Enjoy all of your videos. You have a beautiful place to shoot there, and you do an excellent job of producing your videos. I love .22 rimfires, especially the vintage ones. Remington and Winchester both made some fine rifles back in the day, as did Marlin and Stevens, and High Standard made a few for Sears under the J.C. Higgins brand name. Love your .22 Series! As you emphasized, ammo testing is invaluable for any serious shooting. About 25 years ago, I obtained a supply of RWS 40gr. std vel hollow points which shoots magnificently in several of my favorite bolt guns and have been rationing it ever since, No plinking,,, With ammo, like about everything, we tend to get what we pay for. Fortunately, steel and cans dont care! Plese keep up these great vids. We appreciate your expertise and efforts. (Now I'm trying to locate my mushroom reference books...) Pax

I know what you mean. Even rimfire ammo has gone way up in price. The only time I use hunting, and high end premium ammo is for these videos, and small game hunting.

We have a marlin wood bolt action with peep site. I grew up hunting with it, well we'll just say MANY MANY moons ago. As it was Dad's, he got me the Remington Mohawk nylon 66 when I was a bit older. That was such a lightweight and short fun gun. He passed the Marlin to my youngest at 8 yrs old, 2 yrs ago. My personal varmint critter getter for the farm is my remington model 60 now with a 3-9 Simmons 30mm scope. Great at gathering light for nighttime.

My first 22 was a Rem Model 12, wish I still had it. My 2nd 22 purchased 45 years ago, I went to the dark side and got a Savage/Anschutz 54M. Put on a Bosch and Lomb Elite 4000 scope. Still shoots as great as the day i got it. Thanks for all the great info you provide.

I guess I've been blessed with 22 rifle accuracy in my Glenfield Mod 60 over the years. with 9x magnification at 50 yds, all 15 rounds would be touching that black dot on those targets using CCI Mini-Mags 40gr lead nose. I wouldn't consider most of those groups as "good groups". Like I say, been blessed to have a 22 that is 1/2 MOA at 50 yds. Enjoy your channel very much and I appreciate the fine rifles you have and all the hard tedious work you do in uploading these vids

After seeing the groups that did best in both guns, I should make another video featuring them shooting 50 yard groups with the bores properly leaded in for their favorite ammo types. Then you'll see some tight groups, so stay tuned. I have a few ideas in mind.

First, I'm skeptical. Secondly,, distance doesn't matter. It's not a HALF MOA at 50 yards. That would be (roughly) 1 MOA. It's not half MOA at one distance and another MOA at another distance.

@@ranchodeluxe1 1 MOA at 100yds is appx 1". MOA is used as an angular measurement. However, if you want to translate it to linear measurement to reach your target, you’ll need to do some basic math. Consider the rule that one MOA is equal to one inch at 100 yards. More accurately, the one inch is 1.047, but unless you are long-distance shooting, the inch measurement is rounded off. In other words, for each minute adjustment made on your scope, there’s a one-inch change in where the bullet strikes the target. Keep in mind, too, that the farther away you are from the target, the greater the inch increase. Still confused? Use this breakdown for a better understanding: 100 yards = 1 inch MOA 300 yards = 3 inches MOA 500 yards = 5 inches MOA 800 yards = 8 inches MOA This is just a guess, but I think at 50yds one would be safe in saying it is 1/2 MOA. Sorry if find it difficult to believe an old Glenfield Mod 60 can out shoot all the modern 22 rifles. They are still plenty to be had and reasonably cheap (

Nice groups, Great Video! My Marlin model 60, CZ 457 Jaguar, Winchester model 74, Wards Westerfield 87a, Remington 550-1 & Remington 572 group well like that also at 50 yards with Remington golden bucket. So I decided to pick up a few more buckets of it over the last year. They also do well with the Federal AutoMatch. You and a few others here on KZbin have inspired me to look into older ones and thankfully most are used so I can try them out at my local place before buying. All of them so far are ones my kids and I are very happy with. They all shoot so well and have each their own personalities. Including our pistols. Thanks!!

I love your videos it’s so great to see you shooting so many different types of 22s. I’d like to add maybe something with shooting different brands and swapping out the barrel usually the first two shots will be wild because the bullets fill imperfections in the barrel, so when you have a clean barrel, the imperfections are exposed, after a couple shots, the copper or lead tends to fill in the very small imperfections in the barrel maybe that would be a fun test to do to just take two shots to prep the test and see if that makes a difference

That's right! What you described is what I encounter quite often. I think I'll start shooting a few shots of a given type of ammo before actually testing it in upcoming videos. That would be a more fair comparison.

Great video! I like these old 22's I have a couple myself. From the old bolt action 22's you've owned and or shot that have been moderately priced to inexpensive what are guns are the most accurate? Are there brands that on a whole are more accurate? Personally I've found the Mossberg 140 series to be tack drivers with ammo they like. I currently have a 144LSA and a 146B that are less than 3/4'' at 50 yd guns with their prevered ammo and sometimes as little as 1/2''

I know what you mean my friend. Old .22's just have a certain appeal. I have noticed that whenever I find one locally (like in a pawn shop), I usually get a better deal than at a gun show or even on Gunbroker.

