Performance by BLACKSTAR on the Dave Chappelle show. This was the one and only time they sing this song together. Real Hip Hop! Raw rap shit! Great sound quality, ENJOY :)

this one changed my life too. me and my lifelong buddy had always been in love with this show because it was easy to watch and funny to a kid with the corniness but also made me feel mature and connected with me through pop culture. here i was 9 or 10 no idea who mos def or talib kweli was and this performance marks the exact moment i thought maybe this guy dave wants to teach me and make me understand something just as much as he wants to make me laugh. Not only did i bob my head to the musicality and the skillful rhymes of these two legends but after the song a curious me had to hit google. “what is gaza strip and west bank?” “what was the the aids epidemic?” “why cant people get jobs?” Shouts out to mos def and talib kweli for invoking these thoughts in a young mind and shout out to dave for continuously educating me and introducing me to dope artists. (i was born in 2001 chappelle show had been off the air for some time by the time i was 10 but aired on late night comedy central and my friend had them on dvd. We both remembered our parents/siblings watching it when we were little so we hit that age and went “Hmmm what was that show??”)

The beauty of music (art in general) is that it lacks a statute of limitation. It can speak to many and even generations later, one can still go back and listen to it. Otherwise no one alive could claim a right to listen to Beethoven. Instead of putting down the younger generations for not being alive when these works of art we’re being created, how about we encourage them to listen to them without being patronising?

Man, it's so different from today. you'd never see something like this in a live proformace, ever. To many doing music, all they think about is a catchy rhythm, and a few bars are all you need to make a hit. Back then it was more about the words being said, I'm willing to bet not many people like the beat to this song, but the words hit harder because of it, plus there's a few versions of this song
