Morning rush hour at Northolt Airport

A selection of aircraft movements at RAF Northolt on a couple of weekday mornings. Includes two C-17s, a BAe 146, Bombardier Challenger & a Bombardier Global Express. As you can see, the RAF Police have to sometimes deal with some very impatient drivers while aircraft come in. ;)

A lot of folks were interested in watching the Globemaster reversing in a previous video, 1:10 have a closer look at a member of the crew on the ramp helping guide the aircraft back!

The Loadmaster is the crew member on the ramp guiding the aircraft back, he has a headset for communicating with the rest of the operational crew.

Hercules airplanes can reverse on their own as they can alter the pitch on their prop blades.

Reminds me of my driving test years ago. I had to reverse the corner outside a packed pub in Sheffield on a boiling hot Saturday afternoon after the local match. I suddenly felt all eyes turn towards me. Being female, they might have expected me to muck it up. I must have done an OK job because I actually received a round of applause. Probably the most nerve wracking thing I have ever done, and I still think the examiner had an evil streak for picking that particular location!

The departure goes right over my old school, ( Oak Farm). This made me a keen airoplane spotter in the 60s. My friend and I one summer holiday road our bikes along the A40 ( on the path) to the side entrance in the Ruislip road ( now the main entrance). We rode through the gate up to the hangars, parked our bikes, went over all of the aircraft in the hangar. Then rode out of the gate without anyone stopping us. One of the aircraft I still remember seeing in the hangar that day was a Belgian air force Fouga Magister BG 54 ( I think but could be wrong). I also remember seeing it depart some months later. Great memories of Northolt.

I went to Abbotsfield school from 1966 to 1970 Do you remember the 707 ( I think ) that landed accidentally at Northolt. Remember the whole school watched it take off after it was stripped to lighten it

What, flying in or driving past? If the latter, you're welcome to it. I did it for 8½ years (1994-2002) and that road was one of the most clogged roads in the area during the rush-hour, or at least it was and in all that time, I probably saw half a dozen aircraft! Perhaps, in these Covid days the traffic may not be so bad.

Worth noting that in most cases the lights aren't there because of a risk of an aircraft hitting traffic physically, but because the wake turbulence coming off them could cause an accident after they pass as drivers wouldn't in general be expecting it...

One of the great parts about the C17s is their short runway ability, nothing is better for getting lots of heavy kit onto small airfields.

It's a thing called reverse thrust if you live near an airport when you hear a jet land you'll hear a loud roar the jet is coming in at 140knts = 160mph you come out of reverse at 60knts=80mph

ADS-B Exchange is sometimes better for military as it allows you to filter out the normal commercial stuff. Not all military flights are visible regardless.

Hard to give an average, Monday - Fridays, usually tick over with a couple of departures/arrivals every hour from the morning then gets busier between 1500-1900
