I find the commentary as you move off most instructive: a little astern to push us off from the bank and not too much throttle as we go ahead so that we are not pulled back in. I have seen far too many people blasting forward and wondering why they cannot get going. I’d appreciate more such commentary in your videos; I’m sure there is loads you could teach me.

The trouble is there's danger of having 60 feet of line shafting attached to the gearbox and a choice of various Lister, Gardner, Bolinder and Kelvin Marine propulsion. Possibly some Stuart Turner, Sissons or Bellis and Morcom steam power for warmer winter missions! Dangerous viewing...........

For some random reason the camera sound stopped working initially which is what you can hear - tea time is done on the move as is all food - no time to hang around, time is money! :)

That's the fastest I think I've ever heard that engine run lol. Didn't you forget to reengage the thing by the switch? And when did you put it back in gear?

Im seriously planning to buy one of this boats but thoose engines never look reliable,wondering if there is a chance to fit a offboard engine, and get more space,,for storage,.
@mykaskin
@mykaskin 5 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't put an outboard on a narrowboat, though I have seen it done. Most narrowboats have modern diesel engines which are as reliable as you'd want so long as you remember to service it properly. With low work loads even engines like Victoria's can be very reliable, and usually easily fixable if you can get the spare parts - they do cost more to run due to parts availability and lack of suitable engineers however.
@mykaskin
@mykaskin 5 жыл бұрын
Also, space saving on modern engines isn't much of an issue as they often under covers and provide a useful storage area.

Theirs another video of the same engine starting up and he had a string system on the crank handle that automatically lowered the compression levers after a few turns on the crank. Worked a treat. It's a beautiful sound. Can you still get parts for them now?
@mykaskin
@mykaskin 7 жыл бұрын
Thats also my video - I just couldn't set up the string with one hand, and don't need it in the summer.
@jamesshanks2614
@jamesshanks2614 8 жыл бұрын
Most narrow boats you rent are modern diesels not old school like the one in this video turn the key on set the throttle and press the starter button after you have checked the fluids on the engine. Mind you when he is picking up his lines and pins he is doing it one handed while videoing what he is doing.

If it won't start can you push it down the river and drop it into gear like a manual transmission on a car, lol.. , I showed my husband this video because he said one year we will go to England on the canals for a vacation but after seeing this if it takes that much work to get the boat going each time you start I think we will just go to Mexico again .

The boat was built in 1931, but even though the engine was built in 1953, it has only ever been hand start only.

why is the water so muddy? just asking old one legged joseph t retired navy
@mykaskin
@mykaskin 6 жыл бұрын
Joseph Brendel it's a clay lined canal, but mostly it's from soil washed in when it rains. It's not very deep so boat movements and canal locks stir it up especially during the busier months.

Why do KZbinrs insist on doing tasks one handed and in doing so make them look so frustratingly complex (or just make a complete hash of the task), such as the unhooking of the rope from the chain when either a cap mount or chest mounted camera would free the other hand, or a tripod if the circumstance allowed. All that happens now is the viewer gets so frustrated that they either yell at the screen or turn off. The other factor on a narrowboat is the safety - we wouldn't want you to fall or drop the camera in the drink because the attention is more on filming than safety.
