What is truly sad is that while Mortarion hated the Emperor, he did love his sons. He traded his soul and body to save his sons from horrible suffering. Cant really put fault to his line of thinking, even if he could’ve made better choices beforehand.

If there is one primarch that would've turned against the Emperor no matter what, even in the best scenario, it would be Mortarion. Yeah, even over Kurze and Angron. With other traitors there were external factors or other things that could've been adressed; with Mortarion not so much. His personalitt was rotten at its core.
