About MLB.com: Former Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig announced on January 19, 2000, that the 30 Major League Club owners voted unanimously to centralize all of Baseball's Internet operations into an independent technology company. Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) was formed and charged with developing, building and managing the most comprehensive baseball experience available on the Internet. In August 2002, MLB.com streamed the first-ever live full length MLB game over the Internet when the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees faced off at Yankee Stadium. Since that time, millions of baseball fans around the world have subscribed to MLB.TV, the live video streaming product that airs every game in HD to nearly 400 different devices. MLB.com also provides an array of mobile apps for fans to choose from, including At Bat, the highest-grossing iOS sports app of all-time. MLB.com also provides fans with a stable of Club beat reporters and award-winning national columnists, the largest contingent of baseball reporters under one roof, that deliver over 100 original articles every day. MLB.com also offers extensive historical information and footage, online ticket sales, official baseball merchandise, authenticated memorabilia and collectibles and fantasy games.
Major League Baseball consists of 30 teams split between the American and National Leagues. The American League consists of the following teams: Baltimore Orioles; Boston Red Sox; Chicago White Sox; Cleveland Indians; Detroit Tigers; Houston Astros; Kansas City Royals; Los Angeles Angels ; Minnesota Twins; New York Yankees; Oakland Athletics; Seattle Mariners; Tampa Bay Rays; Texas Rangers; and Toronto Blue Jays. The National League, originally founded in 1876, consists of the following teams: Arizona Diamondbacks; Atlanta Braves; Chicago Cubs; Cincinnati Reds; Colorado Rockies; Los Angeles Dodgers; Miami Marlins; Milwaukee Brewers; New York Mets; Philadelphia Phillies; Pittsburgh Pirates; San Diego Padres; San Francisco Giants; St. Louis Cardinals; and Washington Nationals.

I’m a Japanese baseball fan more importantly, Shohei fan! He might look little motivated, but he is very motivated person in fact! Otherwise, it was never possible to achieve such great figures he had in Japanese baseball. As other guy says, he just doesn’t express himself so much, which is Japanese virtues. I’m sad he’s leaving Japan, but it means his dream is coming true. MLB fans in the US, please take good care of him!! Thanks!!

To really know what a person who speaks foreign language is truly saying or feeling. You got listen to their tone of their voices, see their personality and understanding where the person is coming from (conversational wise). Both the translator and Morosi did an outstanding job doing all these I've listed above. My respects for those guys for taking their talking with Shohei Ohtani. Keep up the good work Shohei and welcome to the Major League Baseball (MLB)!!!

The way this interviewer gave questions to Ohtani is amazing . I haven't seen he answered in such pleasure mood because he doesn't like to take many questions from a media. He also told the person more detailed about the answer, though he usually doesn't do so.

In Japanese, to be both hitter and pitcher is called Nito-ryu (a double -swords samurai). That's cool expression, I think. If it doesn't exist that phrase in American English, Ohtani should become a noun in that meaning.

Cultural differences between Japan and America. In Japan, to confess personal ambitions is very shameful. In this interview, he refused to tel his parent's names and he said to Japanese translator, "it's a shame, isn't it?" in Japanese, in not translated words. Because he feels it's his very personal thing. In America, to declare his own goal is a sincere thing. But, Ohtani answered in the very Japanese way. But, it doesn't mean that he had not any ambitions in MLB career. Or raher, he must have visions of career in MLB, pitching and bating, champion ring...etc. I'm a Japanese and baseball fan, above all, Ohtani's fan. Because, he is the monster player in Japanese baseball history : 103 mile pitch and powerful batting. But I don't know his personal thoughts and emotions. He didn't say such things in mass medias. I hope him to say more things about his personal things in the very "American" way in America. Anyway, this interviewer is great! Thanks and respects to Mr. Morosi.

Horapollo As an American baseball fan and Ohtani fan, watching this interview made me an even bigger fan of his. I didn’t get the impression that he didn’t have personal ambitions or wasn’t motivated. To me, his expressions and mannerisms stood out in a good way. I don’t know any Japanese, but watching him interact with the interviewer he just seemed very thoughtful (pausing while speaking, looking up at the ceiling, etc.) patient (One imagines that having to answer all these big, media hyped questions is very exhausting, especially when you have to trust that the translator is communicating for you well) good natured (laughing) and considerate (eye contact, nodding, smiling, etc.). I’m assuming that certain nonverbal forms of communication can be understood universally, but I suppose it’s possible that some of these mannerisms mean/signify much different things among Japanese speakers than they do among english speakers. As for his responses, I thought they reinforced his mannerisms. Thoughtful, patient, kind. Intelligent and mature. More than anything else, though, his answers seemed extremely, extremely humble. There was a humility in his response about Babe Ruth, his admiration of Ichiro, his praise for his fellow Japanese League baseball players, his slight self-deprecating, and his very honest, realistic response regarding feeling nervous about how his talent will stack up against players in the MLB. It was actually really refreshing, endearing, and insightful to see/hear a professional athlete of his stature be so humble/thoughtful while answering. I tend to get very bored with most player interviews here in the states, as the responses - while sometimes mildly amusing - are almost always cliched, recycled, void of any real insight as to how the player thinks or what type of person/character that player is/has. After watching this interview, I felt like I actually got to know him in some small but meaningful way. Then again I could be 100% wrong. For now, I can at least hope I understood his responses correctly.

Great analysis - ya it's such a difference when it comes to personal right, freedom, and ambition in Japan. Japanese culture enforces certain group behaviours very similar to tall poppy syndrome in Australia and Jante Law in Dennmark. They both criticise individual success and achievement as unworthy and inappropriate. That's why in NA, there are many startups and high achievers whereas in Japan and europe, people tend to strive to be ordinary. I've been living in NA for 8 years.

Bro Jackson: I really liked your analysis/comment. I had the same impression as a Japanese who lived in US for >10 years. I was also impressed by his thoughtful and extremely humble answers even in Japanese standards. But I also agree that he must have ambitions because who can become an exceptional player without it! Given his age, he seems very mature and honest. Your comments made me happy as a baseball fan!

"he said to Japanese translator, "it's a shame, isn't it?" in Japanese" The adjective "恥ずかしい" in Japanese means both shy and shameful but I think in this context it is more like shy than shameful. I would translate it "it'd be embarrassing, wouldn't it?" As to him not wanting to talk about his ambitions, it's more of his preference to be humble than anything else though I have to admit being humble is a part of cultural values.

As far as speaking is concerned, Japanese is much either than English, I think. But when it comes to writing, it may be a horrible language. Three different groups of characters are used together in sentences. The Japanese and Chinese languages are completely different and the Japanese language may be very much different from the other Asian languages. I think many Asians want to speak Japanese.

Great interview , overall the translation was pretty good but there were just few areas that missed the subtle nuance . little things (Choice of words makes a big difference) I really liked the interviewer. E.g “what do you want people to know about Shohei , how much you love baseball “ was translated to Shohei as what kind of person are you . Shohei in all interviews has hard time taking about himself as a person vs what kind of player he is. So in the answer he said “ it’s hard … and had to pose for a min ) BUT his answer was perfect ( I’m just nit picking I know and Nobody probably cares or read my comment anyway lol )
