As morticians we get asked about the condition of crime victims bodies...
"Are they viewable?"
"How would we handle this case?"
"What would the body look like?"
Kari the Mortician and Ryan & Brian from Undertaking the Podcast will answer those questions and many more. Each episode several embalmers/morticians will talk about criminal cases of murder and unexplained deaths and how they would handle the deceased victims from those cases.
In this episode, Kari, Ryan & Brian will discuss the case of the Emmett Till murder. This story was a horrific moment in the history of our country but it became a pivotal point in the racial driven crimes in the country as well. Emmett Till should be a name every American knows! Many people have looked at the criminal aspect of the case and the murderers, but we will discuss caring for the victim and the sad task that laid before the funeral directors who cared for him.
Warning things may be discussed that are disturbing to some people. We do not show photos from the case but many are available if you google the victim's name.
If you have a case you would like us to cover please comment below!

Of course someone who belongs to a group or classification of the perpetrators wouldn't want what happened to a 14 year old child, who was kidnapped, tortured, humiliated, and ultimately murdered, would want this taught as required curriculum. We learn of modified and white washed history of European descent events, and this is the standard of education. This country has a very extensive and horrific past and present, and it's amazing to me that people don't know of this and they are ok and content with atrocities like this being blank, elusive, and missing from history. Very telling that someone thinks this shouldn't be a required curriculum, of the psyche and moral fiber of inept thoughts.

Emmett Till's mother said that as she made her way down the street to the funeral home to see Emmett's body that she could smell death all the way down the street. I saw her talking about her son's death in a video from 2003. She said you could look at the side of his head and see all the way through his head. I was a 6 year-old black boy living in Harlem, NY when Emmett Till was lynched. I remember looking at pictures of his horribly mutilated body in a weekly black publication, Jet Magazine. Those images have stayed with me all my life (I'm now 72). Ms. Northey, I applaud your doing a segment on this very important part of American history. However I think it would have been better to have had at least one African-American mortician in the discussion. That the embalmer with the cap and beard had never heard of Emmett Till and the other gentleman had only a vague recollection of his story is very telling. I found it interesting that the gentleman (without a cap) stated that the purpose of caring for the dead is not to hide the effects of death (I'm paraphrasing). But isn't that just the point of embalming: to make someone who is dead look as life-like as possible for a short period of time so they can be viewed by family and friends before being buried or cremated? Please correct me if I'm mistaken about this. I enjoy watching your videos and find them very informative. Keep up the good work!
@KaritheMortician
@KaritheMortician 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing this! I truly debated having a black embalmer specifically but I went between the two sides. "She had a black embalmer just to tap into the race thing" or "the color of our skin does not change the methods we use to care for the body so a black embalmer perspective doesn't change depending on the race of the deceased." I would love to get to interview the funeral director who cared for him myself. I loved hearing the video of his talking but I want to know more of the behind the scenes secrets of taking care of him :) Embalming is really done for preservative for the viewing process. We don't want them to look alive, we want them to look not-dead, which is a difference. Restoring a bit to them is what we want to accomplish. I appreciate you sharing your story. I can't imagine the discussions that happened within your own home as a child when this and many other things happened.

One has to be embalmed or cremated as it's not legal to bury bodies without one of theses processes for public health reasons. That people can view them is anecdotal
@anthonyjyearwood816
@anthonyjyearwood816 2 жыл бұрын
@@shirleyashanti3031 You are mistaken. Embalming is generally not required by law except in very specific circumstances [public viewing of a body in a casket before a funeral and burial (quite common and hardly anecdotal), transporting a body across state lines, etc.] The Orthodox Jewish, Muslim and Bahai religions prohibit embalming and bury within 24 hrs after death. The issues of public health (sanitation and hygiene) are bogus. Cremation is not required by law as well. When I called the funeral home to pick up my deceased 101 year-old grandmother from a nursing home, I was asked for my permission to embalm her (which I gave since we were going to have a traditional funeral). Otherwise they could not legally perform the procedure without knowing what the family's wishes were beforehand.

@@KaritheMortician The African-American embalmer may have offered a more bological, scientific, and nomenclature specific detailed knowledge of the process you initially asked the guy with the beard, who seemed to know nothing about the profession. He stated that he wished that you had asked the initial simple question to the guy with the cap. At the outset these two choices in this podcast did not seem qualified to answer specific questions and simplified every question to speculation; clearly inadequate and frustrating listening to them. Finally, their not knowing about Emmett Till is an indictment of the generational and systemic white supremacist racism and the fascist police state, that continue to give comfort and protection to ignorance and white hate that still runs rampant across America in the 21st century.

