My mom bought me a Mossberg semiautomatic in 1945 when we moved to the Iowa farm. I left it on the farm when we moved to CA. In 1951 I went to Montgomery Wards to buy another, it wasn’t in stock I ended up with a bolt action. Both my old Mossbergs had stock fed ammo. Now I’m not sure what models or numbers I had.
@capthal-rs9mq11 ай бұрын
The first model was most likely 51. The 151 did not come out until around 1948. If you bought a gun from Montgomery Wards, it is most likely had a Wards model number. Even though the gun most likely was made by Mossberg. Back in those days, Mossberg made guns for a number of different stores. WARDS, Sears, Spiegel, ect.. Good luck. Capt Hal

Again Thanks for your help on the stock, what should i use to clean up barrel and sights? i don't want to screw this vintage gun up.
@capthal-rs9mq Жыл бұрын
There are a lot of different cleaners for gun barrel. Not seeing the gun it is hard for me to tell you what to do. If your finish is only minor deterioration some people don't want to change it. But you have minor rust, there are products out on the market to help to remove. you might want to check with a local gunsmith. Now if it is major, you can re blue the whole gun. There are kits available to do that. Or this I mentioned in one of my other videos I used a product called Duracoat. It is a spray on paint product . Check the internet. Check KZbin for videos. Good luck

I have an M46(b) I.ratty rough shape. The magazine tube was missing and I found a used one that matches perfectly. It had surface rust on the metal, especially on barrel around front sight ramp….have it looking pretty good and the internal rifling looks real good. I’m still having problems with not consistently firing a round. I’ve cleaned the bolt, which requires removal of Mossberg rear sight to even get the bolt out of gun. I’ve cleaned the bolt spring and firing pin and still things are hit and miss. I might try to replace the bolt spring and firing pin and see if that makes any improvement…. It is sad that there are not many ole time smiths that work on these log gun Mossies.

I start by cleaning the wood with some alcohol. I try not to remove the finish. I then like to use tung oil. You can get it in high gloss or satin finishes. I have video on maintaining of your old guns. Check it out. There are a lot of gun finishing kits out there. Most have you first to remove the existing finish and sand the wood. I prefer to keep the original color of the wood and some of the blemishes which add character and may have a story to tell. I have refinished a couple of my guns. Check out video I did on my Mauser and another one on a mossberg M51 flat back (2 part) in these I finished the barrels and the material I used. Hope this helps.

I purchased a m46, I believe. It says United States property. M192 1947. Lend lease I suppose. All together. Terrible trigger pull, maybe 10 to 15 lbs. I need to find a manual on how to adjust it. English proof marks all over the metal. Missing fire bead. Need help to adjust trigger pull. Thanks Spiro
@capthal-rs9mq4 жыл бұрын
Spiro Are you sure you have model 46m. Only 42mb were sent to England as training rifles. And they should have a serial number on it. Does your gun have a 7 shot magazine that loads under the gun. That's model 42Mb. The model 46m would have a tubular magazine the load near the muzzle and holds about 15 rounds of 22 long rifle. As for manual, l believe none of these rifles ever had manuals. You can find parts diagram, but I have never seen a manual. But if you separated the barrel from the stock, you should see a screw located just in front of the trigger that should help to adjusted the trigger pull. You may not get the adjustment you like, but remember these guns were made as training rifles and most military rifles have a stiff pull. If you sent me the serial number of the rifle I should be able to tell when it was produced. If you are interested. If you have any other questions just ask. If I can not answer your questions I may have other people who can.

I clean the barrel after every use. The internals are all open and be cleaned with out disassembly. The bolt can be disassembled by unscrewing the back part of the bolt, just make sure you have the bolt handle unlocked with the firing pin release so the pressure is off the firing pin spring. But even that can be cleaned without disassembly. There may be some video on disassembly of other mossberg models which are closely linked to the model you have. Thanks for watching. Capthal

Matt. Mossberg developed their first scope around 1935. At the time, there was an interest in use of scopes in the shooting community. Mossberg made a number of different types over the years. Mossberg sold their rifles without scopes, but made provision on their rifle to receive scopes by drilling and tapping their guns. It was up to the purchaser to add a scope if they wanted. Over the years, an owner of a Mossberg rifle may have had a number of choices to choose from. Hope this helps. Good luck. Capt. Hal

I'm not sure. A scope I guess could be mounted anywhere on a gun as long as the view though the scope is seeing the target that the barrel is aimed at. You need to adjust the elevation and windage. My dad gave me a perfect unmodified 46 in for Christmas in 1964. I think he paid $5 for it. I saved grass cutting pay and paid a gun Smith to mount a scope on it when I was 13. The back peep came off and went in my top dresser drawer. It disappeared when I went to college. And then there’s the scope mount holes. The rifle is a laser. Zeroed at 50 yards through the peep sitting at a rest I could put all 15 rounds through the x leaving a rough hole one could cover with a dime. Squirrel and crows did not stand a chance. I cut my teeth on that rifle. It ruined me for anything that wouldn’t drive tacks. Do they all shoot that sweet? Does the 151 shoot that sweet? Thanks Rob
