Regarding subtitles, most players read them faster than they can listen to the voice over, and they simply skip the voice acting. Test yourself - with an 80% probability, after just an hour of playing, you will read subtitles faster than you listen) So statements about “mountains of texts” from NPCs are just excuses for a small part of the players. But if I write you a giant essay size response you’re most likely either not going to read it or skim through it. It’s the whole tldr thing we have in today’s society. While fundamentally yes, Morrowind deserved a remake sooner, Oblivion needed one. Oblivion is currently the only mainline TES game (sans Arena) without a stable, 64 bit engine. Daggerfall has Daggerfall Unity, Morrowind has Open Morrowind, and Skyrim has Skyrim Special Edition. Meanwhile, Oblivion is stuck with the crashtastic original 32-bit engine.

I'm going to date myself somewhat here, but Morrowind was the game of my childhood. The scope of the game and the options I had in playing blew my mind at the time and introduced me to rpg style games. The fact that I had to learn skills to advance in personal and professional survivability and progression had never hit the same as other games did in quite the same way. The idea that you could just conplete the tutorial in under 5 minutes and be placed in the world to figure stuff out and make your own story of it (i believe) has never really been replicated since. The story of Tamriel in general and Morrowind in particular also fascinated me as the alien nature of the landscape and the internal and external politics of the time,region, and era captured my imagination in a way that other games didn't. My point is that Morrowind is an excellent game, but it can be easy to bounce off of if you didnt grow up with it and the type of game that required active engagement.

Honestly, I don't think Morrowind needs a remake more than Oblivion does. When I was young I didn't like to read now I do, so I'm pretty sure those young gamers will grow over that in time. Elden Ring has proven you don't need map makers and a cluttered UI to "help" players find their way. Mods help a lot with how the game looks. And since Morrowind seems to run better than Oblivion on modern systems despite the fact it's older, I think that proves Oblivion is in a bigger need for a remake than Morrowind is.
@AVVGaming13 күн бұрын
That’s amazing that it runs better than Oblvion! I think it’s more for console players I was thinking of. I just feel like it’s crazy that they will remake the others and Leave Morrowind but at the end of the day, oblivion is the easier of the two to redo and it will have more of a guarantee in terms of revenue. Plus if they bring it back, Morrowind, and it changes a lot it could ruin its legacy. Just wish some gamers had the chance to experience it and see why Bethesda has struggled to match those standards

I just reinstalled Morrowind and updated it with the OpenMW engine and over one hundred mods this weekend. I haven't played it since the early 2000s. At the end of the first day in the game, a patrolling guard wandered up to me with a lit torch out. "Best go inside for the night. Only dark deeds happen after dark, outlander," he said. And I realized he had a point. The stores were closed and locked, and I had no fast travel to pass the time to the next day. I NEVER sleep in Skyrim or Oblivion unless I need to, but this dialog made me realize that I actually wanted to. It made me feel immersed. But I didn't have enough gold for a room. So I wandered into the nearest Mages Guild hall, joined the guild, and found an empty bunk in the common area. Now I have a whole new questline and a deeper connection to a faction within the game. All because a guard realistically told me to get some sleep and I couldn't fast travel. It's such a small but important detail that makes the world of Morrowind feel so much more alive.

Bethesda was not a small studio. She was big + publisher. The success of Morrowind saved them from the debt trap. Actually, Bethesda founded Zenimax because they, like Bethesda, were no longer lending money. And in another name with a clean credit history you could get more money. On the contrary, during the development of Morrowind, the team size shrank.
@TheVoitel2 күн бұрын
I don’t think that would be reasonable. What Oblivion is rumored to get is not as much a remake of the game, but a modernisation of the engine. And this is quite relevant, as Oblivion’s engine does have technical limitations that show especially once you start modding the game. Now, Morrowind tends to be overglorified due to nostalgia, but we need to keep in mind how much changed with Oblivion, especially on the technical and mechanical side, but also on the general quality of assets. The difference between Oblivion and modern games is by far smaller than the difference between Morrowind and Oblivion. Add microtransactions to Oblivion and you essentially have a modern game (in terms of game mechanics). This might constitute to a reason why Morrowind would deserve a remake, but it also means that Morrowind does need much more than just a modernisation of the engine. Now, even then it is going to be hard to get the original Morrowind engine to anything useful, so essentially you’d need to recreate the engine. And if you want that, this has been done in the open source project OpenMW (and this is feasible as Morrowind is quite a simplistic game from a mechanical standpoint, with Oblivion this would be much harder). But then you’d still be left with the same issues you have brought up. The game would require recreation of all assets (which also includes design and world design), voice acting and stuff. And then you’ll probably need to incorporate more modern mechanics to appeal to new players. But then this is going to piss off old players. And then you would have the problem that Morrowind is actually quite small. The perceived size of Morrowind comes from the technical limitation of view distance, having no fast travel and the slow movement speed (you know, Morrowind was the game where you could not keep running). So when you take this to a more modern style Morrowind is going to fell quite small. So you’d really need to make things larger and stuff. So all in all, Morrowind would essentially require a complete recreation of the game, which is going to take a very much larger budget than this rumored Oblivion remake would take. Because Morrowind was a great game. But it was a great game in 2002. Some 4 years later Morrowind was already a not so great game that people loved because it was great back in the time.