Northern States (free States) did not acknowledge the Jim Crow South much, so many White Americans were far removed from the code of ethics created for Blacks until the Civil Rights Movement was televised. With recent events covered worldwide, all U.S. citizens are forced to witness persecutions going back to Emmett Till's lynching which was not covered by mainstream publications in '55 & there were many more lynchings before & after. Black History wasn't taught in U.S. schools until the 70's, & then it was taught only in Black schools. There are so many ugly stories. This story resonated through many decades.

Emmett Till’s story has haunted me for a very long time. The fact that I now have a son who is Emmett’s age, it hurts my heart more. Emmett was a child. He must have been so scared, and the pain he endured. His killers were not brought to justice, which is just inexcusable. It’s not lost on me, that my son, as a white kid, wouldn’t know the horror of being persecuted for his skin color, like Emmett was. Pictures of Emmett while he was alive, he was such a beautiful boy. I did go to a private Christian school, so perhaps it's an issue of public schools not teaching a lot of Black History. I have the utmost respect for Emmett's mother and I pray that Emmett is finally resting in peace.

It never ceases to amaze me, the amount of hate in others hearts, but it does hurt my own heart. Kari, I do have one question for you. When you said the funeral director could have kept his casket closed without allowing to show his Mother, is that a legal practice? Read the FBI files. Informants stated that there were a reported 10 white men and 2 black men associated with the brutal beating and murder of Emmet Till. He was reportedly beat with 45. Caliber pistols and hit atop of the head with an anvil. This was a horrific amount of violence this young man faced. He had a fractured and caved in skull, lost eye, chopped nose, majority of teeth knocked out, fractured wrists and a fractured left thigh bone. I can imagine what he was thinking on the back of that truck and in that shed once the beatings started. I was in junior high when I first saw the flashback of the Till story and his gruesome pictures in an 80's issue of The Jet Magazine. Those images haunted, terrified, and traumatized me as an adolescent in particular and as a black male in general my entire life. I'm currently 51 years of age and seeing his face still affects me as the first time I ever viewed it.

It’s the torture they did, to torture that child the way they did, knocking out his teeth, taking his eye; his eyes were beautiful even in the black & white pictures. The beating the pain he endured just hurts my soul that he went through that. & to have a child and even imagine something like that happening to them & live with the fact I couldn’t protect my child from that & just think why & how could someone do something so pure evil to a child… this is horrible. & I just pray there is heaven & he found peace after 💔 everyone talks about his mom being strong but living with that memory of what happened to her son was torture. During Mamie's testimony in court (as she wrote in her memoir) the Mississippi Sheriff showed her a picture of Emette that the county had taken as soon as they pulled him out of the river. Mamie said she nearly fainted seeing that pic - it was way worse and more horrid than what she saw at the funeral home. She said it didn't look human. Yet, what we the public saw at the funeral and in Jet Magazine was more digestible and palatable for viewing. Where is that picture that county officials took??

Parker Wheeler (Emmett's cousin who witnessed his abduction) said in an interview that when the FBI exumed his body in 2005, it looked the same as he did the day of his funeral. A retired FBI agent familiar with the case said that AA Rainer, (the funeral director who followed Mamie Till's open casket policy) did his job well - embalming Emette as he looked the same in that infamous photo. He did say they photographed his body extensively and the swelling on his face (caused by the water) went down a lot.

I've read Mamie Till's book "The Death of innocence" and watched all the video coverage and I am angry at the fact that these monsters had never been brought to Justice! I do know that God gets the last word and all those who are responsible have a heavy price to pay! ...FYI, according to the story, the mortician DID infact do some work on Emmett Till's body to look presentable for his funeral although Mamie insisted that he didn't. So we could only imagine how much MORE grotesque his body looked without the work done. God bless Emmett Till's family and may God bless his mom and his soul🙏🏾

Good afternoon johnell. You said; "the mortician DID infact do some work on Emmett Till's body to look presentable for his funeral although Mamie insisted that he didn't." Mamie Till did address that. There is so much more detail to this tragedy in books and print media than is found in documentaries on social media. She instructed the mortician in Chicago, A. A. Rayner, that nothing was done, cosmetically, to Emmett's face to prepare it for viewing ___________________ However, Mamie stated that Emmett's entire head was almost decapitated by the weight of a 75 pound gin fan tethered around Emmett's neck with barbed wire. It was necessary to, literally, attach his head to the body with a heavy twine. The heavy twine is visible under Emmett's left jaw in some of the photos.

