I inherited my palomino from my grandfather 25 years ago. I still shoot it today. One of the most accurate 22 I have owned.

I met my little wife in gunsmithing school, and while her best bet has been to make guns that fit her, we are always on the lookout for factory guns that work well with smaller people. She absolutely fell in love with the bl22 Micro Midas when she found it. She has since been introduced to hunting, and she thoroughly enjoys adding squirrels to the stew pot with it. It wasn't until a few days ago that I discovered that Browning also made a t-bolt in a micro-midas sizing. Unfortunately they are discontinued, and likely to cost a premium if and when they appear back on the used market.

I have that Palomino but under the Western Auto name. My prized possession. Even better condition than the one you are holding. Found it for under 200, not long ago and it included a nice weaver marksman 4x scope.

Yours appears to have the 24" barrel which would be the Mossberg Palomino 400 made from 1959 to 1960, they also made the 400-A from 1960 to 1969. Mossberg also produced a carbine version, the Palomino 402 with a 18.5" barrel from 1961 to 1964 and a 20" barrel version from 1964 to 1971. I have a 18.5" version of the 402.

You're teasing with that Savage 99 in front, very elegant looking! I tend to pick up old .22s when my LGS gets them. One of the best of the latest is a "ranger-22", a heavy barreled target rifle, very nice redfield micro-adjustable peep sight, bolt action. Looks like a Savage/Stevens with a Wards brand name. You never know what will turn up as old men die and the kids sell off the collections. I got a beautiful old Winchester Hi-Wall 1885 in .22 WCF from that same estate. I bought reloading components, bullets, 22 Hornet ammo for the brass, and an antique Winchester reloading tool. The 1885 was made in 1887, I may reload with black powder for the authentic experience. The bullets are .228" lead and appear to be lubed with beeswax, all set for BP.

You have all the luck! The Ranger is a classic and the 1885 is a legend - that is such a fantastic rifle to own - most people never even get the chance.
@3ducs6 жыл бұрын
The ranger is a Wards/Stevens 414 Target. The shop texts me when they get that sort of thing, I get nice prices too. It's just a little place, one man shop. The best sort of place to have a good relationship with. I really like the wide range of firearms you present.

A week ago I met a very interesting woman in a gun shop. She was there picking up a Browning Micro BL22 and a Ruger Mini14 she'd ordered. She is five feet tall, 100 pounds, and that Browning fit her perfectly.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns3 жыл бұрын
I like the Micro a lot - use it often and mostly grab the Micro when I'm headed into the woods somewhere. The Mini is ideal as well. She knows guns!

I put a Skinner peep on my Browning BL22. I have the BL-22 FLD, Grade 1. What made me want this model is the satin finish on the American walnut. It is the prettiest rifle in the collection.

I remember the Palimino from early 1970's mail order catalogs. It was the only Mossberg I found aesthetically pleasing, more attractive (to me) than the BL-22. Agree with you that the BL-22 is an exceptionally well designed rifle. The rifle I REALLY wanted was the FN built Browning T-Bolt (the T-2 model) from the same era. Pricey, but classy, and unique.

Hi Shawn - the T Bolt is always great - so durable, accurate and fast.

Thanks for sharing your videoS with us. I really enjoy your channel-you’ve got an abundance of knowledge that gives ME a lot to look for on KZbin, or on the internet. I’ve misplaced/(lost?) many hours looking up rifles you have mentioned in your videos, or watching more of your videos. As a matter of fact, I’ve recently found a '1st generation' T-Bolt with an Action/BOLT that looks to be much easier to cycle than the new models. My experience with the new T-Bolt was awful, even my able-bodied friends found it to be awkwardly difficult to work the action, (I’m the quadriplegic with arms that move but hands that've been 'out of order' since my accident...I’m also a mediocre target shooter!). It’s your video comparing the 'new' T-Bolt with your ORIGINAL T-Bolt that got me looking for a 1st generation model and now I have found one. The person selling it must’ve seen that video, too. He/she is asking $1200...& I could get an Izhmash from the USA (through Borderview International) for that price. There’s a great rifle that you haven’t done yet-The Izhmash (Biathlon) Model 7-2 in .22LR! That’s a beautiful rifle! Be well!
@UnitedStatesOfGuns6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for writing! Well done! You found an original T Bolt - so much better than the new ones. The Izhmash is on my list - just have to find and buy - good suggestion. Good shooting!

Thumbs up for your analysis on BL-22 Micro Midas. They are an exceptional value. I'm wondering if Browning sells them without profit, as they officially retail for $40 less than the regular bl-22. If you view the replacement parts diagram, the Micro Midas parts costs just the same or more as their full size brethren. If you consider Brownings' stock upgrade policy (1/2 off a new one), then basically this rifle comes with two stocks for nearly the same price as the full size! The Micro Midas will probably be discontinued in the future - sadly.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns6 жыл бұрын
I hope there is still time to buy another! I think you're correct - they are going to vanish. Already sold out in many places. Maybe more shipments coming - I hope so. Bye for now.
@RockwoodJoe6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I bit the bullet and snagged one (on clearance!) as I saw them not being replenished or re-stocked. I also have the regular grade ii bl-22 which just isn't as "fun" as you also mentioned. Keep up the mature reviews!
