(Am at work, will come back later to elaborate) I love how his character is written. He’s a consummate professional, both to the other characters and to you. It takes a lot to rattle him. Even when he gets upset (like with the Racist Lorry Driver), he is calm and, above all, professional. It’s like his profession is a protective barrier between him and the world, just like his thick glasses. So when you get little glimpses of his history or personality, like his car hobby or how he hates pinball and loves speedfreaks radio, it’s really charming. Like he’s becoming friends with Harry, so he lets his personality out a little. I have no explanation for how he puts up with most of the stuff you can make Harry do. My theory is that it’s a mix of relying on that barrier of professionalism to try and use the makeshift policing system that is the RCM to make their crappy world a tiny bit better because no one else will (or at least not any worse than it already is) and a whole lot of “I can fix him” energy.

@@kathrynmyrick1739 Right. Theres also this...fraternal Brotherhood feel to the relationship (in a good way, not a corruption way, although...theres a little bit of that too) where kim understands that the job is really rough and the situation is dangerous and their authority is tenuous and he just wants to help his fellow officer resolve a bad situation as best they can...Non fanatical duty and loyalty.

Eder from POE has to be my favorite companion out of any game in the past 10 years or so. He's just...such a bro. It's hard to explain. But the way he is written and voiced is so intricate, so deliberate. He has a very subtle, but very believable character development arc over the course of two games. He's often very conflicted about life, and he turns to you for answers. Otherwise it feels like he's a fairly closed in person, very melancholic. And when you need him - he's always there for you, ready to provide a much needed perspective on what is happening. He just feels like a very reliable, trustworthy friend.

Morrigan from Dragon Age: Origins. Tragic without being a victim, seductive without being easy, conflicted but determined, and ultimately falls just short of the redemption you are lead to believe is inevitable. Witty, abrasive, powerful, conflicted and charismatic, the perfect companion. Also brilliantly performed by Claudia Black. The ultimate "one that got away" (depending on choices and dlc) with some belated, unexpected and potentially touching closure 2 games later in Inquisition. My favourite companion by a long shot, the anti-waifu.

I remember noithing else from that game, but I remember Morrigan down to the correct spelling of her name. One of the best written side characters in video games, and a good example of how to write good female characters (which only seems to be possible when you're not trying to make a point).

SPOILERS Following Morrigan into the portal at the end of the DA:O DLC and talking to her in inquisition afterward is the perfect closure. She seemed to long for a fairly normal life, and no matter how briefly, she got to have the loving and tender life she never thought possible or that she deserved. Morrigan forever.

I'm playing DA: Origins atm. And the only thing I knew about this game/franchise before, was that there is this one npc called Morrigan which has a truly unique personality. And after playing the game for a while now (am in the Circle of Magi Tower atm) I truly can say that this is by far the best written companion in DA:O. I like the conversations between Morri and Alis and Leyla so much. And the game explains why she is how she is in a cool and reasonable way. But besides of her, the other chars aren't that great. Alistair is good. Leylana, Sten and Wynne are trash. Shale is soso. That's my roster atm.

The core team in Planescape: Torment (Morte, Anna, Falls-from-Grace and Dak'kon) had set the bar in NPC character development very high, and so all characters that have followed since have been written to the best of the writers' abilities trying to match that level of exposition, motivation, drive and also "evolution" through their character arcs. i.e. In PST it wasn't only interesting to speak to those characters in detail to +x to AC or whatever (As a game-mechanic) - but also because they lent incredible depth to the plot and your own character arc.

Your description of Blackwall made me think of Mordin Solus. The Mass Effect Trilogy is probably my favorite game/series of all time. And Mordin really feels like he's also just trying to right the wrongs of his past as well. You find him in the clinic just trying to save people, through both medical knowledge and with the business end of a gun when the gangs come calling. Playing through, you find out about his involvement with creating the genophage, and realize that everything he does is about his guilt about what he did to the krogan. Finally culminating with his sacrifice to reverse the genophage. I'm convinced that you can make any true Mass Effect fan cry with the phrase "Had to be me. Someone else might've gotten it wrong." It still makes me tear up just thinking about it.

