Thanks for the reminder about air circulation. I live in the high desert, and root crops do well here - garlic, onions and potatoes. I just harvested seed from my garlic, and I think I will be doing it in a big way next year.

Thank you for your very informative video on garlic curing, selecting and storing, harvested in season. It looks beautiful. I've been trying to find out how to store / preserve hard neck seed Garlic, Tulip and Daffodil bulbs for planting next year, they were purchased much too late to plant this autumn, unfortunately the soil froze early this year, barely froze at all last autumn or winter. . Do you @MorningChores or anyone, here, have any good tips, thank you in advance.

Take apart a $Tree shower poof to get mesh tubes for storing onions and garlic. Put a knot or rubber band between each bulb.

Thank you so much for a complete and self-educating video!!! I went to utilize my local food bank and surprisingly, they had an abundance of Garlic, still in bulbs and dry! So I asked how many bulbs can I have and the helpful woman said, "YOU CAN TAKE IT ALL!" So I did, and I brought home approximately a full shopping bag of vegetables I can't live without! I'm Italian/Canadian so I've been consuming Garlic since I was old enough to chew! My mom used it in most dishes but we use it a lot when preparing Spaghetti Sauce. So Thank You for teaching me the proper way of storing Garlic, by the way, should I store onions and shallots the same way? Take Care!

I keep mine in an open pantry on a bottom shelf in a vented hard plastic container lines with a sheet of parchment paper and they don’t last longer than about 1-2 months. I wish I knew how to make them last long...but maybe the store bought ones don’t last as long?

We store a lot of fruits and vegetables in our “fruit room” which stays around 55-65 degrees. We also store in our garage which never gets above 65 degrees in the summer or below 40 degrees in our cold winter months, (outside temperatures are 0-20 degrees in the winter).

I'm surprised you remove the soil. I read that root vegetables, and one would assume herbs too, you leave the soil on and put it in a root cellar. If I am not mistaken, root cellars retain coolness because the dirt insulates. Most people keep their homes at least 70 degrees, so I am not sure how well putting it in a cupboard would work? It would seem to me that a root cellar would work better, unless it is too humid. Not all basements are humid, so if you have a cool dry basement, braiding and hanging the garlic in that environment (as long as it is cool enough) should work. Some say the temperatures should be cooler than what you are suggesting. I would say the best bet is to research how it used to be done before we had electricity to keep our homes cool. "Keep your garlic in a dark, cool place (32 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit) where it will still get some air circulation. Braiding and hanging garlic is a good way to store it. However, don’t hang it in the kitchen where it will be exposed to light. You can also store garlic in a mesh bag."

Thanks, I was thinking my refrigerator wasn't keeping my garlic their best, but as for a kitchen closet, are there other things we shouldn't store with garlic, I know potatoes don't go well with onions, do they go well with garlic???

@@anonomyssymymy5115 It there something different about the store bought ones that make them less resilient? Mine don’t last more than 2 months max. They will either dry up or turn brown in spots and I store them as she recommends.

@@sierrajones4681 store bought garlic is already old when you buy it. Much of it is from China. If you’re not growing your own, only buy enough for a week or two. Growing it is fun and pretty easy.