Great video, a pleasure to watch as always . I've had pretty good luck with most rifles liking either CCI standard vel. or the SGB loads. I've yet to give Federal Ultra match a try the majority of my .22s. I'm really wanting to see how my Win.69a will shoot the Fed. UM it's unfortunate that my 69a has no provisions for mounting a scope , I'll just have to see how see shoots. Thank again for sharing.

those are nice rifles. i just bought a wood stock savage mark 2. waiting on the scope and rings from ebay.wish i could afford better but im on social security. the best cheap rimfire scopes i have used is the simmons .22 mag. can mount it lower than most others. maybe it is better now but my experience with remington bulk pack is some go POW and some go POOF

I think you will have a real shooter in that Savage. I used to shy away from the Remington bulk pack "Golden Crap", because it was so unreliable. However the newer stuff made by Vista Outdoors is waaaaay better! I have shot hundreds of rounds in my guns, and so far not one failure! I am also getting much better consistency. Like I said, I used to hate it, but now it seems to be pretty good stuff.....in certain rifles.

Another example of how you need to do some testing to find the best gun/ammo combinations with .22’s. Again, you have two beautiful examples of the 511 and the 69a. I have two 69a’s and kick myself for letting my 511 get away from me. The 511 was one of the models with the grooved receiver. I still have a 512 that is a tack driver, I won’t make the same mistake with the 512, she’s a keeper. Great informative video!!!!

I've seen in other videos, the Aguila high velocity copper plated 40gr solid or hollow point does well. Something about the longer bearing surface of the bullet and the solid crimp (presumably holding a better concentricity to the bore from the chamber) that Aguila uses on this particular load. Are you familiar with the three common chamber types being cut for barrels in .22LR? Sporting, Bentz, and National Match chambers? The most common by far on the OEM market is Sporting chamber, allows enough looseness to run just about every type of .22LR made but has the downside of requiring sampling to find the better load (variances between manufacturers). The downside to Match chambers is the fact some or many .22LR won't chamber due to the tight restrictions on the size. The chamber I haven't heard much about is the Bentz chamber which is reportedly a sort of halfway between Sporting and Match, offering better accuracy in general but not nearly as restrictive to ammo as a Match chamber.

Have my dads 69A he got in the mid 50s. Fun plinker but wish it had a scope for these old eyes. Even my Remington513T is hard to shoot through the target sights but with the tapped barrel I have mounted a scope on it and Shoot much better. Love them both.

I have my father’s Win 69A with glass bedding and it shoots ragged holes regularly. Mine has a full nickel bolt, trigger guard and trigger. Just picked up a near new condition Browning A-Bolt Medallion .22…have not shot it yet but looking forward to it. Any recommendation on a period correct scope?

That's something I don't have is a "vintage" bolt action 22. They just don't come up for sale, especially not a repeater. I do have a couple that are evenly matched in the Ruger American Rimfire and the Savage Mark ii,F. The Savage was more accurate out of the box, while I had to work to improve the Ruger's accuracy.

One of the most accurate .22 rifles I ever shot was an old Mossberg training rifle from WWII. It looked awful and with open sights shot very tight groups at 60 yards. It was hard on woodchucks at the family ranch in Montana.

Why not try high quality ammo in both like Eley subsonic HP’s? Eley also makes a high velocity HP. I only buy Eley, lapua, or RWS ammo because I never get flyers. Those companies have better QA/QC in producing ammo unlike the cheap US junk except CCI.

Never have been a fan of cleaning barrels when doing efforts like this. Looks like you proved out that it is a bad idea. You had "flyers" after each swapping. Cleaning barrels to often is a bad plan.

Wrong! Each different brand of ammo needs a fresh start in order to get an idea of what each one will do out of a fresh bore. I think I explained that in the video.

While I appreciate the effort and the vintage rifles, I have to disagree with your method of simply swabbing out the barrels for different ammunition. All your doing is removing powder fouling at best It's the lube that changes and needs conditioning in the barrel, and that takes at least five fouling shots to settle in, (ten would be better, but some ammo is so bad it probably wouldn't matter). You're not alone, every .22 shooter on youtube does it, most don't even bother swabbing. I've seen one, and just one fellow mention firing a group of ''conditioning'' shots before going for final group, but he didn't do it, he just mentioned it. Being these are sporting rifles using sporting ammunition, maybe it's not a big thing... I have seen many times though that firing a second five shot group improve, sometimes by quite a bit over a first five shot group with a more conditioned bore for a particular ammunition.

You are right about fouling in the barrel. I ran a single patch through the bore between ammo types in order to give each one a fair assessment with a semi-fresh bore. I usually get better groups after firing 5 or 6 shots, and then testing the ammo with a leaded bore with that particular brand or type, but what I was attempting to do here was make a comparison between the rifles with consistent bore swabbing. Shooting and recording 5 or 10 fouling shots after cleaning the bore would also take up alot of video time, and most viewers just don't have that much patience. Maybe I'll do that with one particular ammo brand or type for a rifle comparison in a future video since that wouldn't take up nearly as much video time.

I thought of the time required in a video too. It's like watching someone walk down range! I would simply tell the audiance what I'm doing, show them the fouling groups and record the shots for, ''score'' so to speak. I got this tip from a gunsmith/.22 match shooter years ago. I grew up on a Remington 512 SportMaster and did some light match shooting with a Remington 513T I only ever shot the W-W T-22's in it and on advice only cleaned it after the season. @@CumberlandOutdoorsman
