Cheers to this review. I like how you call out other reviews for blowing their load on "good" album. I've never heard of the band myself but makes me want to check out their stuff even though I'm not a death metal fan! Props to the Canadian Iron Maiden tour t-shirt too! Cheers!

Thank you so much for saying it. I tried my best in my review to break down why I think this record stood out. It's not instrumentally proficient and the band as a whole isn't the most special. In my opinion, it's overhyped, as well. I don't think it's the best DM record of 2020, either. There are quite a bit of records I've enjoyed more. I know people would expect people like you and I to give it an 8 or 9, and a 4 or 4.5, but yeah, no. There are better records and this is more a statement on the scene and what it's up against. Don't get the Gorguts thing, either. But then again, I attempt to just ignore many of the higher up publications unless it particularly interest me. That is why I much prefer watching independent reviewers on KZbin and journalists that are not tied to specific outlets. Great review, Rob!

Completely agree that this record is solid, but no where near AOTY quality. Funnily enough, I immediately listened to Speciation by Faceless Burial afterward, which instantly overshadowed Mortal.

It's just another (fun) old school death metal record...

I do agree. Necrot has been a solid Death Metal band. The 1st half of the album is great, but the 2nd half is disappointing and has some filler. Also mortal does not even match the songwriting and quality of Obscura, Colored Sands (those 2 albums are genuine Masterpieces) I think I would give this a 7/10 as well

Honestly, and I wouldn't say that as an offense to Necrot, its just those Gorguts records really are MASTERPIECES, or at least damn near close to it. Some of the most unique listening experiences ever concocted from a band that consistently breaks, bends, and re-writes the rules of music.

@@themetalmeltdownofficial its such an odd comparison for a journalist to make, if they said early era Gorguts the comparison would make a lot more sense. Im hoping it was just a semantics mistake on their part because comparing this to later era Gorguts makes zero sense, its nothing alike.

@@Cosmic_Cretin I wonder the same thing - a comparison to the first two records would make A LOT more sense.

The Metal Meltdown Honestly I do feel bad for Necrot. comparing anything to Gorguts is a little unfair since you are comparing Necrot to a band that has made some of the most mind blowing, genre Breaking records and also a band that has one of the most consistent and Flawless Discographies in all of Death Metal.

Couldn’t agree more! Good album but no where near ground breaking,

I listened to it about a dozen times so far, thought I was missing something
