She lied because she was racist and was upset that when he gave her the money his hand touched hers. You think that woman really cared that Emmett was brutally beaten and killed? I don't think so.

@Fanta Graham when black people did try to take up arms and fight back they were slaughtered and it was covered up. Have you ever heard of the Colfax massacre? Probably not because it was covered up. Black people had the right to be scared. I'm white and I can admit that these were awful and unjust things and I hope that history never repeats itself.

you guys sure use the word black often. Its just making things worse. What if a person says white power or its white history month. Or the white awards. You would just hate them even more. These are ancestors of the white people today you are blaming . Yes this lady should go to jail. I still see white people hating black people and it makes me sick. Goes both ways. so please think about it.

I live in Europe. I only recently heard about this atrocity. It left me shaken to my core. I'm white. I don't see that as a badge of honour. It made me cry to see what was done to that poor boy, just because he was black. I fear that racism is on the rise again in the US, although it has never stopped. Racism has been approved by all the vile Republicans who have allowed their fake leader, Donald Trump, to promote it. I wish I had an answer. Here, we can deal with them in the courts because it is against the law to discriminate against somebody because of their race. We don't have white or black areas. We have a multicultural society. Sure, there are racists here but they are in the minority. Our schools are multicultural.

She paid the price of lying. You may not seen it on the outside but you don't know what goes on in her mind. I pray she repented and asked God to forgive her. Listen to what God told Emmett's mother. It is on You.Tube. God spoke to her b/c she wanted to die when her only child was killed. God told her to go out and work in His Vineyard. She became a teacher. God told her He would take care of the white men who killed her son. He is the Judge and the Jury. He told her not to hate. Why? God said it would poison her insides and she would get sick and die. That is what hate and unforgiveness does.

That statement is so true. You cannot escape being haunted by your sins. God will see to that! I am a white woman who has lived in the south all my life and I am horrified the way black people have been treated in this country. My children know this history and these stories, not because they were taught in school, but because my husband and I made sure they knew. Hatred is an evil that can easily spread if kept unchecked. Jesus told us to love everyone, even our enemies. Loving is not just tolerating. Love is what you feel for your own child. I pray we will all seek to follow the path of love. It is the only way to overcome evil in this world. This is the greatest commandment. Jesus taught it. Martin Luther King lived it. I witnessed it. It is my goal in life to obey it.

I wasn't raised to hate, but my level of distrust has always been there. I am in my early 60's now, and have had white friends over the years; but can't say if I really trusted how they felt about Black people. When will the "N" word show itself. Have you ever used it. Her husband owned the store and when he heard of Till whistling at his wife, he and his friends found Till and drowned him in a river, with weights tied to his ankles. The body was found days later, but Till’s mother insisted on an open casket. These photos of him in the casket really shook people worldwide.

Reverend Wright who identified young Emmet's murderer, in court, and Mamie Till really should never be forgotten. The State of Mississippi owes them a debt of gratitude for standing up for the rule of law, and helping to raise the entire country's awareness of how many Americans had no protection from it. These heroes of the Civil Rights movement, contributed immeasurably to the creation of a safer and more equitable country with enforceable laws. More must be done, and honoring our country's real heroes is a part of that.

In the historical context racism was deeply ingrained in southern culture. She was indoctrinated in the way of white supremacists. She was angered because she was taught to feel superior and that is reflected in her behaviour, she was simmering with hate which led to the lie. She has probably felt deep remorse for her actions over the course of time; at least I would hope so. It doesn't excuse the lie but if this story helps others to challenge their beliefs and effect change it becomes a testimony of good triumphing over wickedness.

It was very easy for those white men & women back then as well as today too allow hate and evil to fill their hearts. It's easy when all one has to do! is imagine that another Human Being; is less than Human; taught and trained that another race is below that of a dog, a cat, or even a rat, so low that the ignorance in them would assign an entire race of people a certain percentage less than 100% Human. We Still see it today" so many people devalue, Human Life and or put more value And prefer a pet over another Human-Being, even to the degree that they Title themselves as a parent to an animal. Some people would rather save a life of an animal than that of a human child/being. "However" we ask the questions what were those men thinking as, they tortured, brutalized, cursed, spat on, dug-into his body with every weapon at their disposal? {Noting!} They thought he's not Human; why? Because his skin is darker than ours, plus we have been taught this evil and this Demonic level of hatred from our forefathers, out of false fears, jealousy, ignorance, and just good old fashioned southern blind hatred just because! Now listening to this story and other details, I now believe that the young man, didn't even whistle; they just needed a reason, any reason, to unleash the deep down Demonic; hatred on this child. You cannot put it pass them; that the whole situation was conjured up? Especially when he had been instructed how to act away from Home; because of familiar things that were happening in his own state...like I said any reason would suffice! "But" the main reason: Because He; was Black" That's the true and real reasons, And for many, that's good enough for a ignorant, insecure, jealous, and hateful, person/people to act out.."It Doesn't Take Much."

NikkiHurdTheGreat I think his point was (and it is a valid point) that Chicago was also a very segregated city, as many other books and documentaries attest. On a certain level, he’s right. Emmett Till would have had a basic understanding of white antipathy. But in the South, unlike the North, blacks didn’t have the protection of law and were expected to defer to whites no matter what. I think the historian in him was getting the better of him; several times he seemed to veer from the interview in an attempt to get into some obscure facts, like the fact that Chicago was (and is) more segregated than most of the South in ways.

I don’t give any credit to anything Timothy Tyson has to say. He met with Carolyn Bryant and her daughter-in-law for one reason, such was to discuss the publication of her “memoir.” To make a long story short, her memoir was unpublishable, so he agreed to archive it, and any discussion they had about her part in Emmett’s death amounted to nothing. I believe He fabricated her remorseful comments, as well as her recantation. And for those who keep asking why Carolyn Bryant hasn’t been held accountable for lying, I will explain: The case was reopened again in 2017, when Tyson’s book detailing her recantation came out. But he did not document anything she said. He didn’t transcribe her recantation, and he didn’t record it. When the fbi interviewed Carolyn, she denied that she ever told Tyson she lied. And her daughter-in-late also denied it. That’s why they closed the case and didn’t charge her with anything. There are one of two reasons as to why he didn’t document her recantation : she never recanted, or she did recant, but he didn’t want to produce any evidence that could be used against her legally, so he just took a mental note of what she said for his book. I also don’t doubt that Carolyn received some sort of financial compensation from this book. Regardless, we don’t need information from Timothy Tyson or Carolyn Bryant to know that she lied. If you study the case, witnesses who were present in the store have said that he did nothing more than barely touch her hand as he gave her his money and whistled as she left the store. He didn’t ask her for a date. He didn’t grab her wrist. He didn’t chase her around the store and grab her by the waist. He didn’t make obscene comments. Her own sister-in-law said she was a liar who made it up because she was tired of running the store by herself and felt that her husband would be home more often to help if she came up with a “wild story” about being harassed by a black man.

Great comment, Michael!!! I bought this guy's book to see that Carolyn Bryant finally told the truth about the incident and hopefully would apologize to the Till family. This book ended up being a "mish mash" of everything I've ever read about Emmett! In the back of my mind, I wondered why she was recanting her story now after all of this time. I thought maybe she was trying to "get right with God" Whatever the case, I'm disappointed and I hate I dropped $20 on his book!!
