Jurgen Raps is a freaking stud. 40 years of experience taught him how to plant that A380 on that runway with a 15 knot tailwind. There really is no substitute for an experienced pilot who can anticipate air traffic control before they even speak. Not to mention the fact that he maintains a sterile cockpit from start to finish. Good man. We'll miss you in your retirement, Jurgen.

Been a long time since I landed at SFO. Thank you, Gentlemen, for the scenery and pillow soft landing. I remember almost landing in the bay one particularly windy day. Safe journeys to you.
@rickbailey1893 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love the flow of the protocol on approach to SFO. The sights from high up looking down were gorgeous. Landing a "flying hotel" takes plenty of skill on a clear day and far more skill and experience during inclement weather. These German pilots did a great job of landing that big boy plane. Thank You for showing us all what the passengers never get to see firsthand. Loved all the electronic navigational instruments. The mechanical movements of the plane thrill me. This was my dream since I was a little kid. To fly a commercial airliner. The aviation industry lost a potential commercial pilot going back to the 1990's. The loss was greater for me than for them.

It is great weather today, but it can be treacherous when there is fog. They had an open air balcony showing the tarmac in past years. It was a great place to watch 707s, and DC-8s and the newest airliner the 727s. There were propeller driven aircraft like the Electra. Flying into SFO made you feel like you were landing in the bay, but just as you were about to touch the water a landing strip would appear. They used to have a flight from Oakland to SFO to position aircraft. Lasted 15 minutes, cost 12 dollars. Money well spent.

OK, it explains his desire to go visual approach instead of ILS. He probably wanted it toooo much, visibly freaking out when the First Officer called out the ILS approach (which is the way they're used to execute it). Putting so much pressure on the crew is *inappropriate!* The result didn't take long to appear: just few more minutes into the approach and you notice the FO's delayed/mumbled readbacks of the ATC instructions, which is a clear indication of overstress. Shame, Captain Rapps! You should have mind those 600 people behind your back more than your pleasure to fly the bird one last time...

In aviation, pilots are ALWAYS "flying the aircraft" whether it is on autopilot or not. They must check their instruments every few seconds as well as look outside whenever they are approaching an airport or taking off. Both those times (TO&Ls) are the most dangerous times of flying. You must get on the ILS, the scope, well, I won't go into detail, except to say that you are ALWAYS busy when flying an aircraft (or should be!). As a GA pilot myself, I can certainly verify that the most dangerous place to be in flying is around the airport! But it needn't be, if everyone follow the rules and pays attention to EVERYTHING! Sometimes mistakes are made, the ATC may make a mistake, or you may, or another aircraft may, but in general, a mistake will be corrected if everyone is on the ball and paying attention to what is going on around them, ALL THE TIME!

I have flown almost all over the world. My first time landing at this airport, I’ll never forget looking out the window and being FREAKED OUT how close we were to the water. I thought to myself “surely the captain would say something if we were landing in the water”… it’s a scene man…landing here. BEAUTIFUL view of the bay from the sky though.

I have had the same feeling. You look down and the water is getting closer and closer and I was thinking I hope we reach the runway soon.

Yeah. My first time landing there, you just keep seeing water and more water getting closer to the surface and right when you think you're going to land on water the land appears and you touchdown. Pretty awesome!

Idk why people say its ugly, i'm hella shooked over how it looks. Surely it's big and bulky, but that bulk is smooth, thats what matters

If anyone wants to know what Wake Turbulance means in full terms, here it is: Wake turbulance is caused by an aircraft wingtips from the aircraft in front of you. The bigger the aircraft, the bigger the vortices, and more turbulance. Pilots and ATC leave plenty of space from 2 aircraft. If an Airbus A380 took off, and you are in an a320, you would have to wait for up to 2-5 minutes for the vortices to clear. Thats all I have, comment below if I missed anything!!
