At the gym today I was asked by the front desk assistant to update my membership photo as the one on their screen doesn't look like me anymore and when they showed it to me I can say I can see what they meant. She then sad that I have done fantastic over the last year. What a confidence boost that was. Today needles to say I smashed my workout. If there is a moral to this it's that even if you don't notice the changes to your body others will and do. So never give up there's always someone out there willing you on even if they don't always say it to you.

I started at 243, down to 212 now, and my motivation has been more esoteric. I want to keep my body running well, I want to feed it things it needs, not things it wants, which I had been doing for too long obviously. I'm eating REAL food, drinking water with lemon or other fruits instead of soda, and walking or jogging every day, and I have not felt better.

You perfectly summed up what my recent journey has been like; I saw your transformation video 3 months ago, and that external motivation sparked me into action. Since then, I started eating right and lifting at my local gym. I'm down from 225 lbs to 207, and am looking forward to hitting the 199 mark! Have also been able to increase average weight lifted by 35%. At this point, I'm going strong for myself, my health, and the value that working out brings to my entire life. Thank you for the inspiration, and keep doing what you're doing! It's helping me and thousands others every day.

I think a way to "get it done", whether that's motivation or what, is to figure out your pitfalls and then work around them. When I first started lifting getting out the door and actually going to the gym was the hardest part (it's still is, but it's not as hard anymore), so sometimes I'd call maybe one of my parents, say "hey, I'm going to the gym, want to talk on the phone while I go there?", and that would get me there. I do little tricks pretty much every time I go still, like if I don't feel motivated I'll watch this or another channel that motivates me, and I'll pause the video, change into my gym clothes, then watch a bit more before I go. Once I'm there I have my stuff that I need to do before I get to go home, and that's not a problem at all, most of it is enjoyable, and the stuff that isn't is over quick enough. I'm not really overweight, but I do have some excess bodyfat I'm working on loosing and I want to gain muscle and definition, so right now still classing myself as a beginner I'm working with a small energy deficit while slowly building muscle, and I think actually realising that's what it takes to be able to maintain it and not go crazy like so many times before helps me a ton when it comes to sticking with it. If you've done crazy diets before, a slight caloric deficit, at least for me, really isn't even that hard. What's hard is not lowering it further because you can, but I know now that leads to a rebound. So it's that simple: I just have to allow it to take time.

I believe that extrinsic is inspiration and intrinsic is motivation. Motivation is what drives you to do whatever it is you want to do, nothing aside from yourself can achieve that drive.

Hi John, I just wanted to say that you do a great job with your channel. I've recently finished up a cut from flabby 209lbs to 184lbs. I'm an aspiring competitive strongman, but unfortunately let myself go a little bit. It was difficult to stick to a diet over 7 months, but the stuff you put out really helps come up with useful approaches to breaking plateaus. If you ever find yourself in London, I invite you to come to the Commando Temple Gym. All the best Sam

One thing that I like to remember is that if you want to change your life, you need to make eating well and exercise a HABIT. It takes TIME to change habits, and you won't always be motivated. It's like the saying "motivation is like a bad boyfriend (or gf)- never there when you need it!" Instead, make exercise something you do each day for your self care (like brushing your teeth). Just wake up and keep doing it until it becomes part of your life. This takes away the pressure for every workout to be a "good" one, and having to psych yourself up. Plan it as part of your routine, and when you're feeling motivated -smash it! When you're not, just go for a walk. Go to the gym and just use the treadmill. Doing SOMETHING good for your body will always make you feel good.

It's easy to get initially inspired about the idea of a goal, but sometimes the steps you have to take to achieve it can be hard, boring, not fun, etc. I think that's where a lot of people falter is the idea being fun and the actuality being not fun. But you just gotta get through the hard parts or learn to love them.
@courtneymcfarland83338 жыл бұрын
Also with weight loss it's an interesting thing in that once you achieve that goal you have to maintain it, and that is really tough. I got to my ideal weight at one point and was so happy & confidant, stayed there a few years but then let things slide a bit and drinking wine and eating out and sweet treats eventually became more fun than being thin... Getting back on track now and with a different mindset and older/wiser too. I think motivation to maintain weight loss is even harder than the initial weight loss.

I've been watching your videos for some time now, and I really enjoy these Mornin Oats sessions! A suggestion for a topic: balancing faith and weight loss. I can tell through your videos that you're a good Christian dude; your faith and joy really shine through in every video! I want to know how you are/were balancing weight loss with your faith. I know for a while during my journey, I made my weight loss my god (ex. i stopped reading my Bible in the morning because I was so focused on getting up and working out), and I really wish I hadn't. I'm just curious as to how your story goes with all this, and how you see fitness intertwining with Christianity. Have a great day!! Keep up the great work :)

I think external motivation fuels the internal. We have an inner desire and make a goal/plan to achieve. In order to continue toward our goal we need frequent motivation/inspiration from external sources. When I decided to lose weight and get healthy, I turned to KZbin, and other sources, for motivation. Then I decided to start my own channel to hopefully motivate others. We help one another, in whatever capacity, on this journey to good health

Motivation is the spark that makes you want to change, but at the same time motivation is VERY short lived. That is where discipline comes in, and that is where the actual change happens. Because lets face it how many times do we get inspired to do something only to quit the day after?

@JulesGetsFit8 жыл бұрын
You were right, it is extrinsic motivation :). Also, what is funny is everything that you said about extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation is quite on point with the research. Intrinsic motivation has a stronger hold and driving factor and extrinsic motivation is short lived. After the extrinsic motivation goes away, motivation will slowing disappear. I am just going to stop here before I nerd out! I am an educational psychologist, so I could have an entire conversation about motivational theories!

I think of it in terms of our body is like a car. The battery is the external source that can start the motor but once it's started the battery alone can not keep it going but it was the spark that started it and as long as you are in idle there will be times you get extra external energy(gas pedal) that it will rev up the engine. Just my thoughts during 4 am cardio lol
