“No license to fly...” As a child I would look at ultralights and homebuilts as the promise of freedom. No license, just go. Now decades later as a commercial helicopter pilot with unrestricted ATP licenses in 5 countries, I can unequivocally say it’s a terrible idea. Go, buy and build an ultralight plane or helicopter. But please, for the love of Zeus... get a god damned private license so you have some clue of what you’re doing up here.

I'm am aircraft mechanic and I do composite work as well. At 12:37 min while showing your swash plate demo I noticed what looks like reinforcing patches in your upper rotor shaft torque box on the aft wall that are roughly laid up and obviously not vacuum bagged down. They weren't even sanded smoothe! I have to say that I'm surprised that you're using a weaker joint like that and cutting corners by using "backyard" building techniques. I won't even mention the use of fiberglass over carbon fiber!

Some constructive criticsm, kindly meant (and from experience). This is a little hard to watch but you can vastly improve it by developing your camera work. Essentially, don't use Autofocus and don't keep the camera recording whilst you are reframing a shot. Autofocus relies on the camera guessing what should be in foucus - and often getting it wrong. Moving the camera from one thing to another whilst shooting is nauseating for the viewer. For example, when shooting the completed machines in the hangar, either hold the camera steady and walk in a straight line (a tracking shot) or stop recording whilst you reposition to the next machine (an in-camera cut). Good luck! Bob. PPL(A) and (H).

@@scottwillis5434 I think the Rotorways are classified as an experimental helicopter, so they still have to have an airworthiness certificate and you have to have a license. Some helicopters are small enough to be classified as ultralights and require neither. The issue with freedom is that some people are going to be dumb and abuse it.
@adamr92154 жыл бұрын
License and training are two different things. Most brands of ultralight aircraft offer training. Even as a licensed pilot, you have to have type training (training in the aircraft you are going to fly) before you can fly it. Just because you have a pilots license and have some time in a C152 doesn’t mean you can jump into a P51 Mustang and fly it around. And, our government has been known to give licenses to people who don’t have training, so there is always that to consider.

While I am a licensed private pilot, I like the idea of folk flying, regardless of experience. I learned to hang glide by myself and taught myself paraglding, later as well. Not one mishap or accident. Why? Maybe because I use common sense when I do things for the first time?
