I’m a boomer that grew up in California to a mother and father that were major liberals. I had to join the Army to fire guns. I was introduced to the military’s 590A1, that thing was heavy but super useful. I carried that for awhile, then I carried the M60. Fun times!

That’s awesome! I also grew up in CA, parents weren’t against guns, but I wouldn’t say we were a “gun family”. We had a .22 and my dad got a Mosin Nagant when I was older. I went shooting at scout camp and occasionally with friends but it wasn’t till I married the daughter of a deputy and moved to Idaho I really got to start exploring them a lot more.

I bought the 590A-1 and it is a great gun...added an XS Big Dot tritium front bead and it really stands out...

Been shooting Mossberg's like 1982 my first shootgun in 1977 was a Winchester 1897 i have three Mossberg's now a 500 12 GA 18.5 inch barre & a 20 inch barre with three chokes 590 20 GA 18.5 inch barre for my girls and just got my 590 retro 18.5 barre ,now my first 590 the boys are geting .

Something about the 18.5 over the 20 for me

I like the barrel length of the 18.5, but I miss the extra capacity and bayonet lug from the 20 incher

I’m probably going to hold out for the 590A1. The seven shot 590A1 is about $50 more than the nine shot Retro 590, but is a more robust build. The Retro is prettier for sure, but I want a beefier version. Tough decision.

I like it better than the 590 a1 and 500. Its the sweet spot. I own a 590. Its the perfect shoty. Mines not retro but a i got the ghost ring sights. Good video

the 590a1 definitely seems way too expensive for a pump shotty. What about the 590 do you like better than the 590a1? I read the 590a1 has all metal trigger groups + thicker barrel. On paper, sounds like it would be better but given the price tag.... I was leaning towards the 590 retro instead

@@HP-in8plthe metal safety, trigger guard and heavy barrel are nice, but they really aren’t necessary. For the average user a regular 500 will suffice. The 590 is a mild step up from the 500. The only real difference is the mag tube. The 590 does open you up to options like ghost ring sights and such though. I’m happy with all my Mossbergs. I have 590s and 590A1s though 😂 I like nice things.

Really, a heat shield? Only adds weight. But any 590A1 is very durable and dependable. Even more the most will ever need.

Yeah for 99% of users, a heat shield is overkill. Still a cool feature it comes with though. I’ll probably end up taking it off however.

The Mossberg 59OA1 was made originally under specifications for a military buy of shotguns. The Navy required a thicker barrel so it wouldn't get bent Or dented by the metal doors and frame of a ship. Apparently, that had happened before. Your are correct it adds weight. Which is unnecessary for practically anybody else. So , you could get the civilian version.

I bought that exact model(590 retrograde 18.5) and the fit and finish of the butt stock is horrible. Lots of over hang near the receiver. Kinda disappointing.

@Patriot7-t4u QC is slipping with Mossberg man. I have a 590A1 that was made three years ago. Th fitment of the trigger guard is really bad. It hangs out of the receiver, pretty unsightly. The gun functions fine though I’ll give em that’s. All my mossbergs function great. It’s just the little things like that that irritates me.

I picked up a used 20" 590A1 w? ghost ring sights years ago. A 507 on a CROM mount and Magpul furniture later' its the last one id ever let go of. It really looks like youre in the Magic Valley?

Are there 590s with changeable Chokes?

Yes! Usually the 18.5 inch barrel doesn’t have it but there are other configurations that do.

This is the 18.5 version. 20 inch comes with the bayonet lug.

@@kenstewart7700there are two 590 retros, and then a separate 590A1 retro. Long barrel 590 had lug, with plastic guard. 599a1 has lug, sights, metal guard, thicker barrel

Many would say a bead sight is best. Anything other than the bead would be designed for slugs. I’m not sure what you shoot…
