My dad competed D3 400m and xc races and he always said hed show up to meets with guys who were faster than him in practice and hed beat them on race day becuase they worked out the day prior and he took two days off and was fresh. Wish more coaches were like this.

When I was in high school, my coach (who specialized in shot put) made me run 3 miles as fast as I can even though I ran the 200 and 400m. I was so confused because I thought I was a sprinter. I eventually got a sprint coach and began sprinting. From my 10th grade year to 12th grade, I went from 54 to 48.75 in the 400m.

Went to high school in Louisiana, and the track coach was an assistant football coach. His way of doing things was everyone had to grind. 100m sprinters and two milers did the same workout. I dropped three full seconds over one summer once a sprint coach trained me for the 400m.

I’ve been training my youth athletes (7-8th grade) the longest and they are on the cusp of being faster and more agile than the hs (10-11th) athletes I’ve just started training. The main difference, we train speed and power output movements with LOTS of rest. I’m totally sold on less is better and building performance is key.

When I first started coaching I made my distance guys run 4 x 8 x 200. I would NEVER do anything like this now.

We all did crazy things.

I think that we are just stuck in the old school strength and conditioning mindset. Lifting heavy weights slowly does not coorelate at all with increased performance in that atheltes sport. In fact, lifting heavy and slow makes kids slower. Sport specific explosive weight training is key, second only to sprinting and explosive change in direction training.

“…I just block them…” when they can’t put forth a legit criticism… I think this is what he meant.

Wassup Cody Hope you doing well I got a question. What is a cue you recommend for striking/ punch the ground. I have a habit of letting my lower leg swing in front of my knee before I strike instead of striking as soon as the lower leg becomes perpendicular with the ground I am trying to fix it what cue would you recommend?
