@@teresawalters6358 I've been to many hundreds of gigs over the last three decades, and in general, I love it when the audience is involved and invested in the artist. I saw Morrissey live numerous times in the 90's and 00's and the audiences tended to be gloriously wild, but what doesn't work is whooping and screaming when the man is performing a song as emotionally charged and fragile as Asleep, one which needs to be heard and felt, not drowned out by inane noise. It's like throwing a blanket over a great piece of art when other people are trying to take it in. You must host quite the party, by the way, if they consist of whooping along to suicide songs.

@@jam-nc8ut same thing happened to Elliott Smith after he got famous. God and Radiohead. Can’t tell you how many times Exit Music, or How To Disappear, or Videotape was ruined by idiots wooing and singing along - usually a little out of key and out of time. Pre - fame thom would’ve stopped and had words. I saw him do it twice actually - once during “street spirit” on the bends tour and once during “no surprises” on the OKC tour. Elliott Smith didn’t seem to mind but Jesus Christ.

Sometimes I think Morrissey's physiognomy on stage reflects this immense disrespect from the audience. Scream like a maniac during "Asleep" is like laugh towards Mozart's Lacrimosa. But anyway ... People are the same everywhere.

My daddy was so physically sick. He just wanted to go to a better world. He hugged and kissed me. Told me I was his lil sweetheart and died of complications from cancer 6 hours later. I know this is a song about suicide, but my dad was ready to meet his Maker and that’s how I choose to think about this song. He’s no longer sick and with the Lord and his family. He’s finally whole again.

@@somekidwithacomputer2939 ....I'm not sure people sit down and write lyrics about nothing. They obviously meant something to Morrissey when he wrote them. The beauty of good lyrics though is they mean different things to different people. To you it's just a sad song but to me it reminded me of my Gran who died a year before the album was released. She'd lived her life and had been house bound for quite a while and been without my Grandad for 18 years. In her latter years she told me she was ready to go. In my early twenties I found it difficult to comprehend that feeling, it felt alien to me and so sad. Perhaps I'll never fully understand it because in my 60's now I still love life so much, but as I've got older I understand her words more. The song's lyrics capture how she felt I guess, or how I perceived her thoughts looking back.

When he died my daughter, who knew I liked the Smiths played this for the family gathering and during the whole period. This song captured the moment so much it was scary. I still sometimes listen to it but it is still hard. Miss you dad.....RIP
