my church and feel horrible if you say no. Sort of like inviting someone not to jump off that really tall bridge - it’s not so much for my own sake. I don’t have to like you or enjoy the same things as you; but, I know that this is the oxygen of eternal life and would be irresponsible not to offer it.

My ward is a fair distance from me, so when I can't get there I'll go and sit in at my local Catholic church just to be in amongst it! Really appreciate their beliefs, and the beauty of their services. A chunk of my family are JW's, and their Sunday's are very very much like our own (no sacrament though..)! Our stake is part of a religious diversity Council - our kids play soccer with the local Muslim and Jewish kids, we have dinners, service missions together etc. Great to see everyone get along (though, if anyone's beliefs are more often mocked than others, it's ours, which is a bit disheartening.. So, this may, or may not help. I doubt I'll change your mind, but sometimes another perspective can give something more to chew on. And I don't know where in the world you are from, but I can delve a bit into our own country's problems. Your fear is a fear many have - and I know in countries like Britain and Australia etc. where we have no bill of rights that guarantees our freedoms, having our speech curtailed about certain religions can amplify that fear, especially since our own religion (or Christian religions in general) isn't given the same curtesy. It's why things get covered up, problems spread (like the gangs), and that's how fear in the public amplifies. Then there's a lot of long words that are liberally flung about, and court battles when people do speak out, and that ramps it up even further. I don't know how we ended up in this position, but I think in trying to protect a minority people from persecution with all good intentions, it's started to turn on itself - just like any restriction of rights does depending on the hands holding the reins. However, when I've actually spoken to the Muslim's I know, they all say the same thing: Yes, they hate it when Muhammad and their religion is mocked (much like us I'd suggest! I'm not a huge fan of what the great and spacious have been throwing at us more and more recently), but none of them want to perpetuate this idea that people of their religion should receive special treatment - one of the very many reasons they left their Theocratic countries is because of the opressive restrictions, and they don't want that to have followed them here. Unfortunately in amongst 1000 freedom loving Muslim, there is one that goes hard in the paint for the literal interpretation of their text. And unfortunately, just like any group of people, the pressure to conform to the loudest voices (*cough* provotwitter *cough*) can cause people to capitulate just to keep from being thrown out of the tribe. Sometimes a religion's biggest downfall is the culture, not the beliefs. Here's my solution - show them a world in which they don't feel they have to capitulate. That freedom is for everyone, and that they have the agency to keep their freedom with our support. That their tribe is bigger than just those with the angriest voices. When we see that there's a need to lift them up from being pulled under, lift! Shutting people down does nothing but radicalise them further, because persecution breeds resentment. Its a both sides situation at this point, and the only people I blame are those holding the reins. It doesn't serve anyone but the ole devil himself - but then most politicians do.. ;) I ramble, but it's with good intent! Like I said, just another perspective to throw in the mix :)

As a missionary, I went to another religion’s church meeting as there was a lot of animosity towards us and we wanted to reach out. The minister was taken aback to see us and taught a sermon against Joseph Smith. It was about how we should not worship Joseph and should worship Jesus Christ . We stood up and said Amen . We never taught anyone from the congregation but they were a lot more accepting. I think there is a place to build and make the world a better place.

Thanks David you put a good word in for us JWs. The cool thing is that we’re all singing off the same hymn sheet in the sense that we all own bibles and fundamentally everything we JWs do and teach, is all found in that book that sits and collects dust and cobwebs at the back of most people’s cupboards. Even to this day I’ll sometimes read a bible verse and be unsure of the exact meaning, so I’ll go off and research it. I’m naturally a very thorough person and there’s rarely many half measures with me. It’s as though I just need understand what everything in the bible means so I can piece it together. You see , the saddest thing is that many people out there don’t have true happiness Cos they don’t really understand what it means to exist and why it is that we are where we are, they are confused. And preaching the message of Christ and God is something the bible commands us to do, so we find joy in it. It’s like we are on Gods divine mission.

I am LDS but am Catholic educated. I am so grateful to have both. Catholic service makes little sense unless you have a Catholic education. So in the Catholic education you learn about all the different heresies or different types of Christianity that existed from about 250 AD to about 1400 AD. It is a great categorization methodology. The theology is tighter and more organized than Mormonism. Mormonism is about the questions and Catholicism is more about these are the answers. While I liked studying all the heresies and orthodoxy of Catholicism, I am hopelessly Mormon. I have questions. LOL.

We definitely believe The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Christ's one and only restored Church. When I read that line from Joseph's vision I just interpret that as, "they're not the church I (Christ) established, and many of their teachings are incorrect." I don't think it meant, "Every single aspect of every other church in the world is wrong and will slowly suck you down to Hell." We believe we're Christ's church, but we definitely do not have a monopoly on truth. There's truth in most every religion I can think of. That truth is worthy of praise.

Hey, if somebody overcomes their addictions through Scientology's programs, awesome. There are those in any religion that are negatively affected. Some more than others (and maybe Scientology is one of them). But there are also those for whom the religion has been life-changing in a positive way, and those things are worth praise IMO.

Michael Scott’s Divali song killed me 😂 that festival is usually celebrated outdoors though because a big part of the celebration is lighting sometimes hundreds of clay pots (like the lamps in the Bible) and there’s lots of fireworks! It’s literally referred to as the Festival of Lights and is a week long celebration! I wish I could invite you guys..you’ll love it! The missionaries here thoroughly enjoy it and they especially enjoy the food!

Interesting that David picked out Islam to stress how similar it is with Mormonism...since both absolutely are. 1. Both are founded by a so-called "prophet" who claimed the existing Christians "got it wrong". 2. Both so-called prophets claimed an angel gave them new scripture. 3. Both so-called prophets practiced polygamy and had a miraculous dispensation from God to have even MORE wives than those around them. 4. Both waged war with their neighbors over territory and allegiance. 5. Both so-called prophets died without a clear heir/successor which caused a rift in the religion. Wow! You know...if you really look at it, one might think Joseph Smith actually took a cue from Mohammed!

Scripture clearly says we are judged by our works, and gives many warnings (from Jesus too) about sinning, especially when we know the truth. non-believers don't read the bible, its warnings are for those whose eyes have been opened. Your works are PROOF that you are saved, NOT the other way around. When a person has TRULY accepted Christ, their way of thinking and behaving is TRANSFORMED (Not all at once - It CAN, take time) and this is EVIDENCE that they had received SALVATION. And how much OBEDIENCE you display after being saved is used as the measure of your REWARD in Heaven. Matter 24:13;Matter 10:22 The dead are judged by what is written in the book, i.e., according to their works. Scripture repeatedly says that judgment will be according to works (Ps. 62:12; Prov. 24:12; Jer. 17:10; 32:19; Matt. 16:27; Rom. 2:6; 14:12; Rev. 2:23; 22:12).
