One of my Mosins was shooting about a foot high at 100 yards. I just took some 12 gauge wire and stripped it. Then I took the insulation and placed it over the front sight post raising it up a bit. Now I'm dead on.

@FrontSideBus its not a problem, most of them have good bores, the ammo isnt highly corrosive, it just has corrosive salts in it, so most of rifles are fine, regular wear and tear does more to harm them than the salts

I love these old rifles. The first one that I bought was a 1943 with great rifling no pits in the barrel. Great shooter. Then at my local gun store they got crates of hex barrel Mosins. I found a 1935 hex with really Great rifling in it, again no pits. I went through about 30 of them before I decided on that one. With these old rifles I always take my bore light with me. The 7.62X54R is a very good cartridge. Keep up the very good vids hickok. Nice camera work John.

Hey hickok45, Watching your video, I noticed you had your rear sights set a 1m. I know shooting any kind of rifle isn't easy but I think you would do better if you set the rear sight to 3m. The Mosin was made to fire with the bayonet attached and has it's sights zeroed at 3m. Maybe in your freetime, you can try it out and see how it feels ^_^ love your vids and am a fan.

Thank you for doing another Mosin video! I actually bought my first (privately owned) rifle-a 1942 vintage M91/30 shortly after watching your first video with the Mosin. Mine has been upgraded a bit, turned down bolt and drilled and tapped for a proper scope. I also refinished the stock in Red Mahogany #225 so she's a real beauty now. Absolutely LOVE this rifle. My advice to new shooters of the Mosin....don't shoot it on a bench with the barrel bipod with no recoil pad....Lol.

a russian 1943 M91/30 was the first rifle ive ever purchased, howevr not the first ive shot. this is the funnest round i've had a chance to shoot. the lack of recoil shocked me at first as i was expecting to be thrown to the ground. instean i was greeted with a gentle push. i love everything about these rifles. even the sound it makes when fired. everything about the 91/30 is unique. and thats why i own one.

You're correct on the still in use cartridge - the 7.62x54R is used in their mid-range sniper rifles and squad medium machineguns - the PKM and its successors, and the Dragunov among others.

@Gungeek Yes, and that might mean 'use this sight for 100 meters', or it might mean 'zeroed in for 100 meters'. It's likely the first as a number of military weapons have sights like that. Look at an Uzi, which has sights labeled '100 meters' and '200 meters'. It's an aid to help you put the bullet on target at a certain distance. My Springfield has a ladder sight that has markings for under 100 yards out to 2800 yards.

I have a 1933 Hex, 1937 Laminated stock round model, and a 1942 round model that I sporterized with a Boyd`s Forest Camo stock and a 7 X 32 long eye relief scope. All 3 shoot amazingly good and the price of ammo can`t be beat. 440 rounds of Bulgarian silver tip ammo from Aim Surplus for under $80 a spam can plus shipping. Cheaper to shoot than a 9mm pistol!

They are really fun to shoot! I have a Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 made in 1933. I shoot mine at a local gun shop/indoor range. I shoot paper targets at 25 yards. The gun is completely reliable and simple and rugged. It's easy to clean, comfortable to handle and is pretty accurate. A great bargain at $89.95 online!

I just bought one of these about a week ago. There was so much crap (cosmoline and stuff) in the barrel that it took 2 hours and ~60 patches rammed down the barrel to get rid of it. The barrel was not pitted, though it was quite rough. I went outside, and put around 10 rounds through it, and it's accuracy quite surprised me. ~The Liberal Gun Nut~

I have one that just came in today, but I won't be picking it up until Wednesday. I requested a TULA Hex model. Hope that's what I got! Either way, I'll be happy as it was only $89.99 plus shipping. @maroth3 no weapons limits or caliber. Automatics require special licensing. You do NOT have to register long guns (shotguns and rifles) unless they fall under specific requirements. However, all pistols must be registered by the local, county, or state police whether you have a CPL or not... This is just for my state though. Different states vary. There is very little gun registration in this country

I have read the problem with this is the seat where the round rests inside the chamber get corrosion and had to be cleaned thoroughly. It can be done by yourself or by a gun smith. You may also need to break down the bolt and clean the ejector tab out. If you check out some more of the YT video's somebody has done a bolt break down to properly clean it out.

@MrXl250 Yes it is, Smith and Wesson patened and began producing the .22 short in 1857. The french tried to pull off an all-in-1 cartiage called the "bb cap" a couple years before the .22 short was created. But it nearly was not as good as Smith and Wesson's model.

The powder is notoriously slow burning and will make some impressive fireballs out of any of the shorter barreled versions, and sometimes even the long ones. Any cosmoline in the barrel would have been gone after the first shot (perhaps along with the barrel if it were clogged good enough). Mine makes a good flash even at full length with the surplus ammo as well, particularly the older Russian stuff (silver tips).

