I love this song! Back in the "world" I was struggling with the post Nam War dreams real bad. In 1971, I got into my Bonneville and drove away from my family on base. I popped a Motown 8-track tape in and this song came on. As the lyrics cut through my PTSD I was able to turn my car around and go back home. Again, that was in 1971. In 2023, my family and I are still "TOGETHER"💞

67 year old white male. Grew up in a multi racial town. Motown ruled, dominated and determined a ton of goodness. Everybody danced at every celebration. These ladies were exemplary and talented beyond measure. Can't think of another musical era with so many trail blazers and talented musicians!!!!!!! The list is endless. 4 Tops, The Temptations, Barry Gordy, Supremes, Smokey, Marvin , and on it goes. I am grateful for their talents all these years later......

My mother sung this song to me in July 1970 when my great-grandmother died. I remember looking at her with tears streaming down my 9 year old face asking her was she sure I’d see granny again. Smiling she said yes. When my father died some years later, l dusted it off and sung it to my inconsolable mother. She remembered what she told me. She smiled. Years later l dusted it off a final time and had it sung at my mother’s funeral. 😔 This is the first time I’ve allowed my self to listen to in 22 years. Still hurts. So, so sad. -RIP Mama

The faint encouraging male voice singing ad-lib background vocals is Johnny Bristol, one of the three songwriters who wrote the lyrics and musical score. He had previously recorded the song under a different label and during Diana's session with Motown, Barry Gordy sequestered Johnny into the studio to prompt Diana to sing on point and to assist in acquiring the mood and feel that he intended the song to hold. Originally his vocals were to be dubbed out for the final cut, but in the end Gordy felt that leaving them in added depth and a reinforcing echo harmony that complimented Diana's vocals instead of distracting from them.
@JonnyQ3585 жыл бұрын
I believe Mr Gordy was right..And it also helped to establish the fact the song was about a requited love which still had a glimmer of hope..Not the idea the group was breaking up as many at first believed..To the contrary even though Ross had departed the group the Supreme's now lead by Jeane Terrell continued to have great success on the charts scoring several more top ten hits..

I love Johnny Bristol’s subtle well timed contributions in the background of this awesome tune. This one and “Reflections” are two of my favorites, have been since the 60’s when I first heard them!
