4:20 I think about Morrowind surprisingly often, mostly because of the bitter irony of its existence. Morrowind wasn't afraid to show its bones, its technical limitations, but also the zaniness that can come from digital gaming. It promised a bright future, and provided a fun if flawed experience. The level of attention to detail that you can find in Morrowind is greater than that of any other Bethesda RPG that I can recall, however. Oblivion automated too much and had too small of a budget, losing those details in the process. Skyrim optimized and streamlined everything, leading to plenty of cool details still existing, but most of Skyrim feels like a game while many of Morrowind's towns feel somewhat more lived-in. Between the Elder Scrolls games and the Fallout series, the bright future that I expected from gaming seems to have fizzled out. It's a little depressing, though Oblivion and Skyrim are still great games for their respective times. It's just weird to see technology leap further and further ahead while the gameplay mechanics and storytelling aspect of video games remain relatively stale.

Agreed. Video games these days are trying to be cheap imitations of films more than games. The entire reason gaming exists, its interactivity, has become unpopular. I would rather watch a proper film any day than one of these modern movie games. My friend accuses me of playing the same games for 20 years, well that's why. Modern games aren't even games.

@@theFORZA66See, I agree and disagree. This isn't a Golden Age. That has come and passed. We are experiencing a great renaissance. Even people who don't enjoy those games respect them for what they are. The problem is that due to what games have become, the newly acquired demographic and their expectations have forever changed what is acceptable and what will sell. These will always be imitations, never innovations, which is the spirit of what OP was speaking of. We saw what games COULD be, what they could more fully encompass with time. They didn't though. They went a different path, the cinematic path. The glorious alternative of interactivity will always be a minor subgenre, referred to as "CRPG" or "Immersive Sim" instead of the basis of gaming itself.

Little correction at about 16:20 ; that's an Indoril Ruin, not a Nord Ruin. It's meant to be indicative of the old expanse of House Indoril, before it's third era decline, and before House Hlaalu expanded wildly off of trade with the Empire. There will be nord ruins in the velothi mountains when the player ventures further into Redoran territory in the future, however!

Maybe atmosphere and roleplaying, but the actual gamplay systems are mostly incredibly archaic and are only getting worse and worse as time goes on lol. We're used to the jank and can deal with it, but the average person will get off the boat at Seyda and go "what the fuck is this mess" Kinda a bit of a circlejerk to act like Morrowind hasn't aged poorly as an actual game imo, especially when it was already outmoded in many ways when it originally came out

I didn't say it was the most perfect game ever made, I said it only aged better with time. Presuming, naturally, I'd be saying that as a fan of the game. And other fans of the game still playing it would likely agree. Certainly it would be ridiculous to say it's not antiquated, and a product of a period of experimentation in game design. But I don't know what to say, I lambast nobody turned off from the game because mother of god yes, it is innaccessible. There are things about it that make me want to tear my hair out. But the fact that the game has such a consistently healthy player base years later should also tell you that it is, for many of us, a rough diamond we can see the shine in. It's jam-packed with so many interesting and fascinating and rich ideas, systems and features, that game development has either forgotten, or left unexploited. And it's those that compel me to return to it time and again, and to continue to enjoy it, time and again. It's hard to say what it is, but I find I only enjoy Morrowind more, as I get older.

To expand on and also push back a little on your point, I think Morrowind is def one of those games that are an acquired taste. Even back when it was released people had difficulty getting into it cuz it was a 3D fps RPG with 90s iso RPG mechanics. That blend was just as off-putting and weird back then as it is now, but as it stands, it is one of only a few games ever made to blend those styles. Kenshi is the only other one I can really think of that follows that formula but it sticks to the iso formula rather than it being a FPS. I also believe the fact Morrowind is so moddable is why it is popular to this day. There are a lot of mods that do improve the gameplay by a large margin, such as removing the maddening hidden dice roll combat for a more streamlined "if you are close enough to hit it you can deal damage, the amount just depends on your stats" style, so it saves newcomers a lot of time and frustration trying to decipher a (by this point) ancient gameplay meta that even people who prefer it say is not for everyone. Also the art style and world building of Morrowind (disregarding the sequel's retcons and updates) is very unique and appealing. Morrowind is a very alien world compared to any other Elder scrolls game, which keeps people wondering what other whacky new things they may be able to see.

