Add insult to injury. Back in mkx, when scorpion (hanzo) killed quan chi. He tried to kill shinnok but d'vorah stabbed him and he (hanzo) somehow lived and was able to walk it off easy. Compare that to mk11 where he gets stabbed once again by d'vorah and somehow DIES without even staying strong, and mk11 hanzo is more stronger than his mkx counterpart compared to mk11 d'vorah where it's basically her but young. Had no strength and is more weaker than her mkx counterpart or hanzo himself. That just shows how NRS themselves are nothing more but a pitiful loss of a company and I feel glad that people are throwing flames at them.

You have a good point here and it just makes me think of the several hundred great ideas that NRS could’ve gone with but blew it. I like the big buildup to dark Raiden only for NRS to retcon him in the first five minutes of MK 11.

That scene made absolutely no sense. I don't care that Shang Tsung's power was transferred to her. Her defeating all of those characters was crazy. What makes it worse is how they all attacked her one by one instead of all at once. I don't know why NRS decided to refrence that fight in Mortal Kombat 1 when people clearly hated that scene.

And since MK9 was their first 2.5D fighting game that redefined/rebooted the franchise I can give them a pass on this one. Actually in terms of feats she is one of the stronger Kombatants. She got the better of scorpion in mkx too. Kinda crazy that a character that supposed to be a jobber has beaten people like kotal Kahn, scorpion, mileena, Baraka, Tanya, ferra & Torr, king jerod, and more.

Yes sex appeal is needed in any fighting game. It makes the player connect to the character... not all characters need it, but if the character can and it suits the confidence level of the character... or the motive of the character in the game. Now in MK, Edenians and nudity go hand in hand because they come from a realm based on the garden of Eden, where nudity isn't something special but the norm.

I honestly prefer the overtop sexy costumes and proportions from MK 9 and the 3D era. I like that the dudes looked like pro wrestlers and the women basically looked like pornstars. Exaggerated costumes, exaggerated violence and exaggerated stages. Those games just had an unserious and campy fun charm to it. I'm not really a fan of the whole "realistic" and "grounded" aesthetic that they tend to go for now. Not to mention what I miss most of all is the random gibberish the characters would scream when getting hit and doing specials.

I'm surprised that replacing voice actors wasn't listed in that thread. I remember the pre-MK11 days when Scorpion's VA (Patrick Seitz) found out he was replaced through the trailer in 2018. It's weird that NRS kept Kenshi, Johnny and Takeda's VAs since MKX, but felt the need to replace all the others

Exactly for the 90s when Mortal Kombat came out it was 20 years since the 90s shit like that was just not shocking anymore. It was the norm to have women wear basically nothing in video games and have balloons on their chest. It’s so boring though what does every female character have to look like that? Since the 70s, plenty of horror movies and most action movies that have been combining gore and sex so MK having the female kombatants in revealing clothes should’ve never been an issue but unfortunately nowadays certain types of people wanna either take offense or argue the level of practicality the outfits have. Some even go as far as to get pissy about how the women from the 3D era up till MK9 had huge boobs despite the fact irl there’s plenty of women who naturally have chests like that if not twice as big. MK having "sexy" character shouldn't be controversial. For one, why is having attractive female characters a bad thing, ESPECIALLY when your game also has attractive male characters? Say what you will about Johnny Cage but bro is rocking body goals. Second, why were the bikinis automatically a "bad" thing and why did they need to be removed? Don't say "they wouldn't actually fight like that", realistically Kung Lao wouldn't be fighting with a hat that is more likely to chop hos hand off than be caught barehanded. The "bikinis" were a general staple of Outworld and Edenian designs and they were done TASTEFULLY. They focused more on the style than the sexual appeal early on and it only truly got wild and indulgent with MK9, but MK9 is also ironically seen as having a lot of people's favorite depictions of their characters DESPITE largely featuring the same male and female body models. Clearly, they did something right and it wasn't just appealing to our hormones. Also, going off that in-world logic, Edenia and Outworld were characterized by exotic and scant clothing designs, it WAS NOT exclusive to women. Goro, Shao Kahn, Reiko, Quan Chi, Kintaro, even Motaro all had their chest out in the open, why were the ladies exclusively the ones who got desexualized? What's worse is that they didn't even do a good job at what they set out to do, because despite getting rid of the bikinis most of the female characters, CETRION and D'VORAH included, still have HIGH HEELS on their feet despite literally not wearing shoes. You still have the gross, weirdly fetishistic scene where D'vorah gives Mileena a kiss of death and vomits bugs all over her. You still have both Sheeva and Sindel talking themselves up as "QWEENZ" and talking about turning the men around them into consorts. The older designs, sexual or not, were cooler and easier to identify. You never wondered which character was which and didn't have to think long about who someone was. The only thing modern Tanya even has in common with her old self is that she wears the color yellow. Kitana didn't used to be asian and never was in the older games, she was Edenian which largely took after Greek culture and you could plainly see that every time she took her mask off and exposed her massive man jaw. It wasn't broke. They fixed it anyways. And the result is worse designs. That's the bottom line.

