Road to the Arctic Ocean, Driving the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk | Go North Ep 12
This episode chronicles our trip up the Dempster Highway and the new Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway that makes it to the Arctic Ocean in Canada.
Check out the associated blog post on our website here -
Road to the Arctic Ocean - Driving the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk:
www.mortonsont...
The journey starts out at the beginning of the highway in the Yukon territory just south of Dawson City. From here the highway winds through multiple mountain ranges, along rivers and streams, across tundra and flat plains and the massive Mackenzie River delta.
We made stops at Tombstone Territorial Park, Eagle Plains, Fort McPhearson and Inuviuk before making it to Tuktoyaktuk.
The road was generally in good condition when we drove it, but it's very long, dusty in dry weather or muddy in wet and has very limited services, so good vehicle condition and tires are a must. This road traverses some of the most remote land accessible by vehicles in North America.
The Dempster Highway is a popular run for capable RV's, adventure cycles, and overland vehicles, but most any vehicle can make it. We spent almost 3 weeks camping and exploring this road and loved every minute of it.
This episode we take the truck camper as far north as you can drive in Canada on the dempster highway through Inuvik all the way to the arctic ocean and the town of Tuktoyaktuk.

Beautiful video presentation and production. We will be headed to Tuktoyaktuk next year. We would like to ask you about your drone photography. We are American citizens. We both have the FAA UAV Licenses. However, we were told that only Canadian citizens as of June 2019 can legally fly a UAV (drone) in Canadian Airspace (CA does not recognize US Certifications) and that we can not even bring into Canada our UAV (It will be seized) . We will also be going to Alaska (where we can legally fly) but since Canada Authorities told us we can not bring our US Licensed/Registered UAV into Canada, Alaska UAV use won't happen. Canada reformed their UAV laws dramatically. What we would like to know is how (from whom) you received permission to fly your UAV for your arial photography. Thanks. Happy Trails and Safe Travels. All the best.

@@mjmohnHi MJ - actually, not even Canadian citizens can fly drones in certain areas. And, other areas are just off limits, which can lead to hefty fines. The new regulation came into effect June 2019, so it is not surprising that there is a lot of confusion. Here’s a step-by-step (with links) that will help you stay safe, and ensure the safety of others, including property. 1) Your drone weight & size: this new regulation requires that drones have certain weight and size, unless you have special permission to fly a different drone (used for specialized work). You should look at the specs of your machine and see if it is compliant with the new requirement. Alternatively, you can also visit the manufacturer’s website. If you click the following link, it will take you to DJI’s Newsroom page: www.dji.com/newsroom/news/dji-drones-meet-new-transport-canada-requirements-for-flight-near-people 2) Location: even if you have a permit to fly a drone in Canada, it does not mean that you can fly it anywhere. For instance, restricted areas are just that: restricted, and you should know what these are. The following link from Transport Canada will help you better understand these new rules (first link), and where you can fly one by using the interactive map (second link): www.tc.gc.ca/en/services/aviation/drone-safety.html nrc.canada.ca/en/drone-tool/ You should also check the NAV Canada NOTAMs portal for any scheduled events as this will restrict the use of your drone in that area: flightplanning.navcanada.ca/cgi-bin/CreePage.pl?Langue=anglais&NoSession=&Page=Fore-obs%2Fnotam&TypeDoc=html And, keep in mind that Parks Canada does not allow drones (e.g. Banff, Lake Louise, etc.). You should also check with each Provincial Park before you fly your drone. Also, keep in mind that there is a section of the Dempster Highway that is used for emergency landing (air ambulance). This is at Km124 (Government airstrip). You will see signs on the road, on both sides, as you approach it. This means you cannot stop your vehicle here, unless it is an emergency, or fly a drone. Consider this area as an airport no-fly zone. 3) Certificate: it is true that you must have a Canadian-issued certificate to fly your drone in Canada (Special Flight Operations Certificate). I would recommend that you visit the following link for further details: Foreign pilots (US included): coastal-drone-academy.thinkific.com/courses/RPAS-basic-FP Hope this helps. 😊 Disclaimer: please note that I am not in any way associated with any of the companies or institutions mentioned in this posting.

On the way back I was the guy whom started getting tired of the bugs, constant daylight, and rain we experienced four straight days. Cooking food became very tough as well. If at all. This was the very reason we bought our first Lance truck camper. The mosquito mobile hotel suite!!! 1176!

Also I don't see any cracks in your windshield did you make it all that way without a cracked? Lsstly I bought I brought a VIAIR AIR PUMP based on your recommendation it's build very well.

"...called these lands home for thousands of years." Not entirely true. The Inuit were a relatively recent arrival in the Arctic, displacing the peaceful Dorset peoples and stealing their land. They've only lived in the area for about one thousand years. To put it into perspective, the Vikings were in Greenland before the Inuit were.

