I love the 410 shotguns, and Mossbergs especially. They will drop the game if you’re accurate and the guns themselves are small and lightweight.

I just brought home a Mossberg 500 .410 this week and its primary use will be for home defense as even my wife with her disability can handle it and I got a good price break on it. I have both 3 inch 6 shot and 3 inch 000BK 5 pellets. It will also double for small game if needed.

I saw the .410 Mossberg pump in Walmart & wanted to get a youth model for my grandson. It was the adult size and I asked to see it. It was so perfectly balanced I had to have it. In 2011 I paid $226.66 for the Mossberg. I bought a Wheely Bird, in 2015, automatic clay pigeon which runs off of 12 volt battery and it holds a bunch of clays. Both are great fun & a couple of the best buys I have ever bought. I bought a MEC 9000 progressive .410 reloader for it because factory .410 are very expensive. You can get by with a cheaper single stage reloader.
@7485D9 жыл бұрын
+Dennis Charles Was that new price? The reason I ask is that they're around £600 here in the UK and You guys don't know how lucky You are bring able to pick up a shotgun in Walmart. There'd be a public uproar if Asda (walmart owned) tried selling them in super markets here

For 2017 prices that looks like a good price to me. I had purchased my 410 in 2011. In my opinion, it is a good shotgun for that price range but you need to buy a shotgun reloader because 410 shells are expensive. (NOTE: If you buy a .410 2 1/2" MEC 9000 progressive reloader you CANNOT convert it to reload 3" shells.) Buy AA shotshells because they are best for reloading. Recommend #7 1/2 shot because larger shot like #6 will hang up in the reloading tube sometimes but you just tap the tube with a screwdriver to get it to fall. I love my 410.

Thanks. Just got the 505 "youth" .410, and I like it. Shorter stock, a little shorter overall, but a comfortable gun, nonetheless. I'm no youth, I'm 61 and a small man and this gun feels very good to me. Home defense? Most likely close range and/or indoors, doesn't matter much what ammo, the intruder won't be a happy camper. I'd prefer multiple projectiles, a man's aim can get pretty sloppy in a tense confrontation.

Have been trying to find a 500 Mossberg around here, ( Northwest Ohio ) and seem to be a little hard to come by. The folks who have one don't want to turn loose of them ! Just got a .410 Henry Lever action 20" barrel, and love it so far ! Great varmint gun, Groundhogs, raccoons, skunks, etc. and do expect to use it for part of our home defense plan ! So much new home defense ammo, to work with. But oh boy they are definitely proud of it !

LOL!! I never even knew there was such a thing as a magazine plug until this video! I bought my mossberg 500 .410 pump used at the gun shop and it never had one. :)) Have always loaded the mag full up with 000 buck and keep one in the chamber too. For home defense, but not hunting here. I just love mine. Just my size and weight. It will "leave a mark". :))
@officialsouthsoul52234 жыл бұрын
cactus wren I be careful loading one in the chamber. Shotguns are not drop safe. I was always taught to have them loaded in the magazine and than rack one when it’s time but never keep it stored with one in the chamber.

You rack the pump correctly, I.ve seen too many rack it with less gusto and they get hung shells. Very nice video enjoyed it here in Prescott Arizona. Robert

These are also good for older people with arthritic shoulders. My wife and I enjoy ours. We keep ours ready with defensive ammo. Combine this with a MEC 410 reloader and you can make 410 ammo for less than the cost of 12 gauge.

Many years ago, more than 50, some testing was done of Ithaca guns with different fixed chokes and slugs to demonstrate their open choke Buck Buster's superior accuracy when compared to tighter chokes. As I recall, this was done by one of the gun magazines available at the time. Tighter chokes grouped better. Both ranges of chokes were shooting well enough to avoid having to call the groups "patterning".

