So the little white push-in clips that hold the outer portion of the black trim piece that is above the tail light, are not designed to pop back out of the little whole they pop into. The clips have little 'wings' that expand once the clip is fully pushed in. However, the back part of the white plastic clips are designed to slip out of the black trim housing, leaving the white clips still 'clipped' into the van.(Hard to understand through an explanation I know.) Once you slid the black housing off the white clips, you can then get to the back side of the white clips with a pair of needle nose pliers and squeeze the little 'wings' of the clip together, so that you can then remove them from the hole that they are snapped into. On reassembly, slid the clips back into the black housing while off the vehicle, then you can position the black trim piece where it belongs and with the palm of your hand gentle hit the top and bottom of the black plastic trim piece to pop those clips back into the hole in the van. (there is actually a metal bar that bolted to the van that has the holes in it, that the white clips are designed to pop into.) (In this video, just as he pulls the black trim piece off, you can briefly see the metal bar with two holes in where the clips go at the 37 sec mark.)

We should dox the "engineer" who designed this - absolutely ridiculous. For the future, I put the concealed nut back on without putting the tab for the light assembly behind it. The tab fits over the washer-nut pretty well. Then I put the tab for the upper trim piece on behind the light assembly tab so it won't have to be removed again to change the bulb.

I have a 2020 GMC Savana. After removing the nut on the black piece it still woul not come off. Looks like something else is holding it on. Any ideas ?
