In this drum lesson I've mentioned a very important thing for Double Bass drummers. The most common mistake! I have recorded tens of drummers in my studio and analysed the hundreds of drummers. And came up with this conclusion. 80% of double bass players have this mistake.. because it's a human being urge.. I don't want to give a spoiler of tis mistake here because there are a lot of tests inside the video. I recommend all of you to keep watching until the end.

Mistake was so obvious for me even on round 1, as it is my problem now. After 32 years of playing single pedal, it needs too much practice to get used to double pedals, also playing even, keeping the bpm and with correct groove.

Dear Mr. Arslan, 1) I found out the mistake in the last round.. 2) I learnt a lot from your teaching in this series since the end of 2019! Over the past year, I have been focusing on improving my double bass drumming with the guidance of this series and a book. I worried about your health since you stopped uploading new videos into this series in early 2020. Glad to see you are continuing the work. As a scientist&drummer, I like your rigor and knowledge!! I really appreciate your work. Wishing you the best in 2021. - Yao

Very happy to know this:) And I am really thankful for you concern. Everything is okey, I've just had to focus some other things when I gave break but I've returned now and want to make much more videos. I wish you a great year with health, music and good times with your beloved ones. Btw I really wonder which book you are using for guidance🙂

@@ErceArslan Hi Erce, I have been using the written by Bobby Rondinelli and Michael Lauren. I also played through the with my feet, which did not work well for me. These (two books and your video) are the three serious trials for practicing double bass. Thanks again for sharing your experience and knowledge!! Let's keep drumming!

I found this video quite informative, i heard the oddity somewhat in the middle of the first listen. But its still interesting that looking back to my own playing for some reason it doesn't catch an eye so fast when its my own recording, at least to my ears. Definitely need to watch more of your videos in detail from now on there's lot to learn every day :D

Actually on the first round. Honestly. That might be due to some different facts. 1. I have nearfield monitors (fluid audio f4) at my desktop, they're pretty honest. 2. I already trained my awareness to what I call "popcorn" when trying to identify healtoe-drummers in extreme metal - you can find it out in many cases because mastering doubles to machine-like precision is difficult as f*** and it seems hardly anyone truly got it. Nevertheless, it's extremely interesting anyways, because yes, when changing to higher frequencies it becomes more obvious. That teaches me a lot, mainly a) using samples with a big part of high frequencies is better for practicing to become tighter and b) when playing live it's maybe a good idea to use a non-aggressive (lower) kick sample unless you are 100% sure you can do it precisely. Right? Thanks a lot for this demonstration!

Awesome work! I have learned almost everything I know about double bass drumming from this series, thank you! On round one I thought that the second take was better and I guessed the mistake correctly. On the second round I was like 80% sure and when I still heard that same thing on the third round I was 100% sure.

Glad to hear that:) You are welcome. By the way if you understand something wrong on Round 1 that's enough.. don't need to know the exact problem if you are not experienced with recordings so much.. you have trained ears very well. Good job:D

@@ErceArslan Thanks for the tip. It is a great exercise, I usually do it after I've warmed up. And sometimes I change it up a little and play the first two eight notes of a triplet with my left foot. That seems to be helping with the doubles too.

I didn't feel that in take 4 the double time snares covered up the mistake. For some reason the contrast between the snare and the kick makes it more obvious to feel that "swingy" pulse of the timing mistake. But after going through some examples already I might looking for the mistake too much ;d Happy new year!

WARNING... long comment !!! I noticed something strange in round 1, but I couldn't identify it exactly as a timing problem. To my ear it sounded like groups of 4 16th with a tiny rest between each group instead of a straight and continous series of 16th, if that makes sense to you, and I thought it wasn't exactly a mistake if that's what the drummer wants to do. In round 2, it was clearer that it wasn't an intentional pattern, and with round 3 it was pretty obvious it was a mistake. When you asked why we sometimes don't realize these mistakes unless the are so obvious, my first thought was "bass guitar". Distorted guitars and other instruments as well, of course, but for me bass guitar is key since it shares the low frequencies with bass drums and it can mask the lack of precision, since, in addition, a bass guitar note can have a longer sustain than a bass drum note. This effect happens not only in fast and distorted metal music, but others as well. So, maybe other instruments are "our enemies" concerning our practice time and precission training, but bassists are our best allies on a stage... 😋 And this far in my long comment, I don't remember if you mentioned it, but there's another reason why our brain tricks us... because it likes logic and order. Since we're all in the music context, and we all know that it is supposed to be a 16th double bass pattern, our brain interprets it like this unless the mistake is so obvious it can't be ignored. If an alien or a cave man, who knows nothing about metal music, rock, or any other modern music style, listened to it, he'd probably notice the difference at first glance (even if that didn't mean anything to him). It happens the same with vision: our eyes don't really perceive 100% of what we see, but our brain fills the gaps in a logic way to give it a sense, and the same with language: if we could only interpret what other people say to us in a literal way, most of it wouldn't make no sense. With sound and music (that at the end of the day is another language), it's the same. And finally, to end such a long and tedious comment, of course it is important to practice, use the metronome and play with precission, but don't get obsessed with it. As you said, we're all humans, not machines. This kind of not so obvious mistakes are easily fixable in a studio and mostly unnoticeable on stage, and after all, if it ain't fun, playing music worths no shit. PS: Erce, I've been following all this series of videos and I can't have but good words about them, and this one ain't a exception. The clarity of your explanations and technique demonstrations makes them very useful. I've been playing for roughly 27 years and yet these still help me to improve one of my weakest points, the double bass playing (still working on it), so thanks for taking the time and work of doing it. I don't know why I never subscribed before, maybe I'm just a lazy ass, but today this mistake is fixed.... 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