I like Alistair. To me he is a great role model, a far more complex character than he ever gets credit for and one of a very select group of companions who you can actually see as a friend in the real world (I mean, we all love Garrus, and Shepard can deal with him - but for reality, he's rather violent, unpredictable and rough). Alistair genuinely cares about other people yet he doesn't care what others think of him. Morrigan and her incessant bullying never really gets to him and he doesn't mind being called stupid or a bastard, even if only half of that is actually true. He is still a protector but without the toxicity of performative masculinity. He isn't afraid of being emotionally vulnerable and honest about his fears, but when it's you who is in a tough position, he will shield you and try to make you feel better. In a world without a Blight, you could totally see him in a job that's useful to society, because being a warrior is not his calling because he wants to kill things, but the role that is needed the most in his home nation. When the most needed thing is instead a king, he becomes that. Also, he's just hilarious. It's ironic, because they clearly tried for Varric to fill the same role (the permanent canon companion who has charisma, wit and an integral connection to the story), but with Varric there was just too much "look how great he is". Part of that can be excused with DA2's framing, but he always seemed to polished to me, never quite vulnerable or with reasonable flaws.

Just a solid guy who kind of snubs the general idea of what a fighter is supposed to be by being extremely mellow and easy-going. The voice acting helps with that a whole lot too. And you get to see him question his faith during both games which makes for a pretty neat character arc. There is that kind of abrupt end to his personal quest in Deadfire though, feels almost unfinished. I also like Viconia in Baldur's Gate II. Initially because she lets the player get a look at what Drow are and how their society works, and then because she escapes all that and tries to make it on her own in the hostile environment that is the surface world, but without turning into a character that is just simplistically good like Nathyrra who is your Drow companion in Hordes of the Underdark.

She also challenges the player's decisions with her own reasons rather than simple opposition (looking at you, Council). I've just on on your list in fact : Varrick. Otherwise my choices are totally different and will included Morrigan, Merril, Aewin, Areashulae, Linzy, Thane Krios, Imoen, Yennefer of Vengerberg (well a bit apart as it's at first a novel character), Knock knock, Minsc (and of course Boo), Siora and the best ever Tali Zorah

Saw Garrus come from a mile away :) He's your bro. I was surprised you didn't mention Eder. Great video. Ty for sharing.

On the subject of Dragon Age, I really like Leliana. Something about priest-turned-spy that I love.

Two that come to mind for me are Morrigan from DA and M'rissi, a mod companion for Skyrim. The very first time we meet Morrigan in DA: Origins just chills me every time I play the game. Claudia Black's voice and the slow decent from the upper level only to walk right past you (showing she in no way sees you as a threat) was just perfect. M'rissi's voice actress (the original, not the 2nd choice) was perfect for that adorable but extremely tragic companion character in Skyrim. In this case, tragic is almost an understatement as her back story is one of the darkest, most heart wrenching tales I've experienced in a game.

Personally offended for not including Minsc and Boo in this list. 😝 Anyway, your videos bring me a lot of nostalgia from playing crpgs in the early 2000s, I'm even considering playing Baldur's Gate remasters in the near future. I really appreciate the your content! :)

Since everyone is gonna throw out their favorites I need to bring up Christine from Fallout New Vegas Dead Money. She is very interconnected to the game and other expansions if you look for it but mostly what stuck with me was how you interact with her. She was made mute and brain damaged, so she cannot speak or write, or use any other type of language based communication. The only way you can communicate with her is through a series of skill checks based on her miming things and you understanding them. And despite that difficulty you can form a pretty deep relationship with her, and the reason why she was made mute and such was an amazing revelation. It stood out to me so much. She was such a unique companion that I have to bring her up.

