I am Moroccan from the Alawi family. I know the history of my ancestors, with its pros and cons, by heart. Most of what Western historians (and those influenced by them) claim about Moulay Ismail are mere allegations based on zero evidences!! But here; we still keep historical documents that show the truth that many people don't like. Although I personally do not care about all these lies. Anyway I will give you some real details. Moulay Ismail himself was a black man, his mother was a black woman who was enslaved before he was born. In his quest to unify Morocco, the first thing he did was to prevent Moroccans from owning or trading black slaves. he was offering the tribes to give up their slaves in exchange for money, or in exchange for the blade of his sword on their necks. when he liberated all the black slaves, he gave them their freedoms and made them a mighty and loyal army. Some of them were also given important positions in the state... The reason Western historians hate Moulay Ismail is because at the time he liberated black slaves in Morocco and West Africa in general, he was enslaving Europeans who fell into captivity. In fact, he only treated them the same, because the black Muslims in southern Morocco were complaining continuously to him about the European attacks on them by killing and kidnapping children and youth and selling them as slaves in the Americas... anyway, you can believe what you please.. we don't give a s..t 🤭

Yep. People do genuinely love the king over here. Pictures on official buildings are of course part of some protocol, but many people would put them themselves anyway. Some Europeans may think of it as a sign of dictatorship, but it's not like that at all. Well, you could argue that Morocco is a dictatorship, but King pictures aren't part of it.

Considering the narrator, Jack, is of Western descent, I think he did a great job. Some Arabic names/words are difficult to pronounce. I was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq 4 times, I picked up a lot of the language. Im fluent in German, Spanish, English (native), and Italian. Arabic is difficult, but also super enjoyable to learn.

I don't know if you are looking for Latin American themes, but one that might be interesting is the quatrocentonas families of brazil (a sort of colonial elite that in some cases are still important to this day).

The quatrocentonas families are interesting because they have been a part of Brazil's history for 400 to 500 years (quatrocentonas literally means "having four hundred"), not because they are particularly associated with Europe, in fact, they are in most cases of mixed ancestry just because they have been here for so long, and less European (whatever that means) than recent turn of the 19th century immigrants. Most Latin Americans have nothing to do with Europe, but an interesting part of the history of the quatrocentonas families is how they reacted to European immigrants in the 1900s, particularly the ones that became nouveaux riches (a typical strategy was intermarriage to integrate them in the traditional elite, and there are many famous such cases the most recognizable one being the marriage of Maysa Monjardim into the Matarazzo family of Italian origin).

If you ever do happen to come here, or just look demographic data and read about Latin America, you'll see. Either way, I do agree that culturally the Iberian influence was predominant, but other influences both African and native were much stronger here than in the English-speaking countries. Regardless, culture and ancestry are two different thing, as I'm sure you are aware, not everyone sharing the same culture, language etc necessarily shares the exact same ancestry (neither do people with the same ancestry necessarily share the same culture). Also, not every massive cultural change is due to complete demographic replacement (one great example of that is North Africa, but most of Latin America also works). The descendents of those late 19th century immigrants in Latin America, for example, are pretty much indistinguishable from other locals now even when their ancestry is all of relatively recent migration.

I am sure that "Aabid" means slaves, wether they are black or white. And black people in common, we call them "Zunuj", and I think -from my readings- that it is refers to a legendary greatest-grandfather of them. Also, call them "Sudan", before the country took the name. For non-african blacks we call them "Sumr". And we still use these words, until now. In Arabic and Islamic history, you will read about so much white and black slaves, and so much white and black free people. For example, In early "Ummayah of Damascus" years, persians were most of the slaves. In "Abbasid" and "Ummayah of Andalus", Slavics and Turks were most of the slaves. In the years of Crusade wars, Ciracassians and Zunuj were most of the slaves come from. And so on.

We actually call him Mulay Ismail. My husband is Native to Meknes. His father is a retired government architect and told me Mulay Ismail used to burry alive anyone that went against him into the city walls that are still up today. Everytime I pass one of those walls I can just image all the skeletons we would find if we did xray on them. He also hired pirates (Pirates de Barbarie) to kidnap noble Europeans who traveled on the Mediterranean sea, held them for ransom tqo fund Mulay Ismail's empire.

No no, it's not a mistake. Abd al Hafid is a common name in Morocco meaning The Worshipper of the Protector (here the All-Protector/All-Preserver is Hafid in Arabic حفيظ and it is one of God's 99 holy names). A lot of Moroccan names start with Abd عبد as in Worshipper + God's name (e.g. Abdu [A]l [A] llah, Abdu [A]l Wahid, Abdu [A]l Rezzaq..)

Because it is not and has never been part of Morocco. The Sahrawi people have no connection to Morocco, they speak a different dialect, have different tribes, have their own traditional dress, food and customs. It seems rather odd that Morocco accepted to share the Western Sahara with Mauritania, but then the latter withdrew and left Morocco in the mess that will never end.

