Anne thanks for the great tour! but is this a hobby farm or there is good revenue coming from it ?
@AnneofAllTrades Жыл бұрын
The way our farm generates revenue is very different than most farms do, but it is very much a business. If it were just a "hobby farm," I'd advise any sane person to find a new hobby. In addition to raising almost all our own food, I work in cooperation with several other farmers to sell items privately and at farmer's markets. I raise and sell livestock, dairy, meat and hay, but we don't do anything on a large enough scale to generate measurable income beyond covering all the costs incurred by various farming endeavors: the purchase of livestock, the cost of feed, seeds, other farm incidentals, the occasional small infrastructure and/or implement purchase. Big infrastructure/improvement costs, the cost of purchasing our land, and the cost of my time would bankrupt a small farm business like this in a hurry if it weren't for the real purpose of the farm, which is as a mechanism for my education business: I write for several magazines and travel the country teaching workshops about small scale farming, homesteading and self-sufficiency/traditional skillsets. It would be possible to generate more income from the farming endeavors, but there is a law of diminishing returns there. I enjoy the scale I currently do things, and scaling further would make it a lot less enjoyable for me personally, because I don’t really have any intention of leaving my full time job- the balance is fun for me.

I just happened upon your video and I am enjoying it so far. You got me to thinking about how to keep the hawks away from your chickens though, because I have the same problem. And it just occurred to me that putting up fake owls might be a solution so I googled it and sure enough, according to Google fake owls will help keep your chickens safe. I wish I would have thought of it for myself a few years ago but it might help both of us now. We had two jerseys that were nearly identical to yours and their names or cinnamon and honey respectively. Keep up the good work.

I have used the plastic owls and it’s tough to quantify how much of a difference they actually made, but happy to report since I brought the chickens closer in to the buildings (and closer to the LGD’s that guard my goats) I’ve not lost a chicken to a predator of any kind in a couple years.

"Devil's Armpit" LOL! Currently living without air conditioning in SW Michigan during some of the worst humidity I can recall. (That's half a century of summers!) I can only imagine what a whole summer season must be like in TN. I've visited that fine state in the summer. Also smelled the musk of a buck goat on a hot morning. (it was a fainter or a Nigerian, I'm not sure which) Smacked you in the face when you opened the door and made you wish you didn't have a nose. Years later I got goats of my own - go figure. You're a hardy gal facing the crock-pot heat and caring for all those animals. I started today with your "weeds are good" video and had to stay to watch a few more.

Hey Anne! It was so nice meeting you tonight at the VIP dinner. I’m sorry I was so emotional. I really like “Butter!” I kinda like Better Cheddar too though - it’s a little long though? Jeffrey’s a STUD! 😂 Let me know when it’s time to have kids! I’ll come help (and maybe relieve you of a couple if you’d like to sell some). We have 3 Nigerian dwarves now. We are still new to it - never kidded or milked…a goat. The clip idea is a pretty cool trick! I want jersey for dairy and dexter for meat too! I’ll have to work on the hubby for the dexter though. He’s excited about angus. The disease testing video was very informational and perfectly timed for me since I’m looking now for my dairy cow. I’ve done one farm visit but struggling to find a2/a2 no grain dairy lines.
@AnneofAllTrades Жыл бұрын
Hey! It was so great chatting last year. Looking forward to this year! Shoot me an email marketing@anneofalltrades.com and we can get you on the list for some babies! When cow time comes, look into getting a Jersey/Dexter (Belfair) girl if you can, a2a2 is more likely in that cross, the teats are generally better for hand milking, and it’s way easier to keep dairy cows fat on grass without grain because dexters are much easier keepers than jerseys. Bonus, Jersey/Dexter beef is the best beef I’ve ever had, and you can do AI obviously, but if you ever have to get a bull, Dexter bulls are super gentle, but I’d NEVER recommend getting a Jersey bull. They’re a nightmare on small farms.