Years ago, a family friend and gunsmith who was also a very experienced hunter, asked if he could make a good all around hunting gun for me. Sure what a great idea. He ended up giving me a 500 in .410 with a set of molds for ball and bullet. He modified the full choke gun with a screw in choke. The bullet mold was for a colt.42 at 220 gns. He modified the front sight. I can hunt anything where I live with a box of mixed hand loads. 42 calibre balls light shot and a massive bullet that will drop anything around here within 100 yards. I gave it to a family member years ago on an extended loan. It might be time to get it back. :)

Good videos. I have the same Mossberg .410 and it's a fun gun. I've convinced my friends that it's not a toy. I also reload using .40 caliber and .38 caliber lead bullets. the .38's fit nicely in a .410 wad and the .40 caliber fit nicely without a wad, just fiber and felt wads under. I don't shoot them in my Mossberg, just in my break open .410's. It really shows how powerful a .410 can be. My break open .410 has a full choke of .40 diameter, so no problems with either load.
@buffalosoutdoors7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The .410 is one of my favorite shotguns to shoot as I've stated before. That's interesting making your own slugs from the .38 bullets.
@PucketyCrik7 жыл бұрын
It gives the .410 a lot more umph, and you can feel it when you shoot. I only use those loads in a break open hinge gun, because the chamber is much thicker. Never in my Mossberg. Too many little parts to damage.
@rangerup18049 жыл бұрын
My first ever gun was a 410 single shot shotgun. Still have it and it has taken many squirrels and jack rabbits as well as dove. Love it but you are right about the price of a box of shells, kind of expensive but here again you get 50 to the box so not too bad considering you get that many per box. Feed it the correct self defense shells and the 410 is a good home defense weapon. Mossberg used to make a home defense 410 shotgun that had a vertical fore grip and held several rounds.

Love 410's. You have to be a bit more thinking when shooting moving things, shots always like a elongated stream rather than a cloud like 12g. The best thing is same ballistics, often faster, guns weigh less, less kick and amo very light weight to carry. The only downside is my current .410 is a 9410 which I got cheap but now worth silly money and not inclined to wear it out! Used to have a re-bored bolt Anchutz which i regrettably sold. Thinking about getting a 500 now. Scruffy, utility, reliable, cheap and not fussy on cartridges. I have a cheap 12g pump and it'll swallow anything.

Sweet-looking little gun... I bought a single-shot ,410 specifically to develop defensive loads, to see what it would do... with 4 ,38 balls, wax slugs, or ,45 LC w/ sabot & .38 wad-cutter, it was quite effective....although if casting balls, they need to be hard-cast to minimize crushing / deforming....the wax slugs would be the easiest to make, without specialized equipment....with proper loads, I think the ,410 would be an excellent home defense round....especially of you want a non-shooter wife to be able to use it if necessary...

Great video. I own a Mossberg .410 pump. Love it! It is pretty accurate with slugs 25-30 yards. I use it mostly to get rid of the pesky red squirrels around our cabin using 3" 6 shot. I shot the PDX1 Defender - Winchester Ammunition at 15 yards, it does some serious damage. For self defense in your home your looking at probably 15 feet. The .410 would work great. Low recoil enough power to get the job done too. Thanks for the upload. Have a great Thanksgiving!

I have a mossberg 500 410 ga TSS turkey gun. It has a xfull choke screw in choke. In mossy oak bottom land camo. I bought mine for squirrel, quail and crow hunting. Only way to go on shooting a 410. Is to reload for it. I keep a bunch of 3 inch 11/16 loads handy for hunting. I am going to turkey hunt with it. A pattern master black turkey choke. And ninja turkey loads . I wouldn't be afraid to use a 410 as home defense. Even inside a house. Using a 1/2 oz of 6 or 7 shot. It would blow a hole thru someone. I known 4 different 410. My next one will be another 410 in a over and under.

Don Martin you would actually be surprised. Sure you hit something with a 4/10 slug it might stop them you better be a good shot and 000 buck you better be a very good shot. You are thinking in a perfect world you could line the bad guy up and pull the trigger sure in that world a 4/10 would do the job but in real life you probably will miss and if not you might only hit them with one pellet. Depending where you hit them a grown man could still fight even if you could get a good shot off. 12 gauge 00 buck shot and your odds look a lot better.

Awhile back I saw Mossberg was offering a slug barrel/choked barrel combo in the 500. What would you think about using a 3 inch slug with a rifle sighted barrel for deer or pigs? My only complaints about the 500 .410 is the price. It is usually priced about the same as a 20 or 12 gauge 500, and that like the larger 500's I think it has a plastic trigger guard/lower floor plate, which if t breaks usually makes the gun inoperable. My question on that is why don't the engineers take a tip from Ruger? Use an investment casting made from a strength rated aluminum, and if wearing is a concern on holes for pivot pins, why not press in small bronze bushings to allow the pins to ride in? Overall, a good couple of videos.