I do think thay add RTGI but it will probebly be at a bigger preformance cost then Lumen with worse quality (TES 6 will probebly look like a cross Xbox one/Series X game and come out on nextgen)

Morrowind is my favorite game of all time, but I can't imagine Bethesda remaking it. Mod community is still very much active and besides many graphical mods that improve how Morrowind looks while still keeping its atmosphere, Rebirth mod that makes it more polished and finished, there's also Tamriel Rebuild & Project Tamriel that I'm more excited for than anything Bethesda would make. I trust modders more to maintain the original lore and atmosphere, even expand on it.

I think the main reason why an Oblivion remake makes a bit more sense than Morrowind to me is that Oblivion has a more appeal to newer gamers. If the rumors turn out to be true, it could possibly be testing the remake waters with an easier to get into game. If an Oblivion remake does come out and it does well, I don't think a Morrowind remake is unlikely. This is the studio that released Skyrim 4 times.

Very few people who didn’t play Morrowind before would hate the idea of dice rolls to hit in a 3d first person fighting game. I personally would love a Morrowind remake but I am willing to admit that I would be the exception when it comes to meeting games half way with their mechanics. Most of my peers need a constant dripfeed of dopamine in games and the combat and exploration in Morrowind doesn’t give that until much later in the game if at all depending on your build
@OverlordRosenburg3 күн бұрын
Morrowind will take a lot more effort to remake than Oblivion. Most of the game systems will have to be fully redone which means Bathesda has to commit to the game with a larger team for a longer period of time. They just don't want to commit because the ROI wasn't good enough. Maybe if the oblivion remake sells well they'll consider.
@AVVGaming13 күн бұрын
I think money talks and they would assume oblvion is the safer bet of the games they have released. It would probably do very well. I still think Morrowind would outsell it though because there’s more new elements to it. Not many fans of Skyrim have had the chance to play it.

My FPS RPG gaming on PC goes back to Ultima Underworld and I still play that!. I remember when Morrowind first came out and how insanely awesome it was. I still play it now although through OpenMW and heavily modded graphically. It 100% deserves a remake. If they kept the gameplay elements and UI as close to the original as possible but added voiced NPC's I'd pay good money for that.
@peregrination36433 күн бұрын
I think Todd Howard made a comment once about how they were afraid to remake Morrowind because too much of what's loved about it is tied to the time it was made. You modernize parts of it, and many fans won't accept it. It's something of a "pure" game, flaws and all. It has too specific of a feel.
@adam-xi2ncКүн бұрын
If I remember correctly this has always been a conversation point within the community, short answer no long answer yes it definitely should. Morrowind is absolutely massive with a lot of "dialogue" that has to be voiced for a proper remaster. That alone would probably be double the size of the game alone. You could say use AI to speed up the recording process but that even has its limitations. A lot of the dialogue could be cut to reduce size but then it will be another oblivion with only two speech options. The work to accomplish the project wouldn't be worth the profit. There's a lot more on why it's not commercially feasible but it really is something that needs to happen. We need a dedicated team that loves this game and everything about it to be able to recreate even a resemblance of what Morrowind truly is.
@filidhdeklend8932 күн бұрын
I'd agree, but Morrowind wasn't Todd Howard's game. People pushed back against him and snuck a lot of the choices we had into the game because Todd just wanted to run around as a jock barbarian smashing everything. Oblivion is the game where Todd got full control, and look, it's a game that's mostly just running around as a jock barbarian smashing everything.

