Well when it came out on the album it caught some of us off guard. When it was played live around 2002ish the tempo was faster.

I think he IS lamenting those people, but nobody else is. He's still there and what's he doing? Lamenting the educated criminals, and crashing bores. I think he's being sarcastic when he says 'I must be one' because he regards those (who never took him in their arms and loved him) as the crashing bores, but the crashing bores think he's a crashing bore ... etc.

I have always absolutely loved the smiths’s music and a lot of morrisey’s solo stuff but he’s become the bore in the last decade or so.
