In today’s Kombat Kast, it was explained that they thought she’d be better evil mostly because she looked that way; they also wanted to explore this possible timeline wherein she’s actually this greedy and lustful person. I disagree on the premise that, just because she looked like an undead witch in Deception, means she has to be evil. But I understand wanting to show different timelines and possibilities with the characters. (I still don’t like it, but I’m also excited to play the character, either way.)

In the sindel live stream that happened earlier today, 1 of the dev's said that they went with this direction because her story didnt seem to match with her look as far as looking like a strong & sinister looking woman. This retcon is horrible in my opinion. In the original story, Sindel is actually a character, who develops as time progresses due to circumstances and events. She starts off as being a good monarch, wife and mother, but when Shao invades her Realm and kills Jerod, she becomes his trophy wife. She agrees to this for the sake of her young daughter. Kitana's parents are good people, which is why Kitana herself would grow up to be a good character; questioning her place in court, as Shao; her supposed father, is a ruthless warlord. Had her mother been equally ruthless and power-hungry, then this would've been reflected in Kitana's personality and her moral character. So when you change that, and make Sindel inherently evil, then it becomes incoherent; as this would almost necessitate the daughter to become like the mother. When Shao Kahn sets his sights on Earthrealm, Sindel seeks to prevent him from conquering Earthrealm, and she performs some kind of magical ritual in which she sacrifices her own self; creating a barrier between Outworld and Earthrealm that Shao Kahn cannot pass. This shows her character. It's the opposite of being selfish and self-centered, and she obviously leaves her daughter in the care of her greatest enemy; trusting that Kitana would eventually learn the truth, and knowing that she wouldn't be corrupted by Shao Kahn. Later, she's resurrected by sorcerers, and her mind enslaved, to ensure her compliance. She helps Shao Kahn invade Earthrealm as a revived witch, creating an interesting conflict between her and her own daughter. One obvious way to resolve this story is to have Sindel sacrifice herself once again, saving Kitana in some way: love overcomes and Sindel redeems herself. When Sindel doesn't make the sacrifice, and instead is assassinated by Quan Chi, then the entire foundation for the MK3 premise is nullified. There couldn't have been a barrier to stop Shao from waging war on Earthrealm. Everything after MK2 would stop making sense (not that the Mortal Kombat storylines are very coherent but still); you can't annihilate the foundation of a house without the roof collapsing. The new Sindel is just evil, period. There's no drama, no suffering, no loss, no sacrifice, no development and a redemption arch is now scrapped as a possible conclusion of her story. The descent into madness and/or corruption due to the lust for power is most effectively portrayed when it starts out with the character being essentially benigne. If you're just going to make a character corrupt and evil, then that's fine in and of itself, but in this case, it ruins the character. I have no idea why they did this. It's clearly not an improvement, and with time-travel being a thing in MK11, a missed opportunity to showcase a more detailed backstory for Sindel, fleshing out her character and (eventually/potentially) producing some kind of redemption narrative. I don't like it.

Well, they reached a very sweet spot. Since her appearance is not canon and doesn't belong in the main story, they can just do whatever shyt they want and say "oh, it's a different timeline". Original timeline: she lost everything to Shao Kahn and committed suicide, only to be resurrected by Shang Tsung through Shao Kahn's will. Eventually the spell was broken and she fought with the Earthrealms. New timeline: She killed her husband, stayed loyal with Shao Kahn, presumably died by poison or lost in the desert, and resurrected by Quan Chi. I feel they could have made Sindel be a ruthless ruler who wants to help people like a slightly less violent corrupted Raiden. Then her new personality and her aesthetic would fit together. Instead she is literally Tanya who will do anything to acquire and sustain the power they desire. Difference being this new Sindel wants to conquer realms while Tanya wants Edenia to be free and for her own and she wants nothing with the other realms.

Seeing this ending breaks my heart, Sindel is a close second of my favorite MK characters with her Daughter being my #1 Favorite I was hoping when this retcon was revealed that her ending would be a Troll move by NRS showing that she was not evil and that it was all an act to help Kitana and her allies get close to Kronika and defeat her But seeing this I am just disgusted, Sindel has always been depicted as a Loving Mother when not brainwashed and even in the old timeline it was her love for her daughter that freed her So much wasted potential and all the character development she has had over the last 23 years is just gone I was really looking forward to her in the combat pack, Hell she was the only character I was looking forward to but know I don't know

They took the easy way out.But her game play and character design is really cool!I would have loved to see the caring side of sindel and watch her evolve as a character and watch her build a relationship with kitana! Also they said her “character look” didn’t match the characters personality of a caring mother..But don’t judge a book by its cover I say! I just realized something which really pissed me off. In this ending they've retconned Sindel to kill Jerrod. They even show how she stabbed him in the heart. But what pissed me off even more is that NRS storywriters aren't even consistent in their own retcons. I don't know if many remember but earlier this year in an official Kitana reveal trailer it was retconned that D'Vorah was the one to kill Jerrod 'on Shao Kahn's behalf'. 7 months later apparently it was also a lie (why would D'Vorah lie to Kitana tho?) and it was Sindel who did it. Give me a break.

I was never aware that D'Vorah killed Mileena in MkX out of revenge for Shao Kahn having conquered the kingdom of the kytinn, killing Mileena was wrong, D'vorah should have killed Shao Kahn, but he was dead at the time.

My idea of it was she was recovered from the timeline at the time that she was resurrected by Quan Chi, not before, so this Sindel’s memories are altered. This ending is based on her brainwashed perspective. If it was done by a general narrator, we probably would have gotten a different ending.