I don't think it's possible to remake Morrowind commercially. It is a PC game, an old-school-ish RPG and it's more of an open world with RPG-mechanics, ruleset and stories on top. Converting it into the modern, first person skill based action adventure that people now expect would lead to ludicrous compromises. It's just not compatible.

Morrowind doesn't need a remake because it is great as it is, and it is already better at many things than later games. And it already has such great mod projects as Tamriel Rebuilt and Project Tamriel. To wish for a remake is pure ignorance.
@LindrosPetri2 күн бұрын
I don’t understand the constant need for remakes especially when remake means a few quality of life improvements and better graphics. Any remake of Morrowind will not be better than what you can already achieve via OpenMW and mods. If it is a remake adding NPC schedules and Radiant AI, for example, that would be amazing, however, the chance they would ever do such a thing is very low because it is hard. I simply do not understand this need for remakes. It feels like it is hype created by companies so that gamers give more money to them for a few scraps of improvements.

This is my favorite TES game. I'm not sure how I feel about it being remade. Today the systems are so outdated that to get younger players interested you'd need to throw out nearly all of it, which in my mind is what makes the game special. We're getting Skywind (hopefully) in a few years and it should allow people who can't get into Morrowind's outdate mechanics a chance to experience the world and story (as long as they have a PC). I certianly wouldn't turn down a remake, but I think the resources could be better spend elsewhere (admittedly I feel the same about the Oblivion and rumored Fallout remakes/remasters).
@AVVGaming13 күн бұрын
Yeah I think it’s just a shame some haven’t had the chance to experience it! I know a few of them myself and it’s sad to know they can’t get into it nowadays. But like you said, maybe the past is better in the past rather than bringing it back and ruining its legacy.
@ClellBiggs3 күн бұрын
@AVVGaming1 I should be clear that I don't disagree about it needing a redo more than Oblivion. They clearly went with Oblivion because they thought it would be easier. But for me either of them being remade is... fine. I neither wanted it nor did I not want it. I hope it turns out well.

As Ubisoft designers noted when looking at Elden Ring: “My life was a lie - everything I knew about Ui/ux and the convenience of players turned out to be unnecessary for the players - since Elden Ring was given the game of the year.” If you add markers to the Morrowind remake, it will take away the charm of the game.
@AVVGaming13 күн бұрын
@@YarGolubev yes I’m not necessarily saying they should add that, but I wanted to explain how it puts new players off. Like I love KCD and many games that don’t have markers and let you figure it out. It’s more memorable. But some people don’t like that. They want to be told where to go as it’s less time consuming. What they would probably y need to do is meet in the middle. Some guides but leave a lot for players to find out themselves.
@march84822 күн бұрын
Do people REALLY love Elden Ring or is it just a hype? I think it is the most overrated game at this moment. Enemy variety isn't great, the world is kinda stale (imo), the horse makes the game easy, etc. I love Dark Souls, but man, I just cannot get into this game.
@PoeLemic2 күн бұрын
@AVVGaming1 Have the map-marker feature where you can turn it off or on. For me, I'd prefer it, but not where it shows me exactly where it is -- but where it hints at the region. Then, it becomes a map-marker after I have discovered it.

Morrowind's mechanics made the game. No modern remake would respect them.
@lanelesic2 күн бұрын
I disagree. There should never be a Morrowind remake or remaster or anything. Its great the way it is. Before you say a remake would bring Morrowind to the new generations of players that cannot read, and cannot grasp the concept of hit chance and damage formulae in a RPG, by making a remake in style of "modern audience" games the core of what Morrowind is would be ruined. Best decision Todd ever made is to veto any such attempts, as the result could be some rollslop like Elden ring or even worse some sony template non-game like Horizon zero one two, or even worse some Ass creed or baldurs gate tier abomination against mankind.

This is probably a long off conspiracy theory but I'll throw it out here anyways. Based on the systems we know they are reworking: hit registration, blocking, sneak, archery, HUD, and fatigue, that sounds an awful lot to me like the things in Morrowind that needed the biggest rework for a modern audience, not oblivion. Oblivion's blocking, sneak, archery, hit registration, and fatigue effects had minimal rework between oblivion and skyrim, but they all were massively changed between morrowind and oblivion. My bold prediction is we're getting a bait and switch morrowind remake, NOT, oblivion... but maybe I'm huffing too much hopium.