The fact that you led with Morte from Planescape: Torment, one of the best, if not THE BEST, isometric RPGs ever created, makes you a winner in my mind. He is who I immediately thought of when I saw the video's title. The fact is that MANY of the companions in Planescape would qualify, but Morte is a particular kind of special.

Alistair from DAO was a fantastic character as well. Seemingly generic and bland but turns out to be both a complex and multidimensional human being and also potentially has a complex role to play in the events of the world

I'll always have a spot in my heart for Fawkes. Lighting people up with that laser Gatling gun from a mile away while I look around confused. Also, while not traditional companions definitely the Arbiter from Halo 3 or any Marines in Halo 1-3. Or Scorch.

It's funny you said Balthier, as he was originally supposed to be the main protagonist. It was scrapped during production for the younger Vann. The developers didn't feel younger gamers could relate to the older Balthier.

I am once again asking you to review Geneforge Also yeah, companions are one of those things where it's hard to pick favorites. They tend to fall into "I love this character", "I hate this character", or worst of all "This character is boring and I don't care" in general.

So happy you included Deekin! He's the best! (My love for Nathyrra will never die; and Sharwyn, Linu, and Daelen will always have a place in my heart; but Deekin is still the best. Xanos and Valen are cool, too, I guess. Boddyknock was robbed in the sequels. Probably by Tommy, the jerk. [I still enjoy Tommy.] Grimgnaw. Well. I always left him behind for a reason (even if I finished his dumb quests, stupid completionism).) (Also YouKnowWho from the last chapter of Hordes of the Underdark that I am not describing for spoiler reasons. That one is also top NWN companion.)

Great choices but since I haven't played PoE2 my list would include Morrigan (DA:O). Most likely due to the fact I've had a crush on Claudia Black ever since Farscape

Strong list, Balthier at number one is a surprisingly strong choice, also glad to see Deekin get some love, very underrated character. For me personally i'd include (in no particular order) Durance - PoE Jahiera - BG 1/2/3 Morrigan - DA:O Bastila - KotOR HK-47 - KotOR Auron - FF10 Although frankly the entire cast of BG3 could find itself up there as well

Sarevok from TOB was one of my favorites too. Esp after all the baggage your MC and him have , getting him to join your party and maybe even change alignment if you played your cards right.

Old video but I really like Hiravias from PoE, his questline isn't my favourite (that probably goes to Durance) but I love his conflict with the Staelgar transformation and his change to being more of a Wael follower in my playthrough. His dialogue with you and Sagani are also a lot of fun.

No Sten of the Beresaad? He is probably my favourite companion in all of RPG gaming. The parables, the subtle humour, his weird customs... It's the only time I felt I was learning when talking to someone in a video game.

Glad to see Mercy make the list, she is my favorite in that game, and Jahan is awesome too. Can't agree with Kreia as I can't stand her but I see why you like her. Garrick is second to Wrex for me but I just love the Krogan. My list would also have Gobbet from Shadowrun Hong Kong, Valerie from Kingmaker, Wenduag from Wotr, HK-97 from KOTOR and Neera from BGEE.

2:30 This is more of a personal observation on the game than Kreia herself, but something I’ve always liked about KOTOR2 is that, in a sense, you can understand what Kreia’s talking about - trying not to become overreliant on the Force and all - through gameplay. Back in KOTOR1, Sentinels seem to be the weakest class choice simply because skills aren’t all that helpful throughout the game. You can basically just rely on your party members to handle doors, or computers, or etc etc, while you just focus on being a super-wizard or something. There aren’t many (or maybe *any*) skill checks in dialogue, they rarely do anything to enhance or expedite quests, so there isn’t a super-duper-huge amount they can help a CHARNAME with. KOTOR2, on the other hand, has truckloads and truckloads of skill checks, on the overworld and in dialogue options, and they do a lot to add flavor or enhance the quests and stories being told. That makes Sentinels just as viable as the other two classes… probably even better, if I’m being honest. And the Sentinel’s whole style is that of non-Force skills; the very thing that Kreia is nudging you towards.