You have really thrilled me with this video by reminding me of all of the beauty I saw when I was up there. There are many things I want to say, but I'll stick to two main points. 1) I LOVE how you explained how the road is affecting the beautiful people of Tuktoyaktuk and how we need to tread carefully and respectfully. 2) Your truck camper is THE way to go I think because of the truck's suspension softening the blow to the camper. The road itself is not that bad in a vehicle, but put something tagging along in the back and having it bounce down the road after you, I believe it takes more of a beating. In any case, you gave me shivers of delight reliving my short time up there. Thank you!

Did you have the Truma Combi installed in the camper? Excellent narration & enunciation. Very entertaining, informative, & a video I will want to watch again & again. I've read the RV gear section that I found in the "Description" 1. What kind of Tires did you have? 2. Haven't seen anything on the kind of food you carried with you, prepared, & ate. 3. Did you carry a frig/freezer inside your Truck, something in addition to the unit inside the camper? 4. Is the Lance Truck Camper rated for 4-Seasons? 5. I watched your video showing the build-out of your Camper which answered my unasked questions about Water Purification. 6. Truma Vario Furnace & Truma Aquago retrofitted answered all my Truma Questions. Did the Truma FURNACE live up to your expectations? 7. How much, how many propane tanks did you have with you during the trip & was it sufficient?

Did it in June of 2018 on our Adventure Motorcycles. 7 of us. Got snowed on coming back from Tuk on June 8th and two of the guys got to visit the well-equipped Inuvik medical center, then the airport there for flights back. Coming back down the Dempster which had several very icy and very wet places from the snowstorm was another adventure. You guys did a lot more in-depth exploring and meeting people and I really enjoyed seeing much more of the treck than I remember. With only two of you, you could take the time to stop longer and get more in-depth without worrying about what everybody else wanted to do. Loved it!! And also your other entertaining and informative vlogs. I'm glad you did the work (and it really is!) to prepare them so well. Jim.

Loved this video (actually all of your videos). We have been following you and Drivin and Vibn for several years. We are originally from Ontario Canada, but in July 2019 we drove out to Winter Harbour, BC and we are work camping here. Winter Harbour is located on the North West side of Vancouver Island. On your way back south, if you are near here, stop in and we show you the area!

I love your videos. Glad to know there are a lot of boondocking opportunities along the Dempster highway. I've only been as far as the artic circle sign because of money. I hope to go all the way to the artic ocean sometime. Do you guys know if there are any boondocking opportunities in Tuktoyaktuk?

Loved this episode ❤️ We have driven the trip to Dawson and “ over the top” many times . Made the trip to Inuvik in 2012. If COVID-19 passes, our plans are for Tuk this summer. My wish is to celebrate my 70 th birthday in Dawson City. We did the Arctic Ocean trip on the Dalton Highway to Deadhorse in 2015 and that was another fabulous adventure. We tow a 28 foot Wildcat all season travel trailer. Travel safe!

Loved this! I would love to make this journey but think I'd have to wear a full mesh tent around me as the mosquitos love me and make me react in painful, swollen ways. Thank you!

Going to THE end of the road. Cool!- saw you briefly at the salton sea- in February showed you my inspired lithium battery inverter system. How far north you have traveled!-You 2 are unique and inspiring to others to push the boundaries and explore. Hey maybe rv Europe next for a year? Those porcupines that crawled up underneath and started biting into your wiring-who- could have anticipated that?-lol

In June 2019 I conquered the Dempster. Drove the new Inuvik-Tuk highway to Tuk. Stopped at the Arctic Ocean. Waded in and splashed like a little kid in the bathtub. Drove back to Alaska, conquered the Dalton. Stopped at Prudhoe Bay, took another dip but got stuck by the muck. Had to be rescued by fellow tourists. In short, the greatest travel adventure of my life.

I have one year to retirement, My wife and I will do this as we will be 60/58.I have the truck... now it is deciding on a fifth wheel or camper (slide in). I think a camper would be the way to go on a trip like this as a fifth wheel on the ferry?? plus moveability issues. If you dont mind me asking...What was the fuel bill ? Cheers from manitouwadge ontario (lake superior north country). We enjoyed the video very much..give the dogs a ..good boy for us...lol

Do you meet John Steen, the local tire changer I met to repair a flat tire. While he fixed my tire, I visited his wife's food truck, Grandma's Kitchen, for lunch. Stay for a couple of hours and enjoyed a time of fellowship with him and fellow tourists. Hadn't planned to meet any local but the flat tire allowed me to meet John.

Each video gets better and better. I think you are great travellers. You walk softly and are humble. The scenery was fabulous. I felt like I was actually there with you. I learned a lot too. Very interesting things. Loved Elephant Rock. The mosquitos swarming around your wine glasses and the side mirrors on your truck. Those were some big ones. We call those B-52's up in Minnesota. They zoom in for the bite, hit, take a half pint before you've got time to sweat at them. LOL. That truck will clean up great. Whoa major dust. Loved your fur babies. Oh yeah that smoked fish looked good. Did the pooches get a little bite? 😀 Thank you for a lovely video. ❤🌹❤
