The Moshulu is the world’s oldest and largest square-rigged sailing vessel still afloat. She is in fact the one and only restaurant venue on a Tall Ship today in the World. the Moshulu’s route to Australia took her around Cape Horn a remarkable 54 times without incident. On June 10, 1939, the very last grain race of square-rigged sailing ships between Australia and Europe before World War 2 was won by the Moshulu

Read “ The Last Grain Race “ by Eric Newby, his hilarious recounting of his time aboard Moshulu .

What a great channel. Information like this is not so easy to come by in my experience. Tall ships are a niche interest.

The" Grain Races" only existed in the media and the public's imagination. There was no real incentive for speed, the ship represented transport and free storage and cargoes often changed hands en route to Europe. Racing was expensive in gear and sails and Erickson ran his ships on very tight budgets and stood their insurance himself so extra expense was severely frowned on. Of course there were some good passages but in the main they were quite slow.

The crew saw the trips as races!

The Captains, offices & crews all knew when other ships departed & were keen to count the days taken to get home fully loaded. The kudos in having the fastest passage was indeed celebrated & crews looked for Captains to stack on sail & drive for home. The media merely picked up on the excitement & published lists that the sailors already had knowledge on.

I’m so glad that she wasn’t scraped or lost at sea, but still a bit of a sad end for such a magnificent grain ship. Yes I read (many times) “The Last Grain Race” my all time favorite sailing novel.

She had a better end that Herzogin Cecile. I believe she was wrecked off the south coast of England. Olivebank - never the luckiest of ships - was torpedoed.

My wife and I have been to the Moshulu a couple of times. It is very nice. If you are in Philly you should try it.

If memory serves, this was the ship that carried young Vito Corleone to America in Godfather II.

No, they just used the name. Wasn’t even painted even on a sailing ship.

Quite interesting - certainly enough to watch to the end but made difficult by the narration which sounds as though it was AI generated with lots of annoying pauses in the middle of sentences.

Thank you for your comment and interest in our channel. We would like to sound as great as Sir David Attenborough but due to some circumstances cannot afford it, but of course we are also interested in improving. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by the narration.

That's very kind of you, thank you very much! But we still realise that it's not an easy job, especially for free. If you really don't mind, we can give it a try. Please email us at olekkokh@gmail.com with how we can get in touch with you.