The Sindel massacre was cool because we finally got to see her flex her power. In the old Midway era games, Sindel was a plot device (MK3) or a background character (MK4-MKDA) who was never around and off doing other things. I understand why people hate it, though. She killed so many peoples favs (mine included). Sindel is based on the titular character from that old Chinese kung fu flick, The Bride with White Hair. And that character was a fighting machine.

MK isn't the only fighting games franchise that tone down the sx appeal. It does feels like we missing something that used to be there, but it slowly missing over time in your favorite franchise you grow up with. I guess everyone know why, it either because its not acceptable nowadays because more casual people who don't like seing weirdo things that has on the games, or it's simply a business decision to market the games/products to wider modern audiences. Either it's one of them or both. I grow up playing MK since my childhood, i can tell the current MK doesn't feel the same. Most games franchise I grow up with doesn't feel the same. actually everything does feel like everything are inspired by Marvel nowadays, that also something i notice recently.

It feels like characters who should be powerful often aren’t. Kabal, for example, should be a real threat with his speed alone. Noob Saibot, Dark Raiden, and others have so much wasted potential. I'm getting tired of the same old narrative where the good guys always win. (I know it happened before) But It would be refreshing to see someone like Shao Kahn or Shang Tsung take over all the realms, turning Dark raiden into a peasant to hunt the remaining characters. leaving underground heroes to fight the regime😮‍💨. Watching villains like Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Quan Chi, and Onaga get easily beaten by characters like Cassie Cage is just ridiculous. Get rid of Liu Kang being the poster boy. villains should be powerful enough to require three high tier heroes to take them down, not just one-on-one battles. Oh and I hate Cassie cage, wasted slot of a character.

I'm from the original MK games (had the first MK for the SNES), so I've seen a lot of changes throughout its years. The success of Tekken 3 was so huge and influential that every fighting game wanted to go full 3D. Street Fighter realised that they needed to learn an entire new thing, already dominated by others, so they went back to their original formula. As for MK, with Tobias out of the picture, Boon insisted with rebranding the franchise. Now, Boon did had some great ideas during the 3D era, the introduction of actual multiple martial arts to the fighters, with the ability to change between them in a match... it was clunky, but it was awesome! I've always said this: games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat always catered to the gaming enthusiasts first. But games like Virtua Fighter and Tekken always catered to martial arts enthusiasts instead. But MK back in the 3D era was trying to gather the best of two worlds. They even had legacy movesets, giving the players the feel that their time practicing in the last game wasn't a total waste when a new game came out. And that's when Boon got lazy and fumbled it. Armaggedon had so many characters that, instead of adding new styles for each of the new entries, they simply removed styles from characters and gave it to the new ones. Now check this out, I love karate so, when Deception came out, and there was this blonde bad guy that fought karate called Kobra (yes, I saw the Johnny Lawrence reference there), he immediately became my main. But in Armaggedon, they removed his karate style and gave it to someone else. Yeah, I was pissed. MK9 kinda redeemed itself for me... I liked that they went back to their 2D ways while introducing new mechanics, a full story mode and the return of iconic stages... not a big fan of the rebooted timeline though. Enter MKX... oh man... So they reintroduce multiple styles to characters, but you can't fully use them in a match. It's like fighting with a hand behind your back... you can never experience the full potential of a character. That was the downfall for me. As for the other more controversial matter... maybe its because I was a kid, but I thought that even in MK2 the female characters where pretty sexy and revealing, at least in comparison to other fighting games. Yeah, their torso was completely covered, but their legs were pretty revealing... I guess it depends on what part of the female anatomy you prefer... I was always a "legs-and-ass" type of guy xD But that was the whole schtick of Mortal Kombat: its over-the-topness on every aspect of the game... the story, the designs, the movesets... now, it seems like its just trying to go generic.

When it comes to the sex, appeal of Mortal Kombat, don’t start off with the original trilogy because it was just getting started. would really push to appeal to the forefront the movies and the Konquest tv show in the 90s And the woman that would cosplay the characters back in that time. He says Shao Kahn gave them as part of their deal but that also makes no sense, Shao Kahn should have no dominion over Earthrealm's souls. * Fatalities becoming nothing more than torture porn. Back in the day fatalities were meant as quick finishers, now the characters will maim and maul their opponents in increasingly sadistic ways while showing as much gore as possible.

