To be an independent animator, you don’t have one job to do, you’ve got to be the whole dang crew! You’ve got to be the actors, the cameramen, the director, the lighting department, makeup, set designer, storyboarder, the marketing department, basically everything aside from the boom mic guy ... unless you’re doing a gag that involves a boom mic in which case you would also be the boom mic guy.

I would agree with you, except for the fact that one of the first things anyone outside animation says when I tell them I'm an animator is "wow that must take a lot of patience"

I'm really glad you mentioned cinematography because it's such a shame when people don't think about it. Marketing is definitely something I still need to work more on myself. For anyone wanting to look more into acting when it comes to animation I recommend Ed Hooks' book Acting for Animation. Some of the stuff he says regarding women specifically is a bit too old-fashioned for me but the book helped me with acting through my animation and it really opened my eyes to being able to analyse other animators' acting performance.

Well, actually in college graphic design classes they actually recomend that you make your designs like everyone else's, lest you depart into coocooville or last years design trends. And in the end, I've seen a movie poster/cover very much like this one. "Windwalker" is an example, thought it's a bit more of a plot callage... But they're both plot collages just to different degrees. (BTW, you should watch Windwalker. It's about a badass old man Native American, left in the wilderness to die because it's believed he's too old to survive on his own, and therefore is a detriment to the tribe.) Cool, you mentioned "How To Win Friends and Influence People". Dale Carnegie's organization updated the book, actually: "How To Win Friends And Influence People in a Digital Age"

Orphanlast interesting point you make about being advised to make your designs like everyone elses. Very true that there are incentives for following trends. But i think there are even bigger potential rewards for going against the grain for those who are brave enough to do it. In this poster design i didn't stand out too much, i wanted to use traditional principles. But i am starting to question things - and hopefully that questioning will lead to some refreshing contributions to the art world

most of the animators i see on youtube that arent big want to be sakuga animators and they think sakuga means quick and flashy so they forget the point of fights and stuff as well as sakuga being very professional and smooth animation

I substitute teach for high school, which gives me: student models available as references, staying current with youth, and being forced to sit in a room with no choice but to work on your freelance work. Get paid for your time twice. I'm still low-income but very happy! if I have a hard commission deadline, I can take any day(s) off with no issues at all.

Hey howard.. i see you've switched over to toon-boom ... which would you recommend to a beginner animator .. toon boom or flash/adobe animate?.. Great video by the way

It is actually TVPaint! I would recommend learning on your desired software straight away. So if you see yourself working in the TV industry for companies like Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network, Toonboom is a good choice - learn it asap. If you are going down more of a painterly/ fine art route and want your work to be a throwback to traditional animation techniques, TVPaint is awesome. If you want to make interactive pieces for the internet then flash is a good choice. If you really just need something that is extremely intuitive and simple to get you started without frustrating you then adobe flash has the simplest interface and is the easiest to pick up, but tbh TVPaint isn't far behind in terms of UI. ToonBoom has the steepest learning curve by far.

I personally love windows 7, but use whatever you are most comfortable with And once you get duel monitors you will never want to go back to a single monitor Additional RAM and a high functioning graphics card are helpful

Hey I have a question how much drawing would you do for let’s say a 2 min video ?

Mack Joseph you can work it out: 24 frames per second On twos and threes mostly so that's an average of about 9 fps Two minutes is 120 seconds Multiply them to get 1080 Then you will probably have certain shots like the establishing shot which won't have any redrawing so knock about 100 frames off to give you 980 frames. Then add back on about 100 drawings for pre production (those are the hardest drawings) to get you back to 1080 as a very rough average

You can take that further: Find out what your deadline is. Work out how many days until your deadline then take the total number of frames (1080) and divide it by the number of days. Now you have a daily average of drawings that you need to meet each day. But make sure to take into account extra tasks such as post production colouring , shadow pass, sound and foley, voice overs, contingency time etc. ... i should make a video on this!

How do you create a fade/blur camera effect with Adobe animate? I have been in the verge of murdering since they don't have the option?

Aghast Font fading can be done by making the object into a movie clip or graphics symbol and setting it to alpha and adjusting the slider. Blur can be an effect applied to movie clip symbols. I used after effects mostly for that kind of thing

search for blur in the effects panel of adobe after effects. Add one of the blurs to your layers and in the timeline you can control how much blur each layer has at different times. There are also other blurs like motion blurs and radial blurs which can come in handy for other effects. Plugins like red giant offer even more blurs

used it in combination with a large round standard soft brush - I think I had it on the multiply blending mode as well when you select an area you can only paint within it so it is quite a useful method
