Peace at any cost is not peace. That said, yes, there are a few politicians at the edge of the political spectrum here in Germany who seem to argue for handing Putin a big chunk of Ukraine in exchange for peace. But the general consensus among the majority of the German public is a continuation of support for Ukraine. Also, Waganknecht is probably one of the most hated politicians in Germany, even before Schröder and Merkel. Some suspect that her party is receiving foreign financial support, something I can't imagine being true, or could it...? It's not clear what the AfD's policy really is on Ukraine. They're more a one-trick-pony, strong on stricter immigration laws and fast track deportation of failed asylum seekers but weak on everything else. All their other policies look like they've been quickly slapped onto their election campaign wagon without much thought.
@renemagritte8237Күн бұрын
I'm afraid I have to disagree. What the AfD's policy on Ukraine really is, depends on what an average AfD voter is ready to choose and accept as momentarily valid narrative. Fact is: there was a constant flow of Russian money towards AfD in the past and not too far past (Bystron scandal). We shouldn't be naive enough to believe there are no expectations concerning Image and narrative on Russian side. Russians are not stupid.
@Pippie5555Күн бұрын
Last year AfD members were caught receiving money from Russia.

Is the afd learning from their ancestral hero or simply trying the same thing and hoping for a different outcome? The conditions are fertile due to the weakness of Scholtz . They never really went away did they? The real failure lies in the opposition both in Germany and the US.

Nationwide the AfD doesn't even have 20% because basically it's the children of Eastern Germany who believe in the good in Russians. 80% of Germans don't which can also be seen in the aid for Ukraine. And weren't German and Polish farmers the ones who blocked motorways into Ukraine for months? So take a look at your own nose, bro...
@ZeeZeeCatКүн бұрын
Unfortunately, farmers in Polish history have never been deeply rooted in patriotism but rather their own perception of pragmatism (vide: conformism). But I can understand their motives and peculiar situation....When one is constantly trying to make ends meet and is not well-educated or fully aware of complex political factors, frustration can be directed at easy targets. They consistently fail to grasp the larger perspective, but who would be concerned when one is merely trying to survive? Of course, not all farmers are like that, but we have seen this phenomenon multiple times, especially since the era of the famous Andrzej Lepper. Farmers = protests in polish reality. Fewer people want to be farmers, those who are simply do not know other way or have no other prospects, having been in the business for generations.
@rg-cc5kgКүн бұрын
The AfD easily could get more (!) than 20% of votes, that is a danger. So is Sahra Wagenknecht, that Prada and Bulgari Stalinist. Still, with some likelihood Friedrich Merz will win the coming elections. And he is known to be a staunch supporter of Ukraine.

Being Polish and living in Germany since the 1980s I have finally figured out the German mentality in terms of Russia. It's based on both WW2 history and Cold War era. Especially the Eastern Germans are nostalgic about the former DDR (GDR) and still think it wasn't that bad living under Kremlin and communist rule, before the Fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. You have Germans such as these in both the AfD and Sahra Wagenknecht's BSW.
