Hello, Ms. Jennifer Marie, I just want to ask a question about #8 Quotation marks. * The actual saying she read was "Time heals all wounds." Why there isn't a comma after the word "was"? And also, the next example doesn't have a comma after the word "them" * She called them "boring, rude, and cruel." and she stormed out of the room. Is that also a part of comma rules? Thanks.

Thanks for this! As a native speaker and a new transcriber with Rev, one of the things I am trying to get used to is sentence structure and how they keep correcting me about NOT starting a sentence with a conjunction. I am 48 years old and when I went to school starting sentences with "and", "or" or "because" (in certain situations) was a huge 'No"! Unfortunately this has now become acceptable which makes so little sense to me that I don't even know how to do it! Starting sentences off with an "and" makes no sense to me unless there's an ellipses before it....which would mean that it's not technically a new sentence. Otherwise, sentences starting with an "and" sound like someone just walked in while a conversation was already in progress or as if the person speaking has a multiple personality disorder and is interrupting themselves! Frankly, I'm starting to think that society has become so lazy and so encased in this no-judgement mentality that we're now starting to allow common mistakes to become legitimate. What's next? Will we soon shrug and say - "Ok, from now on "your" and you're" will now be interchangeable?" Geez... No wonder non-native English speakers are confused... I'm confused! LOL! Ok sorry for the vent but I just discovered this and am trying to figure out why this has become a "thing".

Absolutely and you've made some excellent points!!! I think the issue is that when people speak conversationally, they end up speaking without stopping. So, if we don't begin a sentence with a conjunction like "and", then the sentences will be run-on and never have an ending. For transcription purposes, rules have to be bent since people don't speak the way they should write formally. :P

Hello, Jennifer. In the example you've given: The actual saying she read was "Time heals all wounds." Is it alright if we put a comma between the word "was" and the quotation mark? Or is a comma only needed before a quotation mark if the sentence is being said by a person (Ex. She replied, "Yes.")? If it is, may I ask why was there no comma before the start of the quotation mark for the sentence you provided: She called them "boring, rude, and cruel..." Thank you.

Thank You Jennifer. I really have enjoyed brushing up on this. I'm with Rev, and don't want to screw up any more. My metrics could be better and i'm so lucky to have gotten on before this pandemic hit the country. After completing sixty minutes, I got another chance with 90 minutes. If i blow this i'm out. And i'm sure i'll be easily replaced. Should i have capitalized all the eyes in "i'm." Am i screwing the pooch again? I'm spelling "Eyes," to represent the letter "i" because, "i is" doesn't make sense. and there is no such thing as i's.

Example: I love you. But it's time to move on. Or I love you, but it's time to move on. Another example: There were many killed in battle field. And the officers were retrieving their IDs. Also, Jennifer just one more thing. Is there speech software that will work inside Revs Dash? Or any kind of software that'll help me with captioning transcription? To assist me in typing faster.? Ok, I forgot if the period after the punctuation or before it. I'm not trying to have all the transcription done for me. But, I could use some assistance till i get speedy. I[m so nervous and i just want to get it right so i can continue to work from home. I have Sixty minutes left. I got brave and captioned a whole 28 minutes. Didn't get a good metric score. Now i'm just frozen in limbo. Scared to move forward until i'm certain i'm not going to blow these last remaining minutes. Excellent! Very well done :) Just a couple things: For number 3. Make sure to start the sentence with a capital: "Let's go to the park...." For number 8. The answer is "How are you making soup? I don't know how." - We flip "you are" with questions. Also, you don't need a hyphen between "know-how". Other than that, PERFECT! :)
