The Icelandic coast guard simply recorded those transmissions and played them back to the radio at opportune moments. This simply made it so that it became damn near impossible to any troller to make a profit from fishing since they were all fishing in a tiny area. In the end the coast guard decided against it on the account of being too outnumbered by the navy even with the Irish help. Any way in the end the Icelanders inflicted heavy economic damage to both the navy and the trollers illegally fishing in their waters and even though the conflicts were ultimately ended by Iceland threatening to leave nato that doesnt mean they did so without a fight and I belive it is more than fair to say that Iceland did simply win those wars both militarily and diplomatically.

@@saltyman1848 I dont know about where exactly you can find it online. To the world ofcourse it's a bit of an obscure war that no one really mentions. But in Iceland it is a matter of great national pride and therefore a lot has been documented about it. The conflict is taught about in school's, documentaries have been made and countless books. That and the fact that I've had the privilege to talk to one of the Captains of the coast guard that served in the cod war personally. Who described the story in great detail.
@ThatIcelandicDude
@ThatIcelandicDude 4 жыл бұрын
@@saltyman1848 What you have to underatand is that to many this conflict justified Icelands existence as an independent republic and it is what would define our nation to the world. You see for centuries the Brits had been fishing in Icelandic waters and when the Danes tried to do anything about it Britain deployed their standard gunboat diplomacy and the Danes not wanting to risk a war for litle old Iceland just backed off and ignored the British fishing. At the outbreak of the first cod war, Iceland had only existed as an independent country for 14 years. This was our moment of trial, this was the moment we had to choose what sort of republic we were going to be, were we going to bow down to a greater power that came in our waters to bully us and take away our only resource, or were we going to do what they danes had failed to do for centuries, were we going to prove to the world that this republic had a reason to exist and that we weren't better of in Danish hands (which is a common sentiment even today) Was this republic going to stand up for it's people and fight with all it got, no matter the odds, no matter the consequences. Would we stand up for ourselves? And we did, we gambled everything we had, used every tool at our disposal and we won the day. Today Iceland is Europes second largest producer of fish and our economy is very much defined by our fishing. Right after the cod wars ended we introduced a quota system to keep the fish population in check, A system that has very successfully protected us from overfishing and is likely the sole reason our Fishing grounds are some of the richest in the world. None of this would have been possible had we lost the cod wars and the truth is we would likely be akin to a third world country today if we had.

Perhaps that would be good for the fish stock? One of the main reasons why Iceland does not want to join the EU is the fact that EU still looks at fish stock as something you can "politically choose how much you can catch each year" instead of thinking about how large is that stock and what percentage of it is available to us to catch this year so we can maintain it in the future.

It really is an over simplification to state Iceland won only by threatening to leave NATO. Icelands strategy in the cod war was to make it impossible for british trollers to make a profit while fishing in Icelandic waters. This included the coast guard dragging knives along the ocea floor cutting nets, arresting british sailors and doing there best to avoid the navy.This was incredibly effective and most trollers just gave up on coming there. Than they played one of histories funniest cat and mouse game where the Icelandic coast guard made fools of the Royal navy time and time again. One of such cases were the use of radios. In the beginning the Brits tried to create a surveillance system where they would try to spot the coast guard vessels and than warn trollers of their whereabouts over the radio and letting them know where it was safe to fish. The Icelandic coast guard simply recorded those transmissions and played them back to the radio at opportune moments. This lead the navy to abonden that tactic and instead tried to protect there trollers by making them travel in large groups surrounded by the navy. This simply made it so that it became damn near impossible to any troller to make a profit from fishing since they were all fishing in a tiny area. All this would eventually lead to the two powers aggressively ramming each others vessels in an attempt to inflict damage upon one annother. Something that turns our the Icelanders were simply better at. At the end of the 3rd cod war 15 out of 22 royal frigates had been badly damaged and one was even decomissioned. 5 out of Icelands 8 vessels were damaged, one of which so much that the crew surrendered to the navy and were brought to England. On the way the Coast guard crew spent some time in the frigates kitchen, the cooks of which were all from Northern Ireland. There the Irish did what they could to convince the Icelanders to go out and atempt to take the ship by force and assured them they would aid them. The two groups spent alot of time discussing strategy and how to approach this matter.

