@@ThePapa1947 The Cherry Plums are becoming harder to find. I passed a "beautiful" dead C.P. on a hike in Berkeley recently. The trunk is full of knobby bumps. I know the wood is beautiful inside. This tree, I could have easily pushed over the entire tree with zero effort. It is that far gone. I asked the adjoining house for permission to remove and was fiercely denied!!!!! This tree along with so many others will soon go in the chipper. Strange in that there is zero interest in this dead tree until someone has an interest. So very strange to me.

Rainy days I like, snowy days I like even more. Taking something that nature has offered and then tried to reclaim is a challenge that some of us are prepared to accept. Heading into the shop and producing something of beauty that was about to disappear takes vision and skill. This is obviously a skill that you possess, and you have proved that many times including today. Very nice job giving a once graceful tree a new lease on life for others to enjoy.

The grain in the wood is really interesting, it's not a thing like plum. I don't have a means to send a picture so if you like I'll post some pictures on facebook. Please pardon all my typos. Gorgeous piece of wood Gary. I've used CA to harden punky wood during turning, but not come across wood hardener before. You used it after the gouge work. Can you use it before? Can it change wood colour like CA.? ...though it doesn't seem to have in this piece. Thanks Gary for sharing. Vids stll better than Friday night TV in the UK , :-)

On the void on the inside, do you have to fill it in completely to avoid food contamination?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Ай бұрын
Thanks for the question James. I make very few turnings meant for food. This will not be used for food but maybe some personal items to keep track of them. I do have a number of snack bowls around here and they are void free and finished with food safe finishes such as Acks abrasive paste and wax. Thanks for watching, Gary

Yer a wizard, Gary- you turned that ugly plum into a real peach! I've got some questions about that wood hardener- is it another form of shellac, or is it a different product? Why did you choose it over something like a shellac-based sealer? And finally, where can one buy this wood hardener?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Ай бұрын
Thank you very much Johnny for your comments. They are much appreciated. The wood harder is more like a thinned resin. I would say it is mostly acetone. It does add more to a punky piece than shellac will. I put a coat on and let it set for awhile then and more. You can see it build up as long the piece is not like a sponge. I used Varathane Wood Harder. Looks to be the same as Minwax but not for sure. Thanks for watching, Gary

@@ThePapa1947question on the wood hardener: is it food safe?
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Ай бұрын
@@susanhipp3629 I would think not and I know I would not eat out of a bowl that I used it on. But I would never eat out of this bowl no matter what. People will say with finishes that once the fumes are gone it is food safe. But if it is something like poly or lacquer or epoxy that makes a shell I sure would not want to eat a chip of any of it. So boo hoo humbug on the theory of no fumes makes it food safe.

I have some plum from a backyard rogue at my brothers home drying in my basement. I cannot wait to stumble in your footsteps. I like to seal coat and finish with a 4-pound cut of shellac. What wood hardener product did you use? Thank you for sharing-and inspiring!

I have never mixed my own shellac. I am wondering if you have wax for the final finish? Zinsser shellac has wax in it and the Seal Coat does not. I used Varathane brand wood harder. Sounds like you have a nice stash of Plum. Have fun turning it. Gary
@goodhopepond
@goodhopepond Ай бұрын
@ I stopped using zinsser because I wanted to avoid methyl neurotoxins. I buy flakes and mix with 200 proof denatured ethyl alcohol). It’s easy, safe, environmentally better or do I understand, flashes fast, and creates a beautiful finish. 2-pound cut works great for seal coating. 4- pound for finishing. Also for a poly product, polywhey. Very low voc. Hard, clear, flattens well, no yellowing. HVLP works beautifully.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Ай бұрын
@@goodhopepond I see on the list that Seal Coat contains ethanol not methanol. The Zinsser shellac is waxed for a final finish. Are you doing anything over your 4 pound mix? I have been wanting to try mixing my own and just may give it a try. Are you using the Polywhey over bare wood as opposed to using your 2 pound cut of shellac? I use the Polycrylic on a lot of things which is water based as well. Thanks for your tips, Gary
@goodhopepond
@goodhopepond 27 күн бұрын
@@ThePapa1947 Yikes you are absolutely right about Zinsser sealcoat primarily using ethanol. It does have other ingredients and some cautions on the SDS. Working with a pure ethanol from a reliable supplier (such as Quality Chemical’s 200 proof ethanol DNA) and good quality blonde or super blond dewaxed flakes lets me be more assured of the DNA product and more flexibility in ratcheting the #cut up/down as needed. I use as a 1-2#cut sealcoat and can just concentrate what’s left in the Mason jar with additional lac flakes if using as a final finish which is clearer than BullsEye shellac (and yes, after curing shellac can be waxed with a good quality paste wax), or as I mentioned HVLP spray with PolyWhey (from Vermont Natural Coatings). Just one old guy’s practice…Hope this is helpful in some small way.

@@goodhopepond what gets me the most is there is a lot of people that say all finishes are food safe once you can not smell the vapors. Well I would say a chunk of poly is not safe to eat no matter how long it as dried. With the stuff they put in the food we eat I guess it should not be a worry.

Tree that grow in yards have busy lives. They can be exposed to a lot of interference in their growth, so it makes sense that it looked like a burl. It probably got pruned a bunch throughout its time. I have something similar drying in the corner of my shop, but I'm not even sure what species it is, just that it was some kind of fruit tree.
