Save your money. Even professional accordionists never use all the base buttons on a 120-base accordion -- 60 or at most 72 base accordions are cheaper and lighter and one made by a guality Italian or German company will sound every bit as good as the big, heavy, expensive accordions. FYI, I started playing at 8, started playing professionally at 12, and at 81, still perform at parties, restaurants, wineries, etc. I have owned a half dozen accordions, so I speak from long experience.

Holy smokes. I shipped a C/F melodeon to Martin this week for repairs, and now I see him in this video. I recognized his voice from our phone conversations. SMALL WORLD!

When it comes to playing Balkan national dances professional accoredeonists use Guerrini or Dallape accordeons with 11 or more switches that include clarinet, basson, piccolo, master, organ, harmonium, clarinet and basson, oboe, violin, violin clarinet and basson and soprano switches. Those accordeons usually have 120+ basses.

So what is the name of the two different types of accordions shown? The "wet" vs "dry" sound, surely there is a real name for each? THANKS!!

I would never recommend buying an accordion with a dry sound. Most people do not like that sound, they want the ' swinging' sound of an accordion, which is only reached uf you have more than one 8 reed. Many are willing to pay a bit more for that. Even my grandson of only 5 years old hears the difference!

Funny, I always liked more the dry sound. Even tho my accordions do have 3 clarinets, I usually use the harmonium register (basson + dry clarinet + picolo) as a master. I think it is because one of the styles of music I like the most uses dry accordions.

Smaller accordions are easier to handle physically. 48 bass is a good starter. At a certain point in your study they become limiting, and by then you probably know what you want in your next accordion.

As someone who wants to play serbo croat music the dry tuned sound is what I am lookig for and its nice to know that they are in abundance in the us where I live. Playing accordion at day. Conquering bosnia at night.

This video was extremely helpful. Without it I probably would’ve spent my money on a dry tuned accordion and gone years before I learned what I was missing. As a result of watching this, I knew exactly what I was looking for. Only problem, my local selection was terrible, and I wasn’t interested in making multiple two hour round trips to discover all the accordions were either crappy or out of my price range. There’s also the issue of being a beginner with an instrument and having the ‘performance anxiety’ of playing in a store, or just lack of experience to tell whether or not the instrument sounds good.

I've definitely learned something new, luckilly because I am in the UK, the most common accordion I have seen is the tipical steriotipical sound people associate with it, just like the one I saw yesterday, those are very great for streat musicians, a nice walk into town is always great when you hear those playing, especially when they play the songs that were written for that type of accordion, for instance, the northumberland waltz, throw in a tin wistle and other instruments and you can make it expressive

I used to live in B.C. I am so regretful I didn’t learn accordion since then. I now live in Toronto, I am very lucky that I could still find a accordion shop. I just found out I have the same accordion as the one in the video hahah. It is my first accordion and I like it very much!!!

I really like the cleaner accordion with less of the buzz or what it’s called. I have my kids accordion still and I use it as a portable piano when I’m walking around. It’s only in the natural scale. But now I know the difference between the honky one and the clean tone that’s something I learned here.