@@MyRegardsToTheDodo That honestly is very incorrect. The US is still very keen on keeping Iceland as an ally. Especially now due to the increaseing tensions in the Artic. In fact ever since the Obama administration the US has been actively trying to reestablish a military presence in the country. Something that Iceland has repeatedly turned down. The artic is a growing hotbead between China, Russia and Thr USA and you think the Americans are just going to give up Iceland so the UK can fish in Icelandic waters??? Fuck no. The fact still remains that Iceland holds a key position in US dominance over the north Atlantic and they are absolutely not going to give that up.

@@MyRegardsToTheDodo The British didn't fire on those boats becouse it would have been the end of them. Both Scandinacia and the US favoured Iceland's position in the war and would have responded quickly to an UK aggression. You can expect heavy sanctions on the UK as well as possible military response oh and all but the guarantee of the disintegration of Nato. You think that for a second the US wouldn't have taken actions against the Uk? Only 3 years prior the US sited against the UK in a defensive war against Egypt a country that wasnt even allied to the US. You think they are going to ignore a an offensive war against their ally? Lastly US interests in Iceland were ever meant for Europes protection. But about American dominion over the north Atlantic a position that hasnt changed. The US still considers Iceland a vital ally.

Derrin Douglas see the thing is the Canadian navy is actually blue water capable we have 12 frigates with 12 more on the way 6-8 AOPVs and 4 submarines that admittedly don’t work but the Philippines currently has 1 frigate with 1 on the way 1 corvette with 2 ordered 0 submarines with 1 ordered and a crap ton of coastal patrol vessels the real problem would be invading as Canada currently has no landing ships or refuelers the Philippines does but getting them across the ocean with only 1 or 2 escorts won’t go well and even if you made it across the ocean the terrain in western Canada is mountainous and cold in the winter not to mention if both sides tried to invade we would have no air support as both Canada and the Philippines have no aircraft carriers

There's something reeeeeeeeeeeally important to add in the dispute between Canada and The Philippines that explains a lot: It's a regular practice that has been increasing recently, rich countries send its garbage to poor conuntries, in that way they meet the needs in regulations and laws about garbage control and treatment of solid wastes, first they send small amounts, then a little bit more, until they convert third world countries in their private dump, a lot of times they falsify companies in poor countries, apparently those companies are aimed to "recile" this garbage (justifing the import), but at the end, those companies just left the garbage "in a corner" polluting the poor country, it's a common strategy in European countries, specially Denmark, Germany, France and England, they send a lot of their garbage to African countries. I suppose nobody will be happy if their government allows that, so, well done for Philippine's president. here an example by BBC, I think it's one similar by DW about Germany and Denamark, but in Africa, specially electronic wastes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpi4dYhjlM59i5Y