Really enjoy the Morrowind theory opening, got me thinking. I think that is the truth of it the small details, but also the grown familiarity that people often claim it resonates with. If anything somehow it manages to marry the bizarre and hostile atmosphere as real and almost traditionally cosmopolitan (Have a 500+ modset and I launch it to just wander around cities/towns more than quest). It's initial presentation (implying the players(Very) first exp. w/ it) to the player with an almost in-built hostility (mechanics-wise too), the player is "Outlander"/"S'wit"/"N'wah" in context to the story of integrating into the Dunmer's myth to be revered, the flora/fauna are varyingly strange and hostile, magic as you pointed out has a double-edged and compound effect as do the gods that grant and wield the very same forces. In that hostility it rewards those who challenge it, in it's oddity it rewards those who question it, it achieves to an affect the pursuit of almost every fantasy author or creator to fully immerse and engage the presentee into the rules and arrangement of a world that one in any normal circumstance would reject and makes itself belivable in both making the player aware of their fragility/ignorance of the reality it's dropping them in, but also allowing them to come to fully "know" it (I know that the medium of a video game already has the barrier of true presentism, but give me a bone here) which is pretty unique to Morrowind's depiction in the regard that it keeps you in it's believable frame. (until an npc walks incessantly into a wall..) I know that TES as a whole is really what I'm singing praises to or other series around the time, but in seeing how the Devs of this very mod and associated projects are working and having dabbled with the CS myself (the clunky, but being improved upon thing that it is lol) it's easy to use but also in it's own sense having a hostility (eh? lol no..) asks for that slow determined pace of execution and consideration (Really the more with less idea although you can always make more assets/fx/etc.. so I dunno strange paradox there (capability/will?)). Really when making an int/ext with the approach of someone seriously trying to depict the world as TR is doing (Yes leads to a slow cottage style((as long as staff are limited in a sense?))production with potential ever-fractalizing detail granularity bloat blah blah) is it's creating still-lifes of a reality in unreality (high-falootin theory stuff I know). The other part of this is that it's community really lives up to the idea that Kirkbride and co. put into it in that (as you pointed out) 90's-00's game industry that had a respect/"power to the player" spirit and the idea of c0da (I know Kirkbride deism...) that really they took and ran with to the present day. I mean come on the OpenMW team is now making a standalone game engine out of what was a project to revitalize/preserve it. Out of everything really, I think Morrowind got enough things right at just the right time to now honestly be getting into another renaissance with renewed interest and all the new tech.

@@veryrare432hz The problem is the following: it is pointless to do Tamriel. Because the quality will go head first into the ground once you have to take into consideration every single micro-managed little unique detail of every province, their lore and unique factions, characters and locations. Then there is the issue with the music, the voices and the overall geographical and urban unique meshes for every single province. On top of this are the quests and let's not forget that everything has to have a porpuse beyond just exploration with a gigantinc mega plot that ties everything in Tamriel into one big mega quest (something Bethesda tried with Arena and failed in so many levels due to the insane scope of the map). Better to have one tightly polished and complete Morrowind than a 200 years proyect with half hassed plots and factions limited to the (to this day and age) generic quest system of Morrowind.

People talk about Morrowind because it is the last actual RPG Bethesda made. Everything that came after was about exploration and being "cinematically epic" - not that Morrowind wasn't either of those things, it just also had the mechanical foundations the later games lacked. To put it another way; Morrowind was the last Elder Scrolls title Bethesda didn't dumb down for mass market appeal.

Morrowind and Fallout NV was the last time Bethesda ever made games with passion and love as a focus. It's sad to see how much Beth had devolve from a bunch of passionate nerds who tried making rpgs because they were inspired by the very thing they love to a stale dry company that tried replicating their glory days to no success

Morrowind was absolutely dumbed down for mass market appeal lol, people complained about that a bunch when it first came out. It's significantly simpler and more streamlined than daggerfall, regardless of that being a good choice or not. It's really not a terribly complex game, you're kidding yourself if you think bethesda wasn't trying to appeal to a wider market than other more difficult to learn rpgs.
@todaysdesperadohatesavocad7109
@todaysdesperadohatesavocad7109 8 күн бұрын
@@realname8362I think it’s more that Bethesda created two distinct RPG’s that hit incredibly high notes in two entirely different niches but managed to be extremely well made and in-depth in their own subgenre. Daggerfall, a vast fantasy life simulation with a realistically sized world, but minimal interactions on a more personal level and lacking as much handwritten/hand placed material. Morrowind, a much smaller scope in physical size and “simulation” but had infinitely deeper characterization, personality, and interpersonal interaction with many little deliberate touches by the developers. I’ll never argue Morrowind is superior to Daggerfall or vice versa, because I think they were both Bethesda’s only actual passion projects that came out spectacularly. As for the other games in the series, well, they failed at doing what either of those titles managed to do.