Looking at the Mossberg website as of May 2024, the all purpose 500 is no longer available in .410 bore. They offer a camouflage turkey model, but not the good old plain Jane wood furniture model. That sucks because I wanted one. The ones that are left on the market, if there is any, will probably cost an arm and a leg.

It really is. It is my favorite shotty to just get out and shoot. It's not like the little single shot .410s that most people seem to think of when I mention a 410. This thing actually shoots very well. Thanks for watching my friend.

Do you use brennecke's in your 410 Mossberg 500

I've been wondering is if a .410 is adequate as a camp defense gun.
@keatonjorgensen87936 жыл бұрын
I guess if your defending yourself against grouse, squirrel and rabbits. If your worried about bears and hills have eyes people then get a 12 or at least 20 gauge

It's not for me but for my girlfriend who is slight in stature and recoil sensitive. Personally I carry a .454 Casull or when in Canada I have a .35 lever gun. I find your response dismissive and with out thought to the matter.

@@georgemartin4963 He might be dismissive, but he might also be right.
@georgemartin49635 жыл бұрын
Hard to tell since he didn't give the question a serious thought. I'm guessing 4 or 5 .410 (.41caliber) slugs thrown at 10 yards might work. But I'd like a responsible answer to my query and not a flip one.

@@georgemartin4963 I'm guessing a 410 slug would do the job, but have no experience with this load at all.

I have this gun but do they all come with the same choke because someone told me that you can't shoot slugs out of this gun???

Jaelyn Dobbs No. They are available with different chokes.

Contrary to what he said about shooting rifled slugs out of any standard choke. I would strongly disagree with this. They may squeeze down Enough to fit but would at bare minimum cause rapid barrel wear and excessive heat build up. You should ONLY use slugs with a cylinder or improved cylinder bore choke. Nothing smaller.

My Mossberg 500 .410 is my favorite squirrel gun! I reload .410 and I was wondering if it's ok to fire steel shot out of it.
@buffalosoutdoors8 жыл бұрын
If yours is full choke I say it's a bad idea. Mostly because steel usually patterns unevenly when fired through a full choke meant for lead shot. Steel can also damage your choke, it doesn't compress and squeeze through the way lead does.

Within 30 feet .410 3 inch magnum no 6 birdshot I think will take care of most threats. Buckshot out of .410 is also more than enough for home defense. But over penetration is a problem

What model is it? There are at least a half dozen Mossberg 500 .410 shotguns, each oriented towards a slightly different use (all-purpose, hunting, Turkey, tactical, home defense, etc).

If you make another video with this gun will you test how number 6 shot in a 3 inch shell will pattern at squirrel hunting distances like 25 to 30 yards. I have friends say that the pattern opens up too much for a 30 yard shot. Thanks, and Merry Christmas
@buffalosoutdoors10 жыл бұрын
JimmyCricket61258 Yeah I could do some patterning of this gun. It will probably be a while before I get to it though. Winter is hard for me to get much done and I have so many videos that I am behind on right now.
@sycamorebacker19 жыл бұрын
+JimmyCricket61258 It's hard for me to judge distance in a woods, but I think 30 yds is any easy shot for a 410. Someone else might want to confirm that.

I have the 410 pump like the one in your video and me and my dad are wondering how could we mount a scope on it to hunt with?
@dennischarles89769 жыл бұрын
+Shelby Koah I got a Ruger 10/22 mount through Baraska on the internet. I took it to a gun smith and had him tap my receiver with 4 screws that came with the Ruger mount and mounted a Red Dot scope on it. I love the Red Dot scope. I had bought one twenty years ago and it sat on my shelf for 15 before I finally mounted it. Wish I would have mounted it earlier on my Ruger 10/22. I have the Red Dot on my Mossberg 500 .410 now. It works great for road hunting which is legal in South Dakota. I use 8 shot for denser patterns for head shots with the Red Dot on sitting roosters and it is very effective. I leave the red dot turned off for flying shots because the red dot distracts me for snap shooting. I always leave the red dot turned off to save the battery and turn only for sitting pheasants and the one battery lasted me for 10 days of hunting until I reached my POSSESSION limit of 30 pheasants.