9:34 the skin tone of Tanya in MK4 and Deception it was a little controversial, but it wasn’t crazy. She pretty much still had her same face. She just went from brown skin to light skin referencing Cleopatra with the holy Egyptian look and that was her iconic look for 20 years. Now the MK1 look she’s just unrecognizable, took away her Egyptian look gave her the Wakanda look because they can’t help themselves, but copy marvel and then made her look middle-aged when she’s supposed to be looking useful because she’s Edenian. It's a complete 180 regarding the design and personality. I think the designs changed for the better because I'd rather see them as regal warriors rather than promiscuous female ninjas clearly made to grab attention. Another example is old Jade vs MK11 Jade. Before she was literally using her staff as a stripper pole and wearing very revealing clothes but MK11 double downed on her being an assassin and gave her more concealing clothes

There are some(mostly 2 or 3) I will have no mind for. 1. The Kombat kids, honestly with how most of the previous getting killed off in the last game they needed a few new faces to have in the arching story. Don' t care much for most of them even Takeda cuase hes another ninja esque character that most people would go for anyways, "CAUSE HES COOOOL!" However they serve thier purpose and we get to know most of them throughout here and in MK11. 2. Just relatively because a character is wildly popular doesnt mean they can get kill off either, this shit aint Game of Thrones here. Hardly anyone doesnt want to see their character get kill off in the story even one that is MORTAL KOMBAT. An iconic character like Liu Kang was kill off by his mentor Raiden who sees him as his own son and choosen one got snuff out before he can fight Shao for the last chapter and no bats an eye on that. 3 And lastly is the lastest one which is the gender swapping of characters and this alone is even more dumb. Look I have no minds when it comes down to gender swapping tje characters as long thier is a good story and gameplay that goes with it. And there has genderswap before in other media that no one bats an eye or questions with like Nick Fury or Catwomen to name a few. There's also to mentioned the amonunt of changes every character that has gone through with Liu Kang's new era that people just pass by like Kuai Liang being Scorpion and NOT a spectre demon from the Netherrealm, Mileena & Kitana being canonical sisters where Sindel have birth to for some reason Johnny Cage who has the most character progression in MK11 has gone down the drain with not having to meet Sonya and raise a family with her again. In all the games when mk did the sexy stuff it just looked goofy to me cause the animations were so bad. I thought MKX katana was perfect. Those games were never controversial until more recent times, though. In fact im pretty sure nrs covering skarlet from head to toe was way more controversial in its own time. The guest characters i hate like New Orleans drivers. First, we're adding out of universe characters to a series that has more than a dozen of its own characters that haven't been fully playable in a decade or more. Its also the characters themselves. None of them fit the universe imo. They should be taking characters from movies like big trouble in little china, enter the dragon, the last dragon, the golden child etc. Movies that actually inspired MK, and others in a similar vein. Give me Sho'Nuff or Jack Burton or Egg Shen or the wing kong guy with the beard and long hair and the butcher knives (played by Al Leong). 3D Era was my favorite and MK9 is my favorite MK game of all time which imo , it was the last good MK game. The skimpy outfits were in 3, in 4, Deadly Alliance, especially with Nitara. AND ON TOP OF THAT, lets Kui Liang marry Scorpions wife? you know what word I want to use but some c... made this and thought '' yea , this will annoy the fans cause it happened to me irl and I liked it mmmm 🤤'' They censored the outfits that they ''remastered'' from previous MK games as well. Nitara classic is censored, Li Mei's is censored, list goes on. Modders , fans of the game went in and fixed it and guess what? it looks 100xs better when its how it's suppose to be. MK use to have dark and supernatural elements to it, the music use to give me chills on how dark and ancient it sounded. The Church , The Bank theme from MK3. Elder God, The Well, Prison from MK4 etc etc. Now it all sounds like music from a drama show on The CW or some garbage DC crap. I don't like where MK is going, it hasn't been good since MK9. I don't plan on buying the dlc for MK1 as I stopped playing 2 weeks after , I don't plan on getting their next game, because I know nothing will change and I've been buying and playing MK since the very beginning, never missed a game.

Ethnicity for mk has Always been controversial cause they never actually decides what edinians are, originally before nrs It was consistent, they were egyptians, so sometimes black, sometimes Just a slight tan, then mk 9 and mkx came out and It was for some reason White except Jade(which sure ethnicity Is hard to show) but then mk11 comes out and kitana Is asian, Ye sure Rain and Jade stayed kinda consistent but still she randomly becomes asian, then the movie comes out and mileena Is black then mk1 turns em all back to White or slight tans, they Just really can't decide what edinians are.