Quick tip: manage your fatigue - it's the most important thing in the game - without it you can't do anything. So make sure to go in fights with it full (either via rest or potions). It also influences trade, cast chance and npc first time disposition If you sort it out, your hits will connect most of the time and magic will be casted correctly

Another tip: Don't be scared of just playing blind. Messing up and persevering is the most fun way of engaging with it, every pc becomes god of the world eventually. Whether bruteforcing obtuse systems or working out the (many, many) crazy exploits it's all valid. The meat of the 'game' part of Morrowind is discovering the mechanics; you're mostly there for the exploration.
@tobyvision

@@theamazingbatboy By pure chance the first time I ever played it I chose athletics and apothecary which are a very broken combo in the sense that you level basically everything without really needing to know any of the rules. Just run everywhere and eat every new plant you encounter. Pretty soon you are able to create potions that negate the magic and combat of the even the strongest enemies. I would recommend it for a first playthrough where you just want to explore.

To me Morrowind is my childhood. Games like this are the only connection i had or shared passion with my father. I was 11 years old when it released and when i played it. English is not my first language so it was difficult to understand the game but that only made it more magical and complex. But yea Morrowind, or for example Baldurs gate. Childhood Nostalgia to the max.

I recently started a new Tamriel Rebuilt playthrough after seeing that there's really good Hlaalu and Thieves Guild content on the mainland, and holy cow is Andothren awesome! I've been playing TR for years but I really only spent time in Old Ebonheart, Firewatch, and the doing Telvanni shenanigans in the east, I can't believe there's multiple cities of this size and quality in this one project. To anyone watching this that's interested in Tamriel Rebuilt, you should definitely check out the dedicated sections on the UESP. All of the content is awesome, but it's a giant landmass and it doesn't quite have the signposting of the original Morrowind, so you should look up where to go to start specific guild questlines. The Mages and Fighters guilds are in every major settlement, but finding Telvanni Lords or Thieves Guild agents to start the questlines is tough without looking it up.

I first played Morrowind right after it came out when I was in 2nd grade. It was My dad's birthday at the time and my Mom picked out a few PC games she thought he'd like. One of the was Morrowind. Now even at that age, PC gaming was my life. I knew more about Unreal Tournament '99 than I did about my family lol. So obviously I was gonna be playing Morrowind. The day I fired that shit up - my life changed. Never in my life did I think I'd ever play a game that had EVERYTHING the way Morrowind did at the time. And then my older brother got into it - and we'd stay up from dawn until dusk playing the game and messing around with the editor. In fact, I played the game so much that I had the worst fever dream of my life to date - and it was Morrowind themed. Morrowind is a truly a work of art and it brought me so much joy and fun and memories. And getting to see how far the modding community has come - just wow. I remember when PlanetElderScrolls was the one stop shop for mods xD

Now OPENMW brought it to a whole new dimension of beauty mixed with the multiplayer addition TES3MP that tuns this into a MMORPG or whatever you choose to MAKE & MOD IN. There are no words.... The thing that excites me the most about Morrowind are the mods that include actual towns of a more believable size than TES base games. The lower system requirements of the older engine, graphics etc. combined with modern system power is finally making that viable _without setting the PC/game itself on fire_ and I frigging love it.

That line " tell her you play world of tanks" earned you a sub 🤣. I recall playing this "mod" way back when Oblivion was still new, and honestly forgot about it. More recently with the tsunami of rushed, incomplete, awful games and uninspired lazy devs and greedy publishers being commonplace I find myself going back and playing older games more and more, because they are actually fun. I am glad I found this video while looking for lore tidbits, I now know what I will be doing for the next few years. lol. I never realised how much I missed Morrowind. even the mighty skyrim is like generic trash compared to it. My hope is that one day Bethesda will use planet-tech to make an actual full and complete planet Nirn, a real fully traversable planet complete with vast oceans and continents, moons and a real day/night cycle with no loading screens. Much like Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous, No Mans Sky etc have done for years. Its more than possible as they only need to make one planet not a universe or even a solar system. all the tools and resources are there. the only new content would be the other continents like Akavir etc which could be DLCs that came out for years afterwards. Its a crazy dream, but more than possible with current technology that has been out for years already. Thank you for making this video.
