Yeah, at least lorewise he actually has a character now instead of just being a jobber. Previous netherrrealm games always had at least 3 characters that no interesting personalities or motivation besides being something for everyone else to punch at, but just about every playable character in MK1 feels pretty fleshed out.

@@UnifiedEntity Well in Liu Kang's bio, it's stated he tried to create a new era where everyone would have the OPPORTUNITY to achieve peace. So assumedly, he crafted a setting where the original Tarkatans would just be born as normal Edenians, but perhaps to his chagrin, they turned into monsters anyway because a plague emerged that force them into their original fate. OR, he had tarkatans be a disease in hope the result is they'd have pity and remorse taken on them so they wouldn't be persecuted and outcasted. Either way, something clearly went wrong because as much as people meme, Liu Kang isn't actually a jerk and genuinely wanted everyone to have a better future.

Li Mei's story sounds about in line with what I pictured happening for her after the death of King Jerrod alluded to in the trailer. (Oh yes, the Koma Inu statue for Li Mei's attack looks awesome, and if the colors do connect to jade as HBW suggests, it would be a great nod to Jade too.)Hurrah for Tanya and Milena's relationship being canonized for this new timeline, with the forbidden aspects of "vows of chastity and loyalty" and Milena's progressively worsening disease adding delicious flavor to how their relationship will change over time. (I'm getting some destructive Hindu god aspects from that special attack too, HBW.)

Funny thing is that Reiko appeared in the extended footage where Li Mei beats up some soldiers, as a fan caught on his phone. Another extended trailer shows our three Lin Kuei ninja’s scaling up a wall and the airborne Smoke is ambushed by a mysterious assailant that swooped down on him (hint hint Nitara).

I didn't play MK: Deception, so I wasn't familiar with Darrius. However, after learning his backstory, I wonder if his presence (standing next to Tanya) hints at her still becoming the Edenian traitor (either intentionally or unintentionally). Also, if there's an expansion game to MK1, it would be interesting to see a prequel to the current storyline.

Kombat Konspiracy: Kenshi has Tarkat. Go back to the first gameplay trailer and pause it when he confronts Johnny. You can see his hand is decaying. This is the secret that Subzero mentions in their prefight dialog. This also explains why he is helping Mileena, he is trying to find a cure.

I went back and studied it carefully (In all that glorious 4K) and going frame by frame, it doesn't look like his hand is infected. It appeared to be heavily tattoo'd (Which checks out as he is formerly part of the Yakuza as mentioned in his bio). I think the Yakuza connection is the actual secret Sub-Zero is referring to as Kenshi wants to distance himself from that.

I don't know how common of an opinion this is, but I'm not too big of a fan of Tanya's design. But at least a former villain turned to the side of the good guys is the kind of change I like to see in this sort of reboots. I don't have much to say about Li Mei. I only got in the series with mk9, so I only had her cameo in mkx and that didn't do much for me. At least this will bring some new life to her. I have always had a soft spot for Baraka. I liked that they gave him something more than 'Shao Kahn's henchman number #' in mk11, and I like even more they doubled down on the 'leader looking out for his fellows' aspects here. If Reptile does return, I wonder if Steve Blum will reprise the role. Baraka's voice sounds like the same as mk11, so he should be available.

Baraka stole the show for me! Li Mei was pretty cool too, However Tanya was a huge miss on many levels for me, other than a yellow outfit, she's unrecognizable might as well be someone else completely, and I know it's a rebooted timeline meaning there will be change, but on Tanya It's just too much (and not even good) and unecessary in my eyes.

I am curious about Edenia, it seems as though it does not exist. I dont think the Umgadi are Edenian military forces or that there are two separate from the ones in dragon crest, I think they are just different hands of enforcement. The dragoon force could be the general military group and Umgadi are specific to the royal family, thats why they are called the royal guard. Because Li Mei is part of another enforcement faction -The Capitol Police force. So yeah I dont think they’re dress differently to distinguish outworld vs edenia, I think just different enforcement but all Outworld.