I've found that the 91/30 shoots more accurately at 100 yards with the bayonet attached. I've heard that they were manufactured to shoot with the bayonet attached and also found that mine shoots to the right without it attached. Just a tidbit in case you find yourself missing a lot. Of course this is with the iron sights. If you have a scope, you can easily correct your sights accordingly.

FYI hickok45 The 7.62x54R is still used in multiple rifles by the russian military. In particular: many machine guns (of both russian and chinese make) and the very feared SVD Dragunov (the Russian Sniper rifle). In short... you won't see this round disappear any time soon. And perhaps an aid to your shooting: the Mosin Nagant was notorious for being sighted low (and shooting high) at ranges within 100 to 150 yards.. Aim a little lower at these ranges-aim for the belt buckle for center mass.

Well that rather depends on the ammunition you're using. For example with S&B 180grs ammo and sights left at 100m, the POI evens out at 200m, with Wolf 150grs around 220-250. My suggestion is to shoot a couple of shots on paper to see where you're going, then everything will come instinctively and you'll obtain quite good groups. Remember this was meant to shoot at human sized targets!

Sometimes the simple cheap surplus bolt actions just can't be beat for fun plinking...I used to have an old Fr-8 mauser & RFI enfield lil .308 carbines and a .303 no. 1 that would shoot mild handloads into an inch or better at 100 yards...and surplus fodder into a couple inches...a lot of Enfields tighten up with the right powder and collet/ necksize only dies...lot of fun. mosin 91/30 (most common mosin, also longest and cheapest you'll find) run about $99 to $120 depending on where you live. Saw a comment saying a guy out in CA bought one for about $146 (don't quote me on that) out the door. Thats for a round receiver. Hex receivers are more expensive because they are slightly more rare. won't go into why, plenty of people out there can tell you. anyway hoped this helped.

Many people get on Mosin's for their supposed inaccuracy but that's partly because of the loose specs factories were given. @Gungeek How does what work? The long range accuracy? Quite a few of these old rifles are zeroed in at 500 to 600 yards. So, at 100 yards you have to hold sometimes as much as 8 inches low to hit something. Under the zero mark, hold low. Once past the zero range, start holding high.

@Sbowling1979 Maybe it's because of the corrosive ammo you shoot through it. I don't know if you clean right after shooting? That is a good idea when shooting surplus ammo, otherwise the corrosive salts have a field day on the barrel. Have you ever tried plain old Windex for cleaning your bore? It removes / neutralizes the corrosive salts. Douse the action and barrel in Windex, put hot water through the barrel to clean it out then use Hoppe's 9 and a pull through.

@biggunzcdb .303 ammo is a relic. You can easily find 7.62x54R, seeing as many major militaries (Russia's and China's included) still produce and use it. It's also more powerful. The Mosin and the SMLE are both very nice-looking, reliable, and accurate, but the Enfield is more of a collectible than a range piece.

i've been given a good argument that says don't use the sling. reason being, when you wrap that sling around your hand, you pull down on the handguard, which pulls down on the barrel. unless you sling up the exact same way every time (unlikely), you're gonna put a slightly different pressure point on the barrel every time... so while you could improve stability for practical accuracy, inherent accuracy of the rifle actually decreases.

Hey, with the clips, press the bottom of them into the little ridge directly in front of the bolt when it's pulled back, place your thumb near the back end of the top round, and lift the tip of the top round up a bit with your index finger, before pressing them all in. Just a bit of advice for the sake of knuckle skin :)

There's a local gunshop here in the Rock which has an old Mosin Nagant - it's been there for a long time.

I wish I wasn't limited to going to a range to shoot. The only place I can go to is 45 minutes away. I still haven't been able to shoot mine yet, I think I will wait for spring even though the weather is pretty mild right now.

Mine was also produced in 1941! What a great rifle; there's nothing like hearing that bolt rack....You almost make that rifle look like it's not a mile long :P

Going to the range today...wasn't sure if I was gonna take the mosin or the M590...waking up to this video made my choice a bit easier!

Love seeing the vintage rifles. It would be cool to see you with a STV-40 and a Gewehr 43 for the sake of rare WWII rifles.

the round receivers were stopped in the late thrities because they were more expensive and took more time to produce than the new receiver style

I have 4 mosins. They are great shooters. I can hit 500 yard steel pretty consistantly with iron sights and Yugo surplus. They are amazing weapons for the money. And each gun has its own unique history.

Wrong, the 7.62x54r is not the oldes military round still in service. The 7.5x55 swiss is two years older put into service in 1889, and it is still in service today making it the oldest military round still in use.
