WEEK 01- HGCBC SUNDAY SCHOOL LORD'S DAY: 05-Jan-2025 Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad "1689 LBCF: THE SINGULARITY OF GOD" 1689 LBCF CHAPTER 2: 1 1. The Lord our God is but one only living and true God; whose subsistence is in and of himself, infinite in being and perfection; whose essence cannot be comprehended by any but himself; a most pure spirit, invisible, without body, parts, or passions, who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; who is immutable, immense, eternal, incomprehensible, almighty, every way infinite, most holy, most wise, most free, most absolute; working all things according to the counsel of his own immutable and most righteous will for his own glory; most loving, gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin; the rewarder of them that diligently seek him, and withal most just and terrible in his judgments, hating all sin, and who will by no means clear the guilty. Introduction: - We cannot go beyond what is revealed in the Bible. We simply need to study the Word of God, as everything necessary for salvation and holiness is already contained within it. (ref. 2 Tim 3:15-17) - Our Confession of Faith outlines both doctrinal beliefs and practical applications. - ref. Exodus 20:3-6 - Man is fond of creating God in our own image (e.g., the gods of Greek mythology). - ref. Romans 1:25 - "Man cannot escape the truth that there is a God who will judge them and a God who demands worship. However, man refuses to face God, instead creating their own gods and idols." #hgcbccpulpit - 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 - "Biblical orthodoxy has the true and living God Himself at the core of doctrinal truth." -- Alan Dunn - Chapter 2 reflects on the first creed of Christianity, known as the Nicene Creed. - This Chapter presents a concise theology proper encapsulated in three paragraphs. - As we study the Confession of Faith, we should behold our God and invite others to behold the true God. (ref. Isaiah 40:9) - We are called to 'BEHOLD OUR GOD' because, in the fulfillment of our duty, people will be offended, and Christians will be persecuted for the sake of Christ. - Chapter 2 demands our most detailed analysis because it discusses the attributes of God (Paragraph 1), describes God’s relationship to His creation (Paragraph 2), and explains the doctrine of the Trinity (Paragraph 3).

WEEK 01 - HGCBC MORNING SERVICE LORD'S DAY: 05-JAN-2025 *SCRIPTURE READING: Micah 4 Bro. Christian Fairbanks *MORNING SERMON: 1 Corinthians 4:11-13 ESV Ptr. Jeremiah Jangad "SLANDERED FOR CHRIST" Focus Text: “To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.” 1 Corinthians 4:11-13 ESV Introduction: - "We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.” (We know that our Redeemer lives, and this is our assurance.) - In this section of Paul’s letter, he demonstrates through his own testimony how to apply Christ’s teachings from the Sermon on the Mount, particularly in responding to ridicule and persecution. - ref. Matthew 5:38-48 - They never let persecution hinder their proclamation of the Word and kept going. Kindness was their response to slander. 1. THE INEVITABILITY OF SLANDER - In their attempt to promote themselves, people would often resort to slandering others. - But the question is... HAVE YOU BEEN SLANDERED FOR CHRIST's SAKE? - [As Christians] People may slander and discredit you as you proclaim the truth. Since they cannot overthrow the truth, their focus shifts to targeting those who proclaim the truth, as no servant is greater than the master. - Slander means to have false, damaging statements about someone in order to harm one's reputation. This means to vilify or defame someone. This can happen to any believers for the sake of Jesus Christ. - If your life is dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ and you are serious about winning souls for Him, people may become uncomfortable and make fun of you. - ref. Matthew 5:11-12 - [As a believer], what makes you think you are exempt from persecution? In fact, the harder you follow Jesus Christ and the harder you strive to please God, the more evil will be spoken about you." #hgcbccpulpit - ref. 2 Peter 2:1-2; 2 Peter 2:10; Jude 8 - When we proclaim the gospel to unbelievers, they will really slander us. - Acts 15:45 (the unbelieving Jews) - Even among evangelicals (free-willers) - When you preach the sovereign grace of God in our salvation, you still get persecuted. 2. THE RIGHT RESPONSE TO SLANDER - "The biblical way to respond to slander is to pray for those who slander you, and entrust the situation to God. Have you prayed for those people who said evil things about you?" #hgcbccpulpit - Hebrews 12:2 ; Luke 22:63-64; Matthew 27:39-40 - 1 Peter 3:9 (our response to evil) - ref. Proverbs 10:22 (wait for God) - "When people treat you like rubbish, we should not seek to get even but instead be quick to entrust the situation to God. Christians are called not to retaliate." #hgcbccpulpit - The imprecatory - "The best way to deal with slander is to pray about it: God will either remove it, or remove the sting from it. Our own attempts at clearing ourselves are usually failures. Be quiet and let your Advocate plead your cause" - Charles Spurgeon - We [should] continue to entreat, beseech people by continuing to proclaim the gospel. - ref. Acts 2:40 - "When we are slandered, we should all the more maintain a God-centered outlook and remember that everything happens for our good. All our experiences should cause us to trust and worship God more." #hgcbccpulpit - 2 Peter 2:23 (Christ's example - Christ kept on proclaiming the gospel and forgiving people. - "May our testimony lead those who are hostile to be won to Christ." #hgcbccpulpit - "Slander, including self deception, is part of the remaining sin that we have to mortify." - "When someone slanders another to us, we must remember that we are not mainly fighting flesh and blood, but spiritual forces of evil [Ephesians 6:12). Satan knows that slander deadens and splits churches, poisons friendships, and fractures families." - Jon Bloom - [As Christians] We should continue to entreat and beseech people by faithfully proclaiming the gospel.
