Pride and ego in university teachers does not allow them to reach out and actually teach. They just read or repeat a text book, no digesting and processing.

Thank you so much for the simplicity expressed in this series of yours from parts 1 - 3. I was able to comprehend at a faster rate and I'm sure this will get to stick more compared to reading from textbooks and lecture rooms. However, I have a few questions to ask in which I would be glad if I receive simplicity in explanations. 1. What are morphs? 2. Differences between morph and morpheme with instances or examples 3. 'All prefixes in English are derivational morphemes, but not all derivational morphemes in English are prefixes' can you please explain more on this, with examples Thank you once again, sir, await your speed answer..
@evanashworth4903 жыл бұрын
Hello! In answering your questions: 1 and 2) Morphs are phonetically realized forms of morphemes. Morphemes only exist in the abstract, as a psychological reality (think of the meaning of the "plural" morpheme, for example), but a morph is an actual pronunciation of that morpheme (e.g., the [z] in "dogs" vs. the [s] in "cats". However, the morph that is used is often determined by phonological environments (the surrounding sounds), so they are often competing against other morphs in the set, or "allomorphs", so "morphs" son't really get discussed that much in linguistics. 3) Any prefix in English is a derivational morpheme (e.g., the "pre" in "prefix" helps to create a new word and changes the lexical category from verb ("fix") to noun (prefix). However, there are other derivational morphemes in English, but they don't have to be prefixes. One example is the "al" in "national". This suffix is derivational because it creates a new word (nation vs national) and changes the lexical category from noun (nation) to an adjective (national). I hope that helps!