It is just heartbreaking. How easily hate and lies can destroy lives. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. It is extremely sad that Emmett Till's memorial marker keeps being vandalized. Patrick Weems, executive director of the Emmett Till Memorial Commission said the fourth Till marker was placed in 2019 after previous ones have been vandalized. The first sign posted at the Tallahatchie River was stolen in 2008. The next sign was “shot up so badly that you couldn’t read any of the words,” Weems explained. “We replaced it last summer, and the it was shot up within 35 days of being up… This is the third time it’s been vandalized and this is our fourth marker.” According to Weems, the new marker is bulletproof and cost $10,000; it was donated by a sign maker out of Brooklyn, N.Y. He added there’s now security around the marker hopefully it’ll be the last sign the commission has to erect. Weems said that the Emmet Till Memorial Commission has also recently retained the land by the river and will start raising funds to create a permanent site for visitors to reflect. I do have a few questions. I remember reading somewhere that when Emmett Till was exhumed, a person who viewed his body said that he looked better in 2005 than he did in 1955 because the swelling had went down and folks were surprised that he was preserved so well. Could Emmett Till being sealed in that glass be the reason why he was preserved so well? What are the reasons do you think his body was so well preserved? Also, I read that in 1955 after Emmett Till was embalmed in Mississippi he was placed in lime. What does lime do to an embalmed body?

@@KaritheMortician It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance! I am so happy you answered back. I didn't think that you would. I told them to remove the lime so I could see his face." What she saw was what the world saw in Jet magazine in 1955. Till's face was battered beyond recognition. "His left eye was hanging down on his cheek, his nose was bashed in and it was if someone had taken an axe and chopped his face away from the rest of his head," his mother said in the film, recalling a scene she had probably told hundreds of times." Truly horribly sad what happened to Emmett. I am an American and it absolutely pains me to say that I had never heard of Emmett Till until I was 14 (I am now 15) and I stumbled upon his story by accident. I feel as though his story should be taught more in schools, especially because his death kick started the Civil Rights Movement. And the man who was with Mamie in the photo of Emmett’s body was her 3rd husband, Gene Mobley. Her first husband, Louis Till, Emmett’s father, was killed in war, in 1951, Mamie married again. Her second marriage only lasted 1 year before she and her 2nd husband Pink Bradley got divorced. Gene Mobley was either her boyfriend or fiancée at the time of Emmett’s murder. The two of them married in 1957 and stayed married until Gene’s death in 2000. Thank you so much for making this video. I believe that Emmett’s story should be told and people should know and remember the name Emmett Till. My mom’s parents were both alive at the time of his murder, even though they were both young, they both remember their parents talking about it, and hearing about it. Rest in Peace Emmett Louis Till and Mamie Till-Mobley. You will forever be remembered ❤

@@Imissyoulou "Where did you get that LIE from?" From Mamie Till Mobley's book "Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime That Changed America" Emmett Till's head was all but severed from his body by the weight of a 75 pound gin fan tethered to his body by barbed wire. Mamie Till Bradley said Emmett was simply unviewable in that condition. Chicago Mortician A. A. Rayner secured it with heavy twine. You can see the heavy twine in photos under Emmett's left jaw. Mr. Rayner did nothing cosmetically to prepare Emmett's body for viewing.

This case is close to my heart, so no judgement. But factually, He was raised by his Mother and Grandmother. Also his body was retouched by the funeral director in Chicago. He sewed up the hole in his head. His Mother did not ask for that, but, she thought the man did a beautiful job.

Thank you for this perspective.The guys honesty in not knowing about Emmitt Till is why history that shaped this country should be taught.The sincere response that you guys gave is the effect that Mrs Till Mobley wanted in hopes that racial hatred would cease.You,as morticians,see the damage done to bodies via horrific circumstances all the time.One could only imagine how morticians of that era were able to do their jobs,with out it effecting them in some way.Constant dead bodies as the result of lynchings ,castrations,bullet wounds,gouged eyes & etc was once so common,that I know it had to change many a heart of morticians that may have been filled with racial hatred themselves.Much respect to you all & the job that you do

@@tanieshadavis8740 You are correct. Emmett's body was exhumed by the FBI in order to verify his identity through mDNA and to determine his cause of death. After the autopsy was performed, and it was determined that he died of a gunshot wound, he was reinterred. His casket was placed in a warehouse with the intention of making a memorial in the cemetery. But that never happened.
