*Lyrics* As Vesta was from Latmos hill descending She spied a maiden Queen the same ascending Attended on by all the shepherds' swain To whom Diana's darlings came running down amain First two by two, then three by three together Leaving their goddess all alone hasted thither; And mingling with the shepherds of her train With mirthful tunes her presence entertain Then sang the shepherds and nymphs of Diana Long live fair Oriana!

Very different, but amazing. I love how when they're singing "Descending" their voices are getting lower, "ascending" their voices are going higher and when they're singing "two by two" two people are singing, "three by three" three people are singing and "together" all of them are singing. Very clever! Love this! :)

I listened this for my Intro to Western Music class and thats what composers did in that era. When madrigals developed composers utilized "word-painting" and made the music "sound" like the words

Writing this so I remember for my test. Weelkes uses word painting throughout this piece. For example, the words “descending” and “running down” inspired a plunging leap or falling, scale-like melody; “ascending” is accompanied by a rising line. Sometimes the text literally prompts the musical response.
