Love all your videos - curious if you have thoughts on the notion that placing pads of moss in this fashion reduces airflow through the soil. I have heard many people recommend against doing this. Perhaps it is ok for shohin because they are in such small pots?

Thanks. There are pro and contras at many things concerning bonsai growing. The pro in this case is that mosses keeps the soil moist for a longer time. For trees in training stage it also adds a bonus, forming a moist and airy microclimate at the top of the soil, developing better surface roots when trees are in early training stages. Top roots like the airy moist surrounding made by the mosses. Mosses do lower the airflow a little, but not much if the right type of airy mosses are used. Open soil surfaces allows a greater airflow, but also raises the intensity of watering. Adding mosses covering some parts of the soil surface (leaving the established nebari off) will help keeping the soil moist for a longer time (but only a few hours). If you are a professional bonsai grower who can water several times a day, that's not a problem keeping an open soil surface. If you are away from your garden several hours and many days a week for work, the need of watering have to be reduced somehow. Getting your small Shohin safely through the day. Mosses at the soil surface helps keeping the soil surface transpiration down, and that's more important than risking them to dry out. Give and take. Make the best choice from the given situation. Kind regards, Morten Albek.

Michael Cowart Hi Michael. It is called a Tokonoma in Japanese. A display niche. Normally indoors but I decided to make it outdoors.