There's another stupid conflict between Canada and Spain called "The turbot war"! In 1995 cod population was in rapid decline and the Canadian government had to restrict it's fishing industries to try and let the cod population grow back to make sure they don't go extinct which would've crushed the local population. Fishing being the main source of employment in the region the fisheries had to look for another specie to fish and so they started to target the Greenland Turbot. However, other countries were also targeting the Greenland turbot, often fishing right on the edge of Canada’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and using fishing gear which was illegal under Canadian law, such as small-mesh nets. The Canadians also claimed that foreign vessels had quotas that were set too high, fished too intensively and their overfishing on the edge of the EEZ was going to undo all the conservation measures that Canada had put in place to restore their fish stocks. The situation came to a head in 1995 when Canada decided that it needed to show how serious they were about protecting their waters by making an example of a foreign vessel. On 9th March a Canadian air patrol plane spotted the Spanish trawler fishing twenty-eight miles outside of the EEZ. Coast guard and Canadian navy vessels were launched and headed towards the Spanish trawler. On spotting the approaching Canadian vessels the Spanish captain ordered the crew to cut the nets of their own ship and sailed the ship away from the Canadians at top speed. After being pursued for several hours the Spanish trawler only stopped when the Canadian Coast Guard vessel fired a burst of machine gun fire across its bows, and warned that the next shots would be aimed at the Ship itself. By this time other Spanish fishing boats had come to assist the trawler and had to be held off by high-pressure water cannons while the Spanish trawler was boarded by Canadian officers. When the Spanish vessel’s net was recovered it was found to have a much smaller mesh than Canadian law allowed, meaning that the Spanish vessel had been fishing illegally. The crew of the Spanish trawler were arrested and the trawler was towed back to the Canadian city of St. John’s. Spain were furious and demanded the immediate release of the trawler and its crew. They claimed that Canada had no right to arrest the crew of the ship, and although the net was illegal under Canadian law they were fishing outside of Canada’s EEZ in international waters where there are no laws governing mesh size. Canada cited a Sea Convention, which stated that they had the legal right to protect fish stocks that straddle their EEZ and international waters. The Canadians claims were further strengthened when an independent inspection of the Estai reported back: 70-80 per cent of fish the Spanish vessel had caught were undersized or protected, and a false bulkhead revealed secret storage tanks that contained twenty-five tons of the heavily protected American plaice. Furthermore, the captain had two differing sets of logbooks recording his catch a favourite trick of corrupt skippers who catch way over their quota then submit one logbook containing correct figures to the authorities while keeping the true figures in the other logbook for their own use. European countries were split over who they supported in the dispute. Britain and Ireland took Canada’s side, while, despite the obvious wrong doing of the Spanish trawler, the European Union supported Spain, with Iceland being particularly vocal in their support for the Spanish. By this point the dispute had descended into name-calling, with the Spanish claiming the Canadians had behaved like “pirates”, while Canada accused Spain of being “conservation criminals” and “cheats.” Germany lent naval support to the Spanish, while British Prime Minister risked turning the EU community against Britain by coming out with strong public support for the Canadians. When the issue of bringing trade sanctions against Canada was brought up the British PM made it clear that Britain would be opposed to any attempt to impose such sanctions against Canada, and since these proposals required unanimous support from all EU countries the British PM opposition stopped the sanctions from going ahead. Many British and Irish trawlers began flying the Canadian flag to show which side they supported in the dispute. This led to a British trawler being challenged by a French patrol boat which thought it was a Canadian ship as it was flying the Canadian flag. The French backed down when they realised the ship was British and no further action was taken. Canada later released the Spanish crew and shortly afterwards they released the trawler itself after the ship’s owners paid a $500,000 fine. However, Canada would not enter into any negotiations until all foreign fishing vessels left the disputed area on the edge of the EEZ. Spain steadfastly refused this and sent trawlers back there, this time with a Spanish navy Serviola-class patrol boat to protect them. Spain also began to prepare a more serious task force consisting of frigates and tankers to head to the area. In late March talks between the two nations broke down and Canadian vessels began cutting the nets of Spanish trawlers. The situation began to escalate when Spain sent another patrol boat to the area and Canada increased the number of naval vessels and air patrols across the edge of their EEZ. It was also reported that the Canadian Prime Minister had authorized his navy to fire at any armed Spanish Navy ships sailed in or around Canada’s EEZ. Realizing that there was a very real possibility of actual combat breaking out over the dispute the EU put pressure on Spain to agree to a deal and an agreement was reached. Under this agreement Spain was forced to leave the disputed zone and Canada’s right to eject foreign fishing vessels from the area using military force was accepted. Under the deal Canada’s own Greenland turbot quota was reduced, and they refunded the $500,000 fine to the owners of the Spanish trawler. The incident was over but it was remarkable how close two nations which were both NATO members and had previously been close allies had came to armed conflict over the issue of fishing grounds. The international community was also taken by surprise over Canada’s aggression and how proactive they had been in using armed vessels to protect their fisheries. Icelandic cod wars weren't simple either. I'm sure most countries would be pissed seeing vessels fishing off your coast. So close you can spot the ships from land with your naked eyes. And your point of overfishing happened then too. It may be exaggirated, but some say the only reason European (especially British) ships were fishing so close is because most other waters had a very small population due to overfishing. Iceland has always monitored their populations well and given quotas based on scientific studies to maintain a healthy population. The British weren't about to give in though, and simpþe pressure of leaving NATO wasm't everything. Icelandic coast guard and fishing vessels equipped with net cutters harassed British fishing vessels so much that tensions rose toa point of British officers surely considering sinking Icelandic coast guard ships (I don't have a source on thi, but tensions certainly were high). The increasing cost of fishing, having to escort each vessel and prevent Icelandic vessels from cutting their nets played it's part as well. I'm fairly surprised then that Iceland sided with Spain in this issue, as just 20 uears prior had been the defender in a similar struggle.