@@lionedas22686 It's about the history as well. I teach history and Western Sahara was not part of Morocco. It's people are a lot closer to Mauritania than Morocco in every aspect. Mauritania and Morocco were once united by Ibn Tishfine into one state, but this does not mean that Mauritania was part of Morocco, or vice versa.

Sultan come from the name 'Sulta' which mean authority in Arabic. So king is more modern and more likely to be accepted by the international community.

It's because the state institutions were modernized and also because Sultan is an équivalent for Emperor. Al-Malik is the équivalent of King in arabic. Since Morocco isn't an empire anymore it became a Kingdom.

Hazrat Syed Shah Qabool (R.A) was a Muslim Sufi Saint, who came from Arab & spread the light of Islam, in those areas of then Sub-continent of India, which are now included in territory of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. He belongs to “SILSILA-E-QADIRIA “(a branch of Muslim Spiritual Sufism). Early Life: Hazrat Syed Shah Qabool (R.A) was born in 1101 A.D (1689 B.C). in “Teenjah” a small town / port of Morocco. The name of his father was Hazrat Syed Shah Abdullah, who was from branch of Hazrat Syed Abdul Razzaq (R.A), the 4th son of “Sultan-ul-Aulia”, Ghous-e-Pak, Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani (R.A) of Baghdad, (IRAQ). He was admitted in “maktab” (muslim religious school), when he was only 4years & 4 months old, the age when mostly children like to play. He always used to think about the world & creator of world i-e ALLAH. After obtaining the islamic education through books, he started to obtain inner knowledge, which is the way to reach the Almighty ALLAH. He was succeeded in his goal, but want to learn more & more & also to serve the mankind. In very young age, he asked the father to allow him to leave the country for seeking knowledge / education & serving the human being. The loving father permitted him to leave the town / country in search of invisible facts / secrets about relations of man & ALLAH i-e ‘TASAWWAF’. He left the town as well loving parents & relatives, in search of love & blessings of Almighty ALLAH. In those days, the travelling by sea was not so comfortable, but with full blessings / prayers & loves of his parents, he started voyage towards India (the sub-continent).

I’m amazed of the informations you have about our beloved dynasty Alaouite ! Let me add something : The French protectorat was a punishment from France because late king Mohamed V was against France colonisation of Algeria, actually the Sahara of the est is historically Moroccan, but as a punishment France took it from us to give it to Algeria (since Algeria was considered by French people at the time as a French département 😒 that means that they took all the Moroccan sahara of east + protectorat over Morocco ) during all history of the different dynasties having ruled Morocco, we were know to be very strong and ruling all North of Africa and Andalousia and some of France till Poitier, the queen of Spain at the time wrote in her last lettre : be careful of Moroccans don’t ever let them breath always create problems for them because otherwise we will lose our territories, and religion if they stay strong they will rule all Europe …” Something like that. To go back to Algeria, we were helping them militarily and even fighting with them, which France didn’t like ! Unfortunately today, Algerians are denying everything and feeling so much jealousy of our growth … I was talking about Moroccan sahara in the east (given by France to Algeria as a punishment for us) but there is also the Sahara in the south of Morocco where they have been bothering us to take it from us, Polisario is a terrorist group created by France/ And its servant Algeria to try to decide us Moroccans, thanks to our beloved King Mohamed VI, USA AND Israel have recognised it as Moroccan lands in décembre 2020, which Europe didn’t like off course because they can not forget the Spanish queen lettre and our history with them. We helped France against Nazism, we helped her on the war field during world war to have its indépendance,but hey like Algerians they still want us to be devdied, fear is an obsession . Also Algerian gov is submitted to France, France using Africa ressources for its own economy sake till today, Morocco is the only one who keeps standing straight ! The rumours you heard from France about our father the king, are propaganda off course Oh also, late Hassan II is considered as our father to us all Moroccans, we absolutely love him and our parents generation too, he wasn’t that harsh from the start, only when some traiters working for France were trying to kill him that he became harsh, but we love him soooo much and we are glad he overcame by the help of Allah, the 27 attempts to kill him

If you are going to mention Ceuta and Melilla as part of a legacy of Spain and Portugal taking advance of the divisions between Moroccans, perhaps you should consider that both cities have been part either for Portugal or Spain since 1415 and 1497, pretty much at the time of the Iberian reconquista. Therefore Ceuta and Melilla belongs to a different legacy.

Minor corrections, the name Alaouites refer more to their founder Molay Ali Cherif rather than Ali ibn Talib, the same as the Idrissides dynasty in Morocco refers to Idriss I the founder of "modern" Morocco although they allegedly trace their lineage to Mohammed too. Also, Abid Al Bukhari (The Black Guard) was formed only of black slaves and the freedmen you alluded to were Hartinis that were black slaves that had been freed and he re-slaved them which caused a massive revolt in Morocco as it was deemed unIslamic. Also, a little timeline mixup that can lead to false interpretations is that the 2 failed military coups led to the years of led and not the other way around :) Lastely, it would have been fun if you expended more in the rule of Moulay Abdelaziz
