I really like your videos good stuff, that solder sucker you use is pretty good compare to other I used expensive or cheap. Its a must have for doing this type of work. I also have a hakko 808 monster solder sucker, but I only use it when I have a lot of tiny leded unsoldering to do. Well keep up the good work always enjoying your video God bless.

Just an observation / constructive criticism..... You should have a damp sponge to wipe your soldering tip on. It cleans it and gives a much better joint. Heat transfer is the name of the game so when you said that you heated the lead more than the pad. That is the wrong method. Always heat both at once with emphasis on the pad. Like you said, minimum time heating the pad but both should be heated at the same time and solder will flow much better. Better over all heat transfer. If you have good heat transfer, the solder will flow more readily and the time spent heating will be far less than what you described. The capacitors are blowing because of heat build up and just being a cheap part. For those power units, the problem is that they over crowd the parts so you couldn't get a higher voltage cap and still have enough space. In the future where you have the space and what-not, always try to double-up on the operating voltage. I would try to see if I could use a 25 volt cap in the place as those were. Those capacitors do not "kick off" or start the supply. They are filter capacitors and filter any ripple in the output voltage. Some call it smoothing the output voltage. Some call them smoothing caps. Generally, in the US, we call them filter caps. If they aren't doing their job properly, the voltage may be a bit higher or lower than expected and the supply will sense a fault and shut down. The only things you could to to prevent the same fault in the future is 1: use better quality parts or 2: use a cooling fan to keep them cooler. Using used parts is bad practice. Resistors are one thing but caps are another and should be new and unused. What happens is the electrolyte inside the cap heats up causing pressure. When the pressure becomes too high, they vent, usually through the top. Caps, since the early 1980's have had the scored top and vent through that area. Before, they just blew the rubber plug out the bottom or completely blew the aluminum can off of the rubber plug, while shredding the plates within, causing further damage or a huge mess that must be completely cleaned or the electrolyte would splatter everywhere and corrode whatever it touched. All-in, this video was very well presented. Great job!

I have a new Vizio LED Flat Panel TV that had the power cord cut while it was still plugged into power. The cable was repaired but there is no power to the TV. Do these TV's have fuse protection inside? When the cut happened it was enough to cause my breaker to trip for the outlet that it was plugged into.

This may be a dumb question, but I was wondering when soldering in a capacitor, heat sink, etc. on a circuit board as you did in this video. Does it matter what type of solder you use? Such as solid core, resin core, acid core?

You should measure the ESR of the capacitors. It should be low as possible for a SMPS. Given that new capacitors are cheap and that they degrade over time (ESR) you should not use second hand ones. Also, resistors do not go short, and to describe a capacitor as a voltage filter is incorrect.

You are absolutely incorrect. Those capacitors ARE the filter caps, which filter the output voltage ripple, or ripple voltage, as some call it. The proper term is "filter capacitor"

Hi! I was listening to music through my Samsung Smart TV LN528550K1F (maybe a little loud?) and heard a loud POP and the tv turning off. I get no standby light now and it, obviously, won't turn on either. It seems like it would be a capacitor and I would have bet money I would have found one when I took the back off my tv...but they all look normal. In fact, nothing looks abnormal - burnt, bulging, disconnected - anything. Can a capacitor have "blown" and made that noise and still look normal?

Hello I have the Benq XL2730Z. Once I moved my desk to clean the dust and heard an electrical noise. When touching things the screen such as the cables I hear the noise. Sometimes it does not start, and sometimes I see the orange blinking. If I move the cable around for a bit left and right I can start it and it works. Do you think it could be the power cable?

There are capacitors that go bad on the power supply board and need to be changed.... There are specific youtube videos about this so look them up. most I have seen are very well done. Only use new parts and try to get better quality than what came in it originally. Japan is normally good about using quality components so I'm surprized to hear this.

ok.. and what If my monitor powers on randomly, but ONLY by plugging it in and out of the wall... so there's obviously no standby voltage.. there are 3 lines coming from my psb.. a 12V , a 5V and a 3.3V.. if I plug it in -and it isnt turning on- 3volts appear on the line for a sec then falls down to 1-2.5V , and if I press the power on button in that instance, the power led lights up for a sec.. If I measure my 3V line after a failed plugin, it measures from 1 to 2,5Volt totally caoticly jumping between.. If it does turn on by plugging it in in a lucky way, it has steady voltage on all 3 lines.. so wtf :D btw replaced all the psb capacitors as a first try.. now im totally clueless.. (btw im a car mechanic :D ) nothing physicly wrong with any boards.. this not willing to turn on thing developed through a few years of time

First unplug tv powercord and cables for 2 minutes to reset, next Check standby volts ok then can be bad main logic board ICs or caps. Get at shopjimmy.com or ebay for main board, let me know if that fixed it. Part number is on sticker.

While testing the power board I found the pins on CN201 for 5.1V read 5.2V. The pins on CN202 for 5.1V read 5.2V and the pins for 12V read 0.0V. I figure purchasing a new board or boards should complete the repair, but I really want to test components and maybe replace what's bad. That would really be satisfying to me. I really appreciate your help and guidance.
